The respect is mutual, as you might imagine, with Chris Cote describing Chas Smith as the Tucker Carlson of surf media and BeachGrit as the sport’s own Fox News. A heady double compliment!

Here’s a question for Chris you avoided that your bro smoochy interview only perpetuates – Why is everything we see from the WSL so obviously contrived?
Is there a better metaphor for BG than those two paltry brackets groaning under the weight of that shelf. There’s better, but more expensive store bought options available, but those were there. A professional could engineer a much stronger and more elegant solution, but that would cost money and these two seem to work just fine.

Just watched Maestro, and Chas really owning his hate for surfing feels like a similar character arch. Love seeing him genuinely questioning and trying to understand Cote.
The NFL commentators are now regularly disagreeing with penalties or lack of penalties. Feeling ripped off by refs, judges, etc is a big part of being a fan. Isn’t it also a part of gambling addiction? The punishment reward cycle of it, that creates the addiction? I just saw a thing talking about how social media addiction is similar. People see a lot of stuff they don’t like on social media, but also get dopamine hits, and it’s that unpredictable tension between the punishment and reward that keeps them coming back. The WSL should probably embrace this some more in the booth. Look at their most passionate fan base, the Brazilians. Has any fan base in surfing perceived themselves as getting ripped off more? Jeeze, all the World Shame League comments after a Brazilian loss, death threats, etc. Questioning the judges is good for the sport, and the entertainment. I will say though, if your someone like Pete Mel, and your claiming you are 100 percent right and they are 100 percent wrong, that’s not necessarily questioning the judges decision as much as an attempt to show and flex status and authority over them. I think there’s a difference between that and disagreeing. Disagreement is a positive part of sport. I’ve seen plenty of NFL games where both teams fan bases feel like their team got ripped off by refs. That’s ok, it bonds you with the team. That’s wholeheartedly different than one commentator simply trying to elevate his own authority cuz he has a mic. Maybe it’s the difference between accusation and disagreement. The more inflammatory accusation should be left for pundits and talking heads like Chas to do in podcasts the week following the comp. Just like the NFL.
