Woke-alism.
The Hawaiian islands are receiving a pre/post pandemic surge in tourism that is creating many problems. As fully vaccinated visitors were encouraged to skip quarantine, restaurants are reporting 90 minute wait times for tables, drivers telling of rental car-choked streets, hospitality workers of an inability to keep up.
Mayor Mike Victorino, from Maui, is begging airlines to cut back on flights to allow for some recovery.
“We’re asking for just a pause, if you want to use that term,” he told EuroNews, “We don’t have the authority to say ‘stop,’ but we’re asking the powers that be to help us in this sense. For more than a year, COVID-19 stopped everybody from going almost everywhere. And so now Maui has become – and the state of Hawai’i – a focus point for that pent-up demand. We’d like to welcome them, but we also realise that we only have so many beaches.”
Other woke locals, or “woke-als,” have gone further, turning to Instagram and posting shame-inducing messages.
-The displacement of Hawaiians for tourism development.
-Gentrification etc.
-Cultural genocide through colonized narratives redefining aloha, language at large, hula, and cultural mores and practices.
-Perpetuation of a “terminal narrative,” erasing the ongoing struggles by Hawaiians against colonialism and imposed capitalism.
-The perpetuation of harmful tropes like hyper-sexualized hula girls or doormat natives.
Etc.
To be fair there is a bit more to “the problem” with Eddie than him being straight forward. I have a hard time seeing past the drug trade and extortion that gave him his place here just because he has worked hard to keep developers out and let local boys in to the comps.I know he has done much more then that on both sides of that coin but you get my point. He is of a time passed where power is muscle and status comes from putting that muscle to work. There are times when I miss things about those days but I can’t respect him or the rest like him. All be it that he is quite likable.
Thank you. I was hoping that by calling him a haole you all would see where I was going with that. Here in Hawai’i we like to let as many wrongs as possible into the equation if the guy knows how to fight and then cover those wrongs up with one right we can all stand behind so the guy won’t fight us.
Still fistfights breaking out over dining in Lahaina? Feels like there is some weird aggro energy in the air with people traveling lately. And tourism is truly the double-edged sword for local people- too many jobs based on it. And no easy solutions. All I know is that when the lockdown was in full effect, a lot of my friends weren’t complaining about the less busy line-ups- although I heard some were choked up cuz all the school kids were out.

Lucky for country they get a haole that wants to keep it the way it is. Eddy has worked hard to let country stay country. Most don’t understand that.
The same people complaining are also renting their car on turo and offering their homes on airbnb. All these haoles are just freaking out after having 18 months of no tourism and getting all their friends to move over so they can work remote and have mai tai’s at sunset together but now there are other people posting up at their favorite sunset zone. Us locals are in the same boat as pre covid. We are happy to share our aina and be able to make a living wage due to tourism. But no act dumb or cracks goin come.
That’s a pretty slippery slope. The whites have been there for generations as well and many longer than the Filipinos and Japanese but they don’t get “local” status. Granted, they weren’t brought over as “slave labor” but still, where do you draw the line?
You’re on the right track, but it lacked self righteousness and had a touch too much self awareness.
The place is over-rated anyway. Couple good waves, rest are mediocre.
Hasn’t this always been an issue in the islands? People don’t understand that there livelihood relies on those tourist dollars. You have to work directly in the tourist industry for it to control your income. Not much in the islands isn’t based on tourism dollars. The dream location turns to a nightmare when it tips that scale of numbers to the wrong side. Any yes, the tourists are fucked and have absolutely no understanding of the culture or people, not that there’s much of that left.
Are you really lumping Filipinos and Japanese in with Hawaiians and labeling them local? That’s a stretch. Although Chas stretches everything beyond its breaking point so you might have something in a relative sense.

For some reference/FYI: The Duke and Buffalo Keaulana are Actually pure Hawaiians. Both married “haoles”- Whites for this. Dane Kealoha probably closeest to above in Hawaiian blood, wife definitely didn’t look Hawaiian. List continues of well known “kanak’s” married to the dreaded, no good, all your fault haoles. Michael Ho, Zeke da Hawaiian lau’s chick looked quite Caucasian. Queen of Makaha Rell Sun married a very well known haole surfer. Kelia moniz married haole, da regulator from Kauai K. Garcia married his beloved daughter to a haole Florence brother. MANY more, but just a sample of the hypocrisy of Part Hawaiians today. South Pacific Islanders call them “fake Polynesians”-Talk of keeping da culture, etc, yet can’t WAIT to marry a non kanak(a). I’d Put $$ most listed do not speak fluent Hawaiian either- the culture/bloodline they love and Must protect. Try this if you want what’s left of your culture to truly carry on:
MARRY another Hawaiian. Learn to SPEAK Hawaiian and use it. No excuse “my great grandmother was banned from speaking it, so we don’t. That’s weak and pathetic excuse today. If you hate haoles so much, prove it, stop eating haole food and drinking haole beer and haole sports/entertainment.

Good luck with that brahda. You can and I believe need to perpetuate the Kanaka culture but there is no longer a pure blood line to protect.
