‘They’re in Plague Proportions’: Push Grows to Put Shark on Australian Menus

"There are more sharks now than I have ever seen in my life and anecdotal evidence from millions of fishos in Australia will back that up."

A popular Australian fishing channel has challenged the status quo that places humans many rungs below the Great White and bull shark, and has called for the fish to become a delicious human and, or pet treat.

Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction on Facebook, home base for the fishing expert and TV presenter, has a little over 330k followers and, a recent post, opened the debate on how to deal with unprecedented sightings, numbers, attacks, deaths and so on.

“With the amount of sharks that we have in our oceans right now, in Australia in particular, you might be watching from somewhere else in the world and the sharks are being decimated or whatever. Not in Australia my friends,” says Berg.

“There are more sharks now than I have ever seen in my life and anecdotal evidence from millions of fishos in Australia will back that up. They’re out of control, they’re in plague proportions, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to farm these fish or harvest these fish from our oceans and sell them for food. As food, it’s good food. Or even pet food.

Here Berg pauses for theatrical impact.

“But no, they’re endangered.“

It’s been four long years since the idea of putting Great Whites on dinner plates was last posited. The food blogger Tizi, you’ll remember, delighted and thrilled her eight-million followers by cooking and eating a juvenile Great White shark, a protected species even in her native China where exotic animals are regularly enjoyed as delicious treats.

Spectators watched as Tizi unwrapped the fish, lay down beside it to illustrate its size, even if it was small by Great White standards, sliced it in two, barbecued the tail then boiled the head in a “spicy broth.”

The food was shared with the locals, who unanimously praised the rare meat.

“It may look vicious, but its meat is truly super tender,” said Tizi.

“ …anecdotal evidence from millions of fishos in Australia will back that up.”

Me thinks this might be a bit of an exaggeration. At least he admits it’s anecdotal as opposed to scientific.

Travis Edgar

So…. Illegal fishing in “Australian” waters by every other nations goes on daily without any penalty, why not just clandestinely hire them to target some whites and bulls….?

KRIS

Worked in a fish n chips joint a while ago. Local fishos would periodically offload a shark as trawler by-catch.
We’d simply add ‘flake’ to the specials board, or FB post, and WHAMMO! $$$ … superior to farmed, frozen, then imported Vietnamese Bassa. (and way cheaper)

I am a Crayfish Popsicle

I don’t give a FUCK about the Mercury at my age.

I, like most people are riddled with many undiagnosed cancers and fucked up with microplastic toxification.

Give me Tomahawk sized Battered Flake on the cheap, cooked in proper Lard or Tallow too while we are at it.

I will sign a waiver, while I play in my blue asbestos sandpit

I doubt Flake will be the thing that kills me

Blowin

Go catch your own. Shark fishing is the easiest fishing in the world.

I am a Crayfish Popsicle

WE can’t even do that anymore man

Always, at the the end of my last nightshifts, I used to head out with a bottle of Wild Turkey and drop some lines, and fall asleep on the best waterbed ever…

Can’t do ANY of that anymore

Is that Bonnie Doon?

He had to move the kingswood and the torana to get to the boat

I am a Crayfish Popsicle

You have no idea how relevant that is to getting the boat in and out.

Always like one of those sliding puzzles

@TheRealJackMeoff

There is an Aussie legend who has been coming here for decades now, many years before me, absolute ripper and a great all around guy. Saw him last week with his two groms who were having a great go of it during groms and girls day.
I mentioned to him how good his groms were and how stoked they seemed to be, and he told me how pumped he was for his younger one as he was the youngest kid to survive a great white attack.
That hit me hard.
It’s all talk till it is up front and personal.

Blowin

Shark attack isnt an abstract concept in Australia. I know people who’ve been killed. People who’ve pulled victims out of the water. People who’ve been in the water when others have been killed and maimed. Plenty of people who’ve been hit but the board takes the brunt. People disappear and are registered as drowned when they are unable to recover a body in placid, clear seas.

I’m not special. Most surfers are in the same boat.

@TheRealJackMeoff

I have had a little exposure.
Knew Tamayo pretty well.
Seen my fair share in the lineup including an absolute beast of a Tiger who surfaced and did a backroll not even a couple feet away on the Big Island.
Lot of people attacked on the Islands, at least a few people a year.
No one is special, but I think about what if that was my grom, would I be okay with calling it the status quo or would I be fishing?
Clearly something has got to give over there, the numbers of attacks are over the top.

WIRE ‘Last Lion Tamer’ off the platter ‘Pink Flag’. Seminal. Essential.

Stick man

will )(e ever qualify(?) though is the real question…

Strayan Cunt

Shouldn’t I be more worried about spotting commies in the lineup?

The Bitchy Crab

So many things to worry about so why worry!

Hippy

He’s possessed by doubt

Strayan Cunt

And that is why I tend not to bother Dez. Thank you for your actions today too sir and glad it all ended well, genuinely proud of ya

I am a Crayfish Popsicle

We eat them, they eat us.

It is a mutual agreement.

Wait till the sharks hear about batter and chicken salt

Travis Edgar

Do the little ones taste sweeter?

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

I wouldn’t eat anything over 6ft

Stick man

That’s NOT what she said…

Stick man

The Bitchy Crab

What do you think of the Queensland reg banning the killin’ of the five feet and over bulls?

Stick man

I drink ’em… Red Bull Shark

@TheRealJackMeoff

Sounds like a great name for a new drink at the club.
Red Bull, vodka, and about a quarter gram of cocaine…

Blowin

Aussies should have shark back on the menu as a regular item. Killing fish to feed pets is an abomination. World needs less pets, not to denude the oceans of life just to keep someone’s mutant rat terrier living in comfort.
