It is, officially, award season in Hollywood. That wonderful time of year when actors and actresses, directors and producers dress in lavish black tie and fill ballrooms or auditoriums with their glamor. Plebes, at home on Hungry Man Salisbury steak-stained La-Z-Boys watch the proceedings on free-to-air television and dream.
Last night, you certainly know, was the Golden Globe awards. Host Jo Koy gave what was universally described as a “cringe-worthy” performance though it hardly dented the joy winners Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Sarah Snook (Succession) or Beef felt whilst hosting their participation trophies.
Now, the Golden Globes are certainly wonderful but the official award season kick-off occurs days before in Palm Springs, California which hosts the annual Palm Springs International Film Awards.
That affair was wonderfully luxe but also sprinkled with wave tank magic. The Palm Springs Surf Club, which opened January 1st, has been top of mind for those traveling to the desert and dominated the proceedings.
Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won “best song” there for their Barbie hit “What was I made for?” Film icon Meryl Streep, handing them the gilded miniature Liberace piano, had other thoughts to share, though, declaring “You have delivered the Barbie love bomb. You saved the movies last summer, all of our jobs. You’ve delivered joy to countless generations and genders of people,” she began before pivoting, “And you should surf that wave, kids – until you’re old and deserve to be jaded like me.”
Billie Eilish and Finneas certainly should surf that wave, we all should, but what setting do you imagine they’d select? A slabbing barrel to air or something a little more user friendly? Whatever they chose, I don’t think it can go wrong. They can listen to inventor Tom Lochtefeld share and make an informed pick.

Yours truly was out there this weekend. Paid for advanced slab sessions. Pumps were down and they could only run the intermediate wave, which was still fun, but I haven’t been refunded the $50 extra per session I paid.

It’s my 40th this year and I’m planning a trip to mark it. Options are:
– stock standard indo boat or land camp
– family holiday to the US with Mex trip thrown in
– wave pool tour of the US with Vegas blow out at the end.
What wave would Meryl suggest I surf?
Options two and three could easily be combined, if the family enjoys being in the shittiest parts of the US

Depends on if you have been to Indo (which I’m assuming you have). If you’ve hven’t been there already go now. Wavepools are over rated, especially for a full on family trip, and Lemoore is about the worst place you could visit in the US. Palm Springs not bad to visit but that pool looks lame and if its summer you don’t want to be there (never been to Vegas and likely never will but that’s just me). Mex is Mex, could be good or you could end up dead. That takes it right back to Indo. Try the Telos if looking for a different vibe, waves aren’t as good as the Ments but crowd reflects that. Last choice would be to fuck all those choices off and take the fam to the Maldives if you have the ching, Meryl would like that choice.
This may just be my sarcasm detector needing some recalibration, but you aren’t really considering coming to the mainland USA instead of going to Indo, right??

Lhok Nga is pretty insane in terms of waves but can’t handle the in season wind at all. Iinsane setups in front of the golf course and Cemara goes off when it gets big. Been there a couple times early in the season, around February, and its absolutely sick when there are waves but swell has a hard time getting in there during the shoulder seasons. Super nice up there compared to the rest of Indo, at least it was before the tsunami. Nice roads and they used to grow a bunch of weed up there.

Went to roller skating rink on my 40th. Had a blast! Loved watching surf buddies hold onto the wall afraid of bruising their buttocks. The two decade nerd surf shop employee, who always tries super hard to fit in but never did. Eddie ripped the place apart on a pair of 5 wheel inline speed skates. He finally realized his value and moved south to work for a big box retail distribution. He sure had hard time fitting in with to cool for school surf shop guys. God if he didn’t pull the hot older DMV lady renewing his drivers license.. “Eddie Would Milf”
Why the fuck everyone doesn’t surf holiday in the south of France is beyond me but the lack of Australians stinking up the joint sure is refreshing.
