“They [the surfers] were very brave.”
One of the major themes of this year, as the northern hemisphere nears spring, is surfers saving people from drowning. Sometimes just one person, exhausted from swimming lightly too far. Sometimes who families, caught out in a rip tide, or some such, and ready to join Davey Jones on the ocean floor.
Brave heroes, the lot of them, with the latest batch coming to us from Ireland and on St. Patrick’s Day. For it was there, off Garrestown Beach in County Cork, that a father, mother and their two teenage daughters became swept far and away, and not in a gorgeous Tom Cruise x Nicole Kidman sort of way.
Multiple people on the beach called the emergency services number in Ireland, 999, but calling for help only does so much. Dire times require men, and women, of action and thankfully two surfers rose out of the mist, like banshees of Insherin, and saved all souls.
“It had potential to be a big incident,” a coast guard spokesperson said. “They [the surfers] were very brave.”
No doubt.
But over to you, dear reader. I assume that you saved no lives on St. Patrick’s Day but might have spent it drinking down pints of green beer and pretending Monday was never going to come. Well, it did come and how do you feel now? Happy with your decision or regretting, terribly?

Chas, edit the bit where it says “no doubt” and make it “to be sure”
I like when surfers
Do something quite meaningful
Like not catching waves
Thank you Super Micro, wherever you are!
Off the beers for a week now.feels good, except for the insane dreams. The last one being a white, shaking something like a pit bull with a softoy. Hoping it wasn’t me in the future. Regret nothing!
will be sure to double my intake to make up for your abstinence. Godspeed.
Spent Paddy’s abroad, and ignored it! I’m to Paddy’s what Scrooge was to Christmas. I received a nice message from my sister yesterday morning wishing me a happy Saint Patrick’s day, I had to resist writing back “Fuck off!!” Surfed Garrett’s town once, a bit of a cunt of a spot!
Too humble, claim it brother
wore green, watched a bunch of little kids play soccer/football, my tiny kid scored three goals in honor of the clover (granted, the D was nonexistent and the goalie distracted by tiny flowers on the pitch), and squeezed in a couple of non Irish beers to cap the day. No lives saved. Welcome to paradise.
If you guys ever get in a rip swim parallel to shore until you’ve cleared the pull of the rip current. Swim with the waves, allowing them to push you to shore. Ok my work is done here. Off to work I go hungover and regretful.
We need more posts* like this on mainstream sites not named BG!
*Not about the swimming parallel but this man’s extreme bravery in going to work hungover and regretful. But what did Sean do that leaves him with regret?
letting Honey Ryder slip away
She was soooo hot!
Hard to pick just one, but she would be at top of list.
As I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw at my local a whole family that was drowning’
I first produced my mid-length
hand made by my shaper
And said “swim parallel or the rip will surely take you”
But what about Derek these on these Monday mornings. After a period of his absence it really makes me wonder what crook shit he got up to.
Xox
That’s probably for a site on tor
Mick might be Irish, but Eugene is definitely German
I did Nazi that coming.
Fuck getting a hangover when you’ve got a 2 year old squawking you awake every morning at 6am. Happy with my decision to not use contraception or regretting, terribly? Hmmmm
Don’t worry as sooner than you think that awesome kid will grow up, leave your house and tolerate your aged, poor surfing skills for a few hours while allowing you to buy him/her dinner after the session. That will be me on Friday night with my oldest and the hangover Sat morning won’t be as painful as there will be no screaming kids to echo through your head.
Suggestion: up your surfing game and tell your son he can treat Pop to dinner now and again. Win, win.
On it!
What about an entitled stepson who can’t leave home due to insane housing costs in Hawaii and not having the education to get anything better than service industry jobs.
And wants to rent a single family home with his girlfriend and her dog and two cats, (no roommates, because that wouldn’t be ideal), but can’t find anything like that for more than a fortune per month. And doesn’t want to go to college or any trade school.
So therefore cannot move out.
What then?
I say he gets the boot and let him and his mom stay all sour at me for not continuing to support him at far below market rent indefinitely.
Ok. Got that off my chest.
Give me his address and I’ll send him the nail bag and framing hammer I used to pay my way through college. I miss the trades !
The community college system in California is a great way to be able to transfer to the U.C system.
Don’t know if Hawaii has the same thing. Make him move out and live on his own and support himself. He’ll get sick of being broke and doing shitty jobs.
That’s what a rational person would do.
Unfortunately a mothers love of her son and desire to have him close forever knows no bounds. And now I get resentment from him for now finally collecting way below market rent from him to help with expenses. Minimal gratitude for all the years of free ride existence. A 22 year old teenager.
All that love and not making him start to choose a path in life is going to hurt him. Your twenties are a very important decade to begin a career that will allow you to have a good life . I’m sure you know all this.
I’ve realized now how each decade of your life sets you up for success in
The next decade.
