"Sacrifice the kook!"
If there is one thing I am invested in, over all others, it is ballet. My daughter has been dancing for the last seven years, hours upon hours a day, days upon days without break. Classical ballet was born in renaissance Italy, refined in French palaces and imperial Russia then, after the revolution, the great Soviet Union, throughout Europe over to United States and all points east. Master choreographers like Petipa, Bournonville, Balanchine adjusting ever so slightly. Master teachers like Vaganova and, again, Balanchine, subtly shifting, pushing forward.
It’s an exact and exacting art, requiring a specific body able to replicate precise movements from tips of toes to tops of fingers and necessitates a wild pursuit of perfection. The daughter spends, on average, three hours a day, five days a week in the studio, when there is no show for which to rehearse. Five hours a day, six days a week, when there is.
There are no holidays.
Ballet, along with opera, orchestral music and painting/sculpture make up the very core of the fine arts, pursuers of each not striving for fame or fortune but rather something deeper. The very essence of meaning, perhaps.
The whole business is much like our surfing core lords.
Derek Hynd, Jamie Mitchell, the bros who boogie Shipsterns etc.
You can image the rage that poured from ballet and opera, specifically, yesterday, then, when Kylie Jenner-Kardashian’s boyfriend Timothée Chalamet slagged the two off as “dying.”
Sitting across from Matthew McConaughey as part of a rabid Oscar push for his role as ping pong player Marty Supreme, Chalamet declared, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera. Things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’”
“All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” he continued, twisting the knife further until pulling it out and finishing with the coup de grâce, “Damn, I just took shots for no reason.”
Reaction from the ballet and opera world was swift and fierce.
Megan Fairchild, a principal at New York City Ballet shot back, “Timmy, I didn’t realize you were a world class dancer or opera singer, who simply chose not to pursue it because acting is more popular. Ballet and opera aren’t niche hobbies people opt out of for fame.”
Soprano Candice Hoyes throwing down, “Opera is not Keeping up w Kardashians. I hope (Chalamet’s) movies endure for a few hundred years like opera and ballet … this is why knowing history is powerful.”
On and on and on it piled, harsh recriminations, brutal fun-makings, and sharp truth-pointings, from sophisticated corners around the globe.
A real public barney execution.
I read the savage takedowns of the li’l fella from the parking lot, whilst waiting for the daughter to finish class, savoring them all, then shared a Hollywood Reporter piece on the matter with a wonderful friend who knows Hollywood, surfing and the fine arts.
He simply replied, “Never mess with the core, everyone knows that, silly Timmy!”
Everyone except kooks, that is.
The lesson, at the end, taught by one Kirk Lazarus nearly a decade ago.
“You went full Kardashian, man. Never go full Kardashian.”

I was just thinking the same thing.
https://uploads.disquscdn.c… Tried to change it. This is what GPT kicked out. But cunt was no trouble.
ive had it, read above…(or below idk)
boooooooooooring…
had the opportunity to see the bolshoi in a public park (free!) in rio de janeiro some 35 years ago, for sure the greatest art spectacle i have ever seen in my life… the amplitude on those grand jeté performed by those dudes, phew, can’t find the word to describe the emotion in my hearth upon seen that, certainly the sickiest athletic move ever witnessed, guys lifting over two meters with the ease i can’t leap over a puddle… your girl are really blessed to pursue such a noble form of expressing herself, hope she finds a great path in that art & always count on your sweet love and support, i just admire you for that even more than your verve with the words…
wish my eventual kid do that…
Mic drop.
Dude. 95% of your posts are basically rimming SC.
It is kind of… weird… isn’t it? Am I the only one wondering whether Crayfish and SC are lovers or something?
When you fuck yourself it’s called masturbation
Marty Supreme was shit
Absolutely terrible flick. I gave it one star.

Your family may have left you ..but you’ll always have beachgrit. It’s gonna be fine.
Is that you Strayan Cunt?
You’re about 8 years too late for that one to hit. But thanks for taking the time thinking about me and opening a Disqus account honoring my legacy.
I don’t get Hollywood or the Oscars anymore. Some how they have determined this kid as the next Leo or something and keep pushing him on us. He’s alright but not that great. The old lady likes to watch all the oscar movies before awards. So we watched Sinners and If I had legs I would kick you this week. They both started off ok then just got so artsy and weird. Same with Bugonia. Can’t we just get a normal movie? Speaking of. Have you seen Train Dreams? Best movie I saw this year and the fact Joel Edgerton or movie didnt get a oscar nod is a travesty.
100%. The missus exactly the same re Oscar nominees and have had exact same response. Bugonia gets points for being the weirdest thing I’ve seen in a while ha
With you entirely until Bugonia. That movie had me thinking for days, afterward!
Maybe I should re watch more sober lol
Where’s he from again?
