When, over the past two seasons have we approached a comp with a legitimately good forecast that pumped from beginning to end?
A fairly grim looking Bells Beach was on offer to continue this star-studded but apparently cursed surf circus. Grey drizzle, crumbling, wind-chopped half-waves.
Contestable, as the parlance goes.
“Classic after school, after work surf,” Vaughn Blakey called it. Australians do love a workmanlike attitude to surfing.
But when, over the past two, maybe three, seasons have we approached a comp with a legitimately good forecast that pumped from beginning to end?
And just for the record, I am not one of the many Bells Beach detractors. The weight of history alone should be enough to sustain this event. Beyond that, when Bells is good it highlights a traditional style of surfing that most fans still value, and about as close as they come to relating to the world’s elite.
It’s the only spot on Tour where scoring waves might be ridden prone for a few seconds. Expect whitewater takeoffs, big, foamy faces, slow half-turns down the line and big, meaty, converging sections.
And stairs, of course. We’ll hear about the stairs once or twice. But it’s all part of the Bells Beach fresco, and I, for one, take some pleasure in it.
Plus, there’s a kink for goofies at Bells that I enjoy, for kinks are what make life interesting. “Occy Bells Solo” is a pornhub category.
However, without sounding sacreligious, it is this writer’s opinion that the accolade for best goofyfoot surfing seen at Bells Beach belongs to Gabriel Medina. (See 2019 as a solid example.)
But it was regular-footer Morgan Ciblic who threw the kinkiest turn I saw this morning, spunking all his Challenger Series frustration into the end section of his first wave. It was a beautiful layback, violent yet finessed, like a fine orgasm.
That turn and more saw the Aussie wildcard delight the partisan commentary team and take victory in his heat, even if it was at the expense of Golden Child, Ethan Ewing.
Jordy Smith parlayed his El Savadorian high into cold, windy Bells, slashing, stabbing and thrusting his way to victory. George Pittar offered a little pushback, but defeat of Edgard Groggia was tantamount to necrophilia.
Italo Ferreira, who undoubtedly makes love with the vigour of a Jack Russell thrusting its nose at a holed rabbit, just out of reach, dropped an 8.50 on his opening wave.
Ferreira, though often frantic, has the tenacity to get the job done here. If anyone can mow through the field like Bonnie Blue on a heater, it’s him. Defeat of the finest swordsman on Tour in Ramzi Boukhaim is a good start.
Jackie Robinson, always the big spoon, exercised typical control over lesser conditions and opponents. Defeat of Ryan Callinan and Marco Mignot was half-cocked, and just another bend in the road to Fiji, where he will release his full load unto the world, and we will lie back, hearts and tongues lolling.
Filipe Toledo was spanked once again by Mexican bean machine Al Cleland. The question of dominance in this pairing is not a question at all.
Griffin Colapinto still can’t seem to reach full tumescence. Once again, he was forced to lie open-mouthed and empty-headed whilst Kanoa Igarashi bukkaked to victory.
Colapinto is no longer sharing personal affirmations from his diary, but if he can prise apart the pages, I think he should.
The round ended with intense scissoring between Cole Houshmand and Liam O’Brien. Neither man could be separated at the end, 10.33 points apiece.
In commentary news, Ronnie Blakey and Ritchie Lovett offered a sobriety unsuitable for mocking or derision. Ritchie has a clanger or two in his locker, so there is some hope.
Luckily Joe was back with his brand of inanity, and Felicity Palmateer was there to say WOW.
Kaipo reported from the line-up, mumbling vaguely numbly, and looking appropriately balloon-ish in a hood. A strong look for him, if you ask me.
You’ll need to exercise your tantric muscles for more, as I have to rush off to Edinburgh right now, to a press-screening of a surf film at Lost Shore, Edinburgh’s wavepool. The film is “Beyond the Island”, and it’s about big wave specialist Ben Larg.
I shall return with reflections, which will be filtered and delivered to you through the fog of a strong hangover.

A world of chance and your number comes up. Winning ones and losing ones. Ramzi was drilled bad and got nailed to the reef. An Easter story indeed. Surf style. Could have been worse he’s still breathing thank goodness. No rolling back the stone required.
DR to JP: ” It needs to be sexier, like a lot sexier, here look at this stack of Penthouse that I always keep handy.”
Couldn’t finish reading this article.
Surfline. Lying liars lying. No credibility not unlike the wsl. Go figure.
‘Jack Robinson’s Full Load’
His next film title.
Followed by Jack Robinson in “Backdoor Specialist”
i knew the forecast must be cooked when one of the commentators said something along the lines of; ‘some people like it onshore out there’.
i mean, maybe? but it looks like shit.
Bro wrote a horny write-up just to tell us about the new surf flick.
I salute the effort.
great as always, but must say your “fog of a strong hangover” articles are epic.
looking forward to the wrap.
speaking of Ben Larg, you ever surf in the Hebrides?
looks like some pretty fun surf….and beautiful beaches for a family holiday.
