"Be sure to follow surf etiquette and go when the water is less busy."
It was very many moons ago, now, that the Florida-bred billionaire Dirk Ziff “bought” the Association of Surfing Professionals and turned it into our World Surf League. Oh those early days were particularly heady. The first CEO, Paul Speaker, promised this Sport of Kings would soon be bigger than the National Football League. A gorgeous headquarters was established in Santa Monica, California, top Hollywood executive Erik Logan was poached from the mighty Oprah Winfrey to head the WSL’s studio division. The future as bright as brand-new veneers.
Though it is almost impossible to think there were any rifts, back then, what with the glowing success of the League today, but there were small factions, in the surfing community, who were grouchy.
Ziff, taking the microphone eight years ago after winning his first Waterman of the Year award declared:
Some of you are here in this canyon. Journalists, and other influential voices who unload on social media. I wonder if some of you get up every day and stir the milk into your coffee, thinking about what you can write that day that might humiliate the WSL. It goes way beyond constructive criticism, which we all need and which the WSL frequently deserves, and into the realm of foul spirited attack, which I think we can all agree we have enough of right now in this country.
I have a message to the haters, and it is simple. Be tough. Call us out. Keep us honest. Tell us what we need to improve.
But don’t pretend you don’t know that when you go beyond constructive criticism and cynically try to rally negative sentiment towards the WSL, when you try to take us down, you are not just going after us. You are going after Kelly Slater. You are trying to take down Lakey Peterson. You are going after the dreams of Caroline Marks and Griffin Colapinto. You are undermining the hopes of every kid who lives with salt in their hair, dreaming of being a world champion one day.
And I ask you: Why? It seems pretty obvious that if the WSL keeps growing in popularity, and surfing takes its rightful place among the great and elite competitive sports, everyone connected with our sport, and certainly all the members of SIMA, will prosper, except maybe a few grumpy locals who have to deal with some new faces in the lineup. So…why not work together?
And there it was. “Grumpy locals.” A blight on surfing’s otherwise welcoming and wonderful shining path. It was, of course, assumed that the grumpy local would become extinct once surfing took its rightful place among the great and elite competitive sports but Vogue Magazine is warning its readers that a few still lurk.
In its highly-anticipated The Best Off-the-Beaten Path Airbnbs for Surfing, from New Zealand to Portugal, Vogue shared hot tips on both where to stay but, more importantly, how to navigate various iconic lineups. For a trip to Ucluelet, in beautiful British Columbia, for example, “the water is cold year-round and a thick wetsuit is required.” In Punta Banco, Costa Rica, “If you plan to take surf lessons, the owners of this eco lodge suggest bringing cash.” And in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, “Many surf spots have rocky or reefy bottoms, so consider wearing booties.”
If wanting to Airbnb a mid-century modern gem in Malibu? “Locals are known to be somewhat territorial at Surfrider Beach, so be sure to follow surf etiquette and go when the water is less busy.”
Aye.
I guess the grumpy local survives in some pockets. Hopefully by LA28 he or she will be officially eradicated.
Fingers crossed, anyhow.

Locals only, dude…
Liam ripping in that one but his cameo in the boog flick so much better.
Seriously that vid was pure gold.
Go when malibu is less busy, like at 2am. But not full moon.
how do ya rate Robbo?
You forgot to mention fins facing frontways Sophie Goldschmidt. She was the beginning of the end for the WSL IMO. Elo tried to save the sinking ship but drove it head first into the iceberg.
Thanks SC that was the best thing to happen to me all week.
Now I can at least have a smile on my face as I go to the hospital for the fucked meds some crook doctor prescribed for my infected tooth which has my intestines full seppo and in knots at the moment.
I just started watching, got a couple minutes in, and had to pause so I could comment on how epic that headstand spinner was.
Most innovative move I’ve seen in any boardsport in decades!
Malibu died many years ago when the grumpy locals either got steamrolled or rolled over. Except, of course, Andy Lyon, who is still a cock. But he can’t help it.
Lol. Come on mate. You guys said the same thing about robo and ethan.
I think you have BG confused with a site where people discuss surfing.
That’s his stomping ground, over there.
Russel is such a nutter when he’s on one, but a genuinely nice fella when he’s keeping clean. Seen him take down the entire field at their main November contest over there, some years back.
Though, this newer contest may now be the more important one; prestige-wise. I hope they get massive swell that puts the fear of god into the remaining competitors.

He tagged Zed Layson who als0 took down young Ke11y in a contest. Zed was the most natural talented surfer I ever shared a line up with around my age until I moved to North Shore.
Thanks for the link. Seems that Russ is doing better now.
Never seen Zed surf but know that he’s a total legend. He moved back to Bimshire to start shaping, just when I stopped going over there regularly. Hope that his business did well. The mass market of popouts always made it hard for the little shapers, although it made them raise their game.
Russel was ripping in that link. Being sober when you cross that 40 year mark really makes a difference if an athlete is still trying to maximise their performances.
“Child Pirates” old man was the first one of our group to go down and spend a lot of time in Barbados. Got to the point all the Bajans would come up for ECSC and each of us would host one. Mark Holder got a lot of well deserved attention back then. We delivered boards to Zed for Allen White that trip. he was the first person I ever heard articulate wanting a board to be thin and cut like a knife through the water.
That was incredible. Guy is ripping so hard. Got a little Curren-esq bottom turn thing going on.
The grumpy local is pointing one way but the yellow triangles are pointing the other , mixed messaging from a home schooled trustafundian
Oh yes, the new Drag boog movie. An undeniable thing of wave riding art.
Yeah, haven’t seen a ton of him but he seems to tick all the boxes. Got the free surfer X-factor and still has grinded it out with wins in the ISA.
I see he’s got a Bells wildcard too
Think the recent influx of “Indonesian Surf Guide / Coaches” may be the biggest scurge in world surfing at present. Guess theyre making huge $$$ in Indonesian terms but they really know how to fuck a lineup up!!!! Give me a grumpy any day…
You say he has what it takes, but is he willing to give handy’s and possibly more to some horny judges?
Cause that’s what it’s going to take.
Julian, best technique in the last decade
Anyone seen this? Re-runs from a decade ago? On Plex and the other one? https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
most of it was hard to watch the first time around. so…
Great name BTW
Finally the recognition we deserve. Thank you you all for making this happen.