Bet that daughter of his knows how
https://uploads.disquscdn.c… If that ain’t a meant for tshirt, then I don’t know what is
Hey you tell that bogan roo fucker I said hello and we miss him. You think he’s able to be rehabilitated and retrained? I don’t know if I’d like the cunt that way.
I attempted to do a little ballet after I stepped on the biggest damn beach tar glob I’ve ever even seen short of a recent oil spill this afternoon.
Chas i commend your dedication and investment.
But i could never put my kids through the ‘three hours a day, five days a week / five hours a day, six days a week’. Ballet or anything else really.
That sort of intensity just kills it for me. Free time is needed even if just for doing nothing.
My daughters did ‘ballet’ for a year, and it was great, but that was that. I failed at being a core ballet dad, not fussed about it.
I completely get it and if the kid didn’t have both the ability and the dream, I’d be done. It is brutal. But she’s got both… so here I am!
s2
Sounds like a one way road then. Very happy for your kid having found her calling, and having such a supportive family. All the best to her.
This reminds me many moons ago i sent you a silly ig video of some hitherto unseen canoeing ballet. Lets resurface this ancient classical artform, if only just to upset timmy chalam:
Just be happy that ballet doesn’t have marathon “finisher, but not a finisher” medals like this year’s LA Marathon. Racers can stop at mile 18, and still receive an LA Marathon Finisher Medal. The state of sport is in rapid decline.
Olympic Surfing LA should be quite the unfinished but finished product.
My lifelong dream would be getting a classical training in drawing/painting/sculpture, and I was pretty explicit about that as a kid. Antonio Lopez Garcia is a favorite in that vein.
Props to Chas being such a supportive father and leaning into supporting his daughter in what is probably the most beautiful performing art. Not many kids are lucky to have parents that properly appreciate the arts, and some, like in my case, actively suppress it! Roll of the dice
and you make do with it and enjoy life regardless.
My elementary school was across the street from the Art Center of Design before it moved to Pasadena. Entered their youth program in second grade and remained until HS.
What a great experience.
Epic Hip. Thankfully the old habit of drawing and doodling stuck around and this past year I’ve made a concerted effort to give that side more attention (art classes, museum visits, materials, TIME!, etc…). Never too late to lean in. If no partner or kid on the horizon being in my early 30s… why not now?
I’m finding most of my gen spent their lives working, thinking that they would join me in my lifestyle once they retired. Most never calculated that theywould not be physically capable in their mid 60’s.
Do it now. Whatever your dream may be
The way to retire successfully is to pick a discipline at your age and devote your quiet time to practicing it. By the time you reach my age, you’ll be accomplished and engaged as a retiree, easy transition because of that immersion
No notes Hip, no notes. Sound advice.
Might have to wear a beret and grow a mustache.
Would you recommend flirting with a longboard in your 40’s? Asking for a friend.
No, avoid like the plague
That time is coming, you don’t have to rush it
Thanks, Bog.
Bog just makes me think of a shitter per the Aussie parlance.
That’s BogRAIL, mon frère.
And you’re welcome.
So sorry, dear BogRail. I’m right there with you.
Speaking of the Theatre, “Now Days” is out in the theater, it’s a surf movie, with only chicks surfing…..I mean Women!, fk, sorry.
Love this! Proud Papa Chas. Bravo!
nothing better than the joy of watching your children excel.
Ballet is pure Art in Motion.
It’s great to see people keeping the art alive
I work with a great classically trained Italian artist that created some of most brilliant ballet paintings. let me know if you want to take a look. I’ll send you their URL
I want to see!
Twins Fine Art. can’t send you the url but you’ll find it.
Look under the CLASSICAL tab. while you’re there, peruse their other works. some of the finest Italian paintings I’ve seen. Classically trained at Accademia D’Arte, Florence.
I rep them so if you see something you like, don’t hesitate to reach out. they also do commissions if you’re interested in a commission of your favorite ballerina.
Another wildly irrelevant article, but better than MAGA, Biden and Kamala.Good luck to your daughter, Chas.If you cant make it to the top, where do you ballet?
Russia still state funded even in the minor provinces!
Don’t tell Trump there’s minor provinces, he’ll invade their next!
He’s so submissive to Russia, Surfads
one of the only articles Chas has done in months without politics and…….you had to go there.
hard not to go there……hmm ballet/Russians……now why are the Russians giving iran positions of US troops?
Ballet…love it been attending my granddaughters Ballet classes and shows for 8 years…one of lifes great rewards!
Nah, all good….you have to go where your mind lives and Trump lives in your minds 24/7. It’s like a sickness.
Personally, I just found this a refreshing article devoid of politics and hate. A celebration of art and his and his daughters love for classical arts…..but, yeah go for it.
what is it Chas says?: you keep doing you.
the sickness is believing trump and his never ending lies….so we are all affected now and living the dream?