Went to a beach on the west coast years ago where the water looked like a snapshot of a lovely blue water, white sand Carribean paradise. Wading in was enough to send one into cardiac arrest, it was so damn cold.
The highlight of the trip was fishing with my 4YO son at the time and catching a good-sized pollock, which we had for our dinner.
I note the site of the piscean triumph, below in red, for your elucidation. https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
sounds wonderful.
thank you for elucidating
Lots, mate. Lots. Absolutely idyllic. Would recommend
I’ve not visited Scotland yet.
Looks incredible.
It wasn’t but a decade ago when I learned of my Scottish heritage.
Looking forward to a visit to the family lands.
Definitely gonna have to put Heberdes on the itinerary.
JP wasn’t yet born probably but Lynch (the Wayne one not the screwy one), Damien Hardman & then Occy before Medina and all minus the poo stance…
I love that pic of Wayne doing the big hook under the lip while scrawny Barton (in the juniors no less) looks up in awe.
Late 80s almost all the goofies looked the same on their backhand at Bells. Occy and Tom Carroll were a bit different but geez there wasn’t a lot of difference between Hardman, Lynch, Page, Bain, Ho, Macaulay, all doing the big 1am backhand snaps. Especially at Bells where the inevitable oncoming shoulder really lent itself to a big backhand turn.
Hardman really had it nailed because he could do the same turn 4 times and get a huge score. Later they changed the judging criteria and you had to do 4 different turns to get a huge score. That’s why Mick Fanning did so well, he knew which 4 turns to do at Bells, which although it’s generally fat, is not an easy wave to surf well.
You’d be one of the few people that have seen that photo. It used to be on a wall at Rip Curl. Wayne was doing his patented hook under the lip while Barton was pushing water well in front of him. Agreed that after Lynchy showed the way (Star Wars pun intended) other goofy foots followed suit. It’s just that Hardman was so surgical about it.
A few years ago they had it printed on the photo montage from the Winki carpark down to the Bells carpark. It had a list of all the winners with a photo of them surfing Bells. They used that one for Barton, which might be a bit unfair but it’s a great photo.
It is and fits the ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ line
You may want to venture over to https://www.swellnet.com/news/form-guide/2025/04/22/rip-curl-pro-bells-beach-2025-day-2 and check my response to former BG cub reporter Sheep Shearer’s piece.
Saw your post which has for some reason disappeared. I’m from Lorne. You probably know my old man (he competed there too). Fuck, you might even be my old man. That would be funny.
Is your mum Asian? Do you have to shave morning, noon & night? Just kidding. Not your dad. The post set off the spam alert. Here’s what I wrote in response to cub reporter freeride76’s well written, I thought, piece on the contest. https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
The whole scene from what little I saw was somewhat farcical. Needs some serious scrutiny. Taking the knee is one thing but taking your knee is something else altogether. Another nail in the coffin for open ocean surfing I would suggest after this season of near incomplete events.
Nice way to avoid the cut after a decade long journey to the tour. The ol injury wildcard trick for another go around.
Strange both knees were being held during the Oscar winning performance.
Let’s hope it isn’t a clean ACL for the Moroccan stallion.

Opened YouTube, saw whitecaps and burgers, closed YouTube and stared at a wall in the airport for 2 hours.
Sitting down no doubt
If my moonshine memory is correct, Brutey said it was gonna be a good Bells forecast this year.
And, has he been banned from the contest site by the wOsl again ?
https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Speaking of banned, looks like Timmy cooked his goose once more, oh well, never mind…
yeah we have been done up by a couple of unseasonal lows and a cyclone in the NW , which has given us the real La Nina pattern here which is onshores /more onshores….but have 2 smaller days coming up with offshores and still soo warm for here….the surfers especially the goofy’s didn’t want to surf smaller perfect winki waves last weekend….shoulder high ,clean, a lot better than yesterday……
so new forecast ……2 x small clean days….then weekend offshore in the mornings onshore in the arvos….about head and a half high……at least it’s contestable ….
In another, perhaps first episode of “I’d Rather Hear It From You”, tell me Maurice, what’s the backstory of Bells. Why the name? Were the stairs a added benefit, or a moment of there was really no need? Sure I could Google this sort of stuff, but then the Title of this below the line knowledge drop would be called “Why Ask Maurice When You Could Just Ask Google”
William Bell owned the land
The Bell family owned all the land (way back the days of early white settlement), there’s a tiny town called Bellbrae just over the hill a few Km away that is also named after them.
yep the Bell family , Bells also has an indigenous name Djarrak……….yes we needed stairs as when it’s wet it’s incredibly muddy / wetsuit /cold etc……originally cement stairs now elevated wooden ones …..so was a big need for…same with the car park….was mud hole so had to be surfaced…..been a great fight to stop development……the beaches and foreshores have remained the same except for the sea level erosion, which is really noticeable here…….but still the same as 50 years ago , except all the replanting has really enhanced the area , thanx to our greenies!
