In a just announced first of its kind deal, the Central American country El Salvador has made all Surfline cameras and in-depth reports free for any and everyone worldwide. “El Salvador has some of the best waves in the world, and we’re excited that the surfers who live there can lean on our cams and forecasts to make the most of it,” Surfline CEO Ross Garrett declared. “It’s also a great chance for travelers to get a closer look at all this coastline has to offer. We’re thrilled to bring this to life with Surf City El Salvador.”
Morena Valdez, El Salvador Minister of Tourism, added, “The collaboration will give surfers from El Salvador and around the world free access to the cameras installed at the country’s leading surf spots, turning them into a powerful showcase for the nation. This is part of our strategic alliance to continue positioning El Salvador as the best place to visit, invest, and live.”
El Salvador has made a heavy surf push during the seven, and counting, year presidency of Nayib Bukele even going so far as to purchase an entire event on the World Surf League’s highest-caliber Championship Tour. This year’s Surf City El Salvador Pro ran, of course, in the early bit of June and was won by Leonardo Fioravanti, on the men’s side, and Carissa Moore, on the women’s. But back to the Surfline-cameras-for-free bit, if you were a local, would you be frustrated with a concerted effort to clog lineups or would you very much enjoy not having to pay for a Surfline subscription any longer?
Also, if a whole country can buy free access, could a whole country also buy a blackout?

It’s a smart move by the El Salvador government – free access to webcams and forecast for the area can only be of benefit to the businesses that cater to surfing visitors.
Other locations that want to compete with El Salvador for surfing visitors, like Costa Rica and Nicaragua, may do the same –
El Salvador locals have their “secret spots” that work under a specific set of conditions, they will welcome the business from the increase in surfing visitors and still get plenty of waves.
I’d posit it’s golf. Water hungry, expensive, and worst of all…golfers.
