Omertà life.
The unstated codes, silent rules, of extreme sports including skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing are what makes our games so very beautiful. Don’t photo the spot, don’t say where you are going, never feature an un-stuck air on cover of increasingly rare printed magazines.
The Surfer’s Journal, maybe the purest paper and ink out there, just violated the third, featuring a gorgeous shot of Nathan Fletcher soaring so high, out the back, into splashdown on its latest wrapping and camps quickly pitched.
“An iconic moment.”
“No no.”
I love the omertà but am also undecided-adjacent here, though not really.

My wife, Circe Wallace, anyhow, graciously swung into the weekly recording of The Grit! podcast to provide proper insight on the matter at hand. She, an ex-professional snowboarder, has represented some of the best extreme athletes of our generation and has a far more valuable opinion.

Maybe it’s cause I’m 40, or cause all I did was consume surf media as a teen, but I’m still surprised when podcast guys like David and Chas aren’t across basic surf facts like the “no make” thing. No mention of the throwaways across all 80’s and 90’s covers?
Was it wrong? Probably.
Is DLS a mid-level VAL when talking deep surf? Probably.
Yeah were fighting offshore windmills. It’s a stupid idea that will be a death blow to nearshore fishing and severely impact recreation. Keeping machines running on the water is difficult and expensive. Build them on land.
Only a matter of time before a tanker runs into one and creates a spill.
When you think about the beauty of the 2300ish windmills in Palm Srpings, imagine the beauty of that many or more offshore! BTW- Can you imagine the enviromental impact of a windmill spill!

The Potz airs back in day, I never trusted mags after that, it was like learning Santa wasn’t real..
People’s opinions on this are far too black and white to be useful or even not pompous. In my opinion (doesn’t mean much) there’s middle ground with “no makes”. If this particular photo wasn’t a massive fly away off a solid Pipe end bowl including it on the cover of SJ would be ridiculously wrong. The fact that it is such a big air and such a solid wave during an earlier era of aerial surfing makes it very much worth a cover. Again, my opinion, but to immediately write it off without considering tertiary factors seems lazy and disingenuous.
It’s a sick shot, and you know he’s having a helluva good time. Fucken love it 🤘🏼

“Action Sports” really is an embarrassing term.
Nice joke Chasdzy, it’s hardly a secret that most photos printed in the old mags were a split second before a crash n burn.
But spectacular shots always sold t-shirts etc which paid for the advertising for those mags to exist.
