Taj Burrow is one of the most beloved surfers of all-time. The now-47-year-old burst onto the scene, nearly three decades ago, as a do-it-all phenom out of wild and wooly Western Australia. Burrow enjoyed a long Championship Tour career as a bridesmaid, coming second much, but also never seemed to take it too seriously and gracefully exited at the appropriate time, leaving surf fans wanting more.
Well, as you certainly know, the aforementioned CT swings into Burrow’s back yard in just over 24 hours and the World Surf League turned to the towhead to deliver a robustly positive spin on the waiting period forecast.
Burrow, ever the rebel, went the other way, opening with, “The forecast looks…” before scrunching his face into a negative scowl “… pretty wild.” Finding the happy thread for a moment, he continued, “Day one looks amazing then it looks like a huge storm incoming. It’s gonna be big and wild and onshore. But there’s always something so it’ll be entertaining, that’s for sure.”
Then came the dagger.
It will not be running at fan-favorite The Box, Burrow definitively declared, an alternate site often teased by the WSL and thus Mainbreak will be where our heroes and heroines bob halfway between Australia and Madagascar.
Sad.
Once, many years ago I was in Western Australia with Craig Anderson and I asked him to describe Mainbreak. He said, “I’d reckon it’s shit. One word shit. But if I had to give an in depth description I would say a fat left and right. Depends what you’re after. If you’re after doing cutbacks on a fat wave then it is your wave. I have surfed there a bunch of times and not once have I had any fun. I’d reckon it’s absolutely fucken shit.”
Burrow’s forecast, I suppose, not so negative by comparison.

I surfed with him heaps over there in the 90’s.

Ando and Philipa were out yesterday at my local giving a tube-riding masterclass to onlookers.
I was still too crook to attempt to paddle out to show them how to drop anchor / go over falls.
It actually looks way better today than yesterday….yeah Thursday looks 6-8 ‘ + clean offshore till arvo…then the weekend there’s now a couple of Glassy days with quite a lot of swell….then all fuck breaks loose…howling onshore and BIG for the rest of the week…..and possibly small 2-3″ on the 26th…will need to cherry pick the conditions…hope they do better than Bells!
shame they never used south point as a backup to the backup, if they really had someone that understood the local conditions they would have picked it as a alternate for this time of year.

WA has had several seasons of big summer swells recently.
I used to love surfing south point (and injidup) but it’s not really a high performance wave. North Point looked really sketchy, if you fucked the takeoff you were gonna get obliterated, plus it never broke when it was small (unlike south point).
Only need round two to go ahead for surfival, after that who cares?

No-one surfs out there except the old boys…….whenever main break is 6′ plas and offshore it’s one of the last places you would look……TB not sure I have ever seen him surf out there except in a heat…..

I have a regular stretch out routine I do every morning but I aint going to yoga classes mate, and definitely no 20 minute stretch out sessions on the beach either haha
To be honest before I went on my 40th to Indo with a dozen mates I did 4 months of pilates as I was worried about surfing 2-3 times a day instead of 1-2 times a week like normal. Was amazing! felt amazing! touched my toes for the first time since I was kid and swore I’d keep it up on my return. Now 52, never been back nor have I touched my toes since.
hahahaha I’m hearing ya mate. Thing is with me I did my ACL badly surfing at Tallows about ten years ago and couldn’t work for 6 months or surf for around 10. Working with the Physio he told me it would always play up unless I kept up the stretching regime we worked on. Only takes 10 minutes but I do it every morning still cuz I just cannot afford another 6 months without working haha faaaaaaaark that

5 hrs? The waves must have been cooking.
The only time I surfed 5 hours straight was epic waves with a huge crowd (took time to get your waves) and I couldn’t go into the sun for 2 days after. Went from “don’t really wear sunscreen” to “I always have Vertra/Headhunter on me” in one day.
Lots of waves starting stopping pulses. The circus just left town after a swell event, still had to yell a few people who left their etiquette at home. Also met some lovely travelers, and hilarious banter all day will the local guys and gals. Wholesome five hours.

Mainbreak just might be the most boring name for a surf spot imaginable.
