Hearts flutter as Surfline predicts “bombs” on opening day of Teahupo’o Pro!

The penultimate World Surf League Championship Tour event is but days away and Surfline, the WSL’s official forecast partner, is predicting big, burly waves. The show will begin arriving at “the end of the road” likely as soon the small, slight US Open of Surfing wraps today, though the official contest window does not open until August 7.

Surfline has declared in a piece titled “bombs before pros” that, “Coming out of the Southern Ocean and into the southwest Pacific, are back-to-back storms that produced seas over 45 feet.”

And, “That’s a long way of saying that we have a large, multi-day run of upper-end paddle swell heading to Teahupo’o for early to mid-next week There are some wind concerns on Monday as the tail end of the front associated with the storm south of the area brushes by.”

But, “This whole pattern looks to break down later next week, which means gradually easing swell for the opening days of the Tahiti contest. Easing is a relative term, as it’s still going to be pretty solid on the 7th before coming down some on the 8th into the 9th.”

Well that all seems pretty dang inconclusive, reading it back. The “bombs before pros” bit even downright misleading. But let’s talk a little turkey, while we’re here. It it is, in fact, on the bigger side, who does it benefit most? The top five, those headed to Fiji for Finals Day if it all ended today, are Yago Dora, Jordy Smith, Kanoa Igarashi, Italo Ferreira and Ethan Ewing. Six through ten, Griffin Colapinto Filipe Toledo, Jack Robinson, Barron Mamiya and Leonardo Fioravanti.
