My local government says that I must police the people that enter my business or I will be prosecuted. I’m in Hawai’i. The police have come to my business to instruct us that we no longer have the freedom to choose what customers are allowed. They must meet state health guidelines. Public schools are not allowing un-vax student to attend. I’m not speaking of covid vax. The 7 – 9 immunization vaccines that every student must have. Not may have. Must have. If you agree or disagree on if that is a good idea or not is not the point. I do not have the freedom to choose what is best for my families health. And living in Hawai’i also means you may not travel with out your safe travels papers proving you are clean. Our local government is quite progressive and chooses to follow in the footsteps of New York and California on most government overreach.

For the record I am 100% opposed to gov’t making my or anyone’s healthcare decisions. With that said the gov’t is well within their right to say that if you want to attend a public school then you must be vaxxed. This has been upheld by the Supreme Court and found constitutional. I do not trust the mega pharma government complex that is making billions off of their vax that does not stop transmission of the virus but continues to allow it to spread and become stronger. The opposite of the way virus transmission through natural immunity works where the virus continues to weaken as it spreads to try to stay alive. Here in Hawai’i many of us rely on inter island travel as well as going to the continent for business, family, and health care. Resident or visitor you need medical papers. A quick trip can cost me 10 days quarantine due to the testing window and Hawai’i not excepting most rapid test. Yet 1000’s of tourist fly into our island hourly without having to test being that they have the vax that as you said does not stop them from being infected. If this is such a dangerous virus then that just does not make any sense.

Your assumption is that all viruses work the same way and that is simply not true. Mutations do no always equal a weaker virus. On top of that, not all vaccines are meant to stop transmission. Fact is, while this vax does not stop transmission, it reduces it. And when you continually reduce the chance of something spreading, you can eventually put the fire out so to speak. The virus spread here because people could not be bothered to put on a mask. The virus spread because people were packed into bars/restaurants etc… So we were not able to head it off, it mutated and will continue to do so. It’s a wreck here in FL. Yes! Why are they not testing? I am all for testing. But recall for some reason, a lot of people were against it. There are rapid tests – in fact I just did one yesterday evening (kids brought home a cold). I traveled to Cen Am, even though vaxxed I was tested before allowed back. It does not make sense that we are not testing travelers. We should, esp if coming from my state.
A mask is not perfect, but go cough in a mirror with/without one. It helps some especially in enclosed spaces with limiting aerosols. I agree it does have limited impact on incoming particles as they can come in through the top or sides, but it helps some, especially if tighter fitting. The biggest impact is the other way, from me to you. If I am infected, less viral load can get through my mask through my respiratory droplets. Cloth not the best but certainly helpful, N95 the best. I understand the argument about the size of the virus that people have used, but it does not work that way. Much in the way a raindrop forms (water vapor MUST have something on which to condense), the virus has to attach to droplets that are bigger than the holes in the mask. I have traveled to New England, Texas, and Central America. I took my kids to Disney three separate days (masks required then, they are required there once again). So far I am in the middle of covid land and have been negative. I got back from Cen Am and it was going through my neighborhood. Couple friends got it, one was okay, the other has mucked up lungs but improving – his friend who is healthy 50 yo ended up in hospital. They both lost significant amounts of weight. My kids are school and it’s running crazy there too, so I could end up with Covid any moment, as could my kids. So I wear a mask in all enclosed spaces, not to protect me, but to protect others. I am mostly outdoors though fishing, surfing or whatever – I just try to get outside. Although that might kill you right now with this heat.
We will have or had covid at some point. Same as the flu. I just want the freedom choose the best for me and my family. As you are doing for yours. God bless.

Timmy is stating very clearly that our government is tyrannical, and by saying he is wide awake he is implying that we are blindly following along. I object to both assertions. He then goes on to use an analogy likening the situation to Nazi Germany, which is way off piste. I can’t speak for Australia but there are no ‘covid camps’ in Aotearoa and the vaccination is encouraged, but by no means mandatory like Timmy again clearly states.
The lockdowns here are just like any other regulation that keep the population safe – like speed limits, no murdering laws, no tax evasion, no hate speech etc. We follow these rules because they are created by a democratically elected government, there are solid legislative processes in place and we have one of the least corrupt governments in the world. Most of us believe that they are in the best interests of the entire population.
Having an American ex pro-surfer wax lyrical about our country and circumstances he knows very little about is gonna cop a heated response.
To recap on the situation in NZ, vaccines aren’t mandatory, the government pays us to stay home during lockdowns, we’ve enjoyed full freedom of movement in NZ (no masks, no restrictions, no covid) apart from one short nationwide lockdown and now a second. I also agree that he has us in his best interests, but from where I’m standing he’s barking up the wrong tree. Aloha First Time Caller. I think we all need to remember that any freedom we hand over to the government will not freely come back to us. History has taught us such. Just because the freedoms that you have lost are not a huge inconvenience to you today doesn’t mean that someone else in a much different circumstance is not being oppressed by the same restriction of freedom. Fare to say that my views are different than yours and I can respect that. Timmy may have been out of line posting something on a social media outlet. I would assume that Tim like myself have many friends all over the world that are sharing their hardship during this time. It is heart breaking to hear friends loose their livelihood due to government control. I know it’s happening here in Hawai’i, New Zealand, and everywhere else. I see it like this- if you are in lockdown you are oppressed. If you are forced to get a medical procedure you are oppressed. If you are unable to work to pay for your expenses so the government has to you are oppressed. These are all small steps toward us choosing slavery. I tell my kids prisoners in the US get paid to stay in their government provided home also, and with 3 meals daily. But they are not free. I hope you, your family, and friends are health happy and free.

I don’t see lockdown as oppression, I see it as a regulatory technique that protects the population in just the same way that we aren’t allowed the freedom to go around killing people because we want. We aren’t locked up in the way it is implied. I went up the road to go skating with my son on the footpath just before. I can go out and about in my neighbourhood as I please. I can talk to my friends but from 2m distance. I can go shopping, go to the beach etc. We are allowed these liberties, we just can’t mix and mingle like the good old days until the virus is gone. It’s not ideal and yes some people are losing their livelihoods as part of the many facets of this pandemic, but that is a rarity in NZ. And the flip side is that in NZ many people have been spared the heartache of losing their loved ones due to Covid because of the way we have dealt with it, and because we are blessed with being an island. More people die each year due to avoidable health issues like diabetes and heart issues caused by diet than covid so I worry the news hype is more about power and money than it is about health and humanity.