Is there any local indigenous surfers there? Surely there must be at least one, if not more that have graced the area with their presence, no matter if they ever competed. After all, is it not traditional for local aboriginals to adorn the face of the victor?
C’mon Otto have a bit of class mate.
You got it wrong, I’m genuinely interested in understanding the stories we don’t get to read about Bells. My inquiry is not coming from any place resembling disrespect. Quite the opposite actually. While I know a decent amount of history of surf contests at Bells, I admit it’s otherwise very peripheral.
I mean no harm. Just genuine interest in stories about a place that has impacted surfing, but for someone not Australian that’s looking in from the cheap seats, I’d like to hear, or read more about the place that isn’t readily available.
I know your gut reaction may understably be the assumption I’m being antagonistic, but that honestly isn’t the case here.
hey Otto, yeah I know your questions were an honest attempt at getting more info……there are always back stories ……but am trying to see if they will let me back out there , as I was person non grata for quite a few years…….onwards and upwards…get my test results back today…so it’s another great day of being here…haha and the book….
You can pretty much sum up the colonial history of Australia as anywhere hospitable to the white man was taken over first. Mostly disease hit them before any white man actually arrived on the scene. This is well documented.
There was a white guy, a convict who escaped who was one of the very first to come down this way, William Buckley. He hung out with the local mob for over 20 years and a lot of info comes from him.
Some of his stories were obviously invented after the fact, like meeting supernatural beings, and he does mention cannibalism and setting fire to the forest to wipe out a tribe that had been attacking them.
Whether this is true or simply what Victorian readers wanted to hear has been debated.
As you head west from Bells it tends to get nastier, a lot of very bad things happened, people pushed off cliffs and stuff (there’s a surf spot called massacre point).
Certain old time pastoral families (who are still around) did some really bad things out that way.
I don’t know about the heritage of the few people who have Aboriginal heritage in the area. It’s not considered a polite question for a white person to ask.
I appreciate the response
all the locals were massacred….there’s about 30 original Wathaurong left , Humey who does the face paintings and welcome to country is from another mob , but has permission from the local elders to do welcome to country and also to,” adorn the faces of the Victor”…..it’s a very sad history , that is slowly being corrected!
Thursday and Friday look like being offshore but it won’t 6-8 ft like everyone hopes for. Probably shoulder to head high though and as long as the wind doesn’t swing around too much it will probably be pretty good. Maybe a bit lully between sets, though Bells always gets a lot of swell. Not sure if they’ll be able to get the whole comp out of the way in 2 days though.
I get super sick when the WSL does. (At either end of the spectrum.)
When did Derek start writing event recaps?
It’s a poor pastiche. If even that
“…whilst Kanoa Igarashi bukkaked to victory.” Glad we missed this.
Absolute scenes.
I feel like I need to go to my dr for some kind of testing after reading this. Just watched the clip of Ramzi Boukhiam laying in the shorebreak with no medics in sight. WSL is trash.
I’ve had 4 ACL tears and reconstructions so I understand the genuine pain of realizing you’re about to go through all that shit again – but who the fuck ambles across the reef with their back to the ocean and nary a glance back???
That’s a lot of tears. Yea that was weird how he got hit while facing the beach
the first one repaired >35 years ago is like a permanent sore injury, the last one about 5 years ago is as good as new. surgery advances are great 😁! Ramsi ignoring the ocean behind him looks more like a meme for kookslams than a Moroccan pro surfer coming in!
Bells look really fun yesterday. And the forecast looks good at this point. Not sure why all the grumbling from the bg regulars. Beats clean small zippy Winki. Love the look of the Bells Bowl.
Spoken as a true Steamers local.
Many similarities no doubt. I’ve always enjoyed consistent, meaty chunk ( even if not super clean ) over pristine, perfect albeit weak and inconsistent.
It’s because in our heads, comps have to be classic for the entire event waiting period. Yesterday was typical Victorian weather, it’s extremely rare for a Bells comp to be good from start to finish; that’s just the way the weather patterns work here. Northwest (offshore), then southwest (lumpy biggish swell but windy cross shore and not great fun), then funky winds on a dropping swell for a few days, then another front with wind from the West.
It will be the same at Margaret River, but potentially worse, because as the desert heats up, the hot air rises, and brings an onshore wind (AKA the Fremantle Doctor) almost every afternoon, so you’ll get a lot of afternoons put on hold.
Queensland weather patterns are completely different, it could be classic from start to finish, but equally, it could be tiny.
Thanks LWSS. Never been to Oz but have watched the comps closely forever. Being a Goofy I’ve noticed mid period ( 12 to 14 second ), consistent, kind of chunky onshore Bells Bowl seemed super fun on the backhand.
Looking forward to Friday
Bye bye
If you look carefully at the footage of Ramzi “slipping” on the reef, you can see a Mossad snorkel in the background.
