I watched the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony, this morning, and thrilled at the pomp, the circumstance, the gorgeous tinged with melancholy performance. Empty seats, apocalyptic overtones but gorgeous because of more than in spite of.
As much frustration as there is in Japan, over hosting an international spectacle in the teeth of pandemic, the proud island nation owned the moment and none other could do it better so here we are. Surfing’s grand Olympic debut set against a rich backdrop it may not even deserve.
There is much interest in our Sport of Kings and Jeff Bezos organ, The Washington Post, is here to explain the nuances, the li’l bits. In an interactive feature titled S U R F I N G, the Post uses Florida’s Caroline Marks as proxy. Shall we read one nib?
It’s big enough for her to barrel – riding through a cascading tunnel of water – but also easy to navigate, allowing Marks to build speed and use the wave lip like a ramp, launching her and her board into the air for twirling tricks. The mere idea of this mythical wave makes her smile.
I’ve made it part of my life’s work to make the world “barrel” a verb, as it relates to surfing, and you don’t know how proud I am at this moment.
This isn’t about me, though, it’s about all of us and we should, each and every one, keep scrap books of our favorite grand Olympic debut moments.
Let’s barrel.

Using top quality handcrafted equipment such as this one of 5’11” in length with a round tail (which has become very popular in recent times) will help a wave rider to barrel often every day the sea has optimal conditions, and sometimes on numerous times per ride if the cascading water tunnels allow…

Niiiiice, I would’ve sanded it, and looks like the nose shape taken from my Bali boards from about 8 yrs ago.
I’ve been trying to buy some back (heck I’ve been forgetting to look at trademe haha, just been on FB marketplace lately, DOH haha) and have a couple of dozen in various conditions, your one looks virtually mint.

If I were you I’d keep it, it’ll go like a rocket in anything fast and/or hollow, and feel firmly neutral in all conditions.
I’ve only been buying some back when I see them on FB so they don’t end up getting trashed by guys who don’t understand what they have.

The immortal board that Rusty made for Occy comes to mind ….
For the unbelievable groundbreaking power surfing that Occy did on it at Warp Speed , for ever changing the limits of the possible backside ,but more importantly the forehand re entry from a move that was straight up and down, to something that involved carving and breaking the fins out through the lip with gay abandon …. not once but multiple cracks down the line on every wave .
And also because the board was indestructible , the myth says that he would check it it to flights , sans board bag, and it would emerge immaculate at the other end without the slightest stress fracture ….and was still being ridden with great success , by various mate’s of Occ’s ,( Beaver put on a great show ) a few years later ……like a magic carpet .

Surfing really is turning into the media darling of the games, totally understandable. On the other hand I’m surprised by the lack of skateboarding hype, is it getting much coverage in the states?
Off topic but can we get Chris Cote to teach Gary Rogers about surfing? I’d be epic to have his piss-taking, urban vibes on the WSL. I’ll never happen though as he’d fail the possitivity test.
The US Olympic skaters don’t have the look that goes over too well in Kansas or wherever. Tattoos etc. If Sky Brown was on the team then yes.
