Surfer plane Caribbean
On why he ends up solo on most of his strike missions: “People are definitely apprehensive [about flying with him]. I can understand it. But my girlfriend has really warmed up to it, she joins me on some trips.”

How I butchered my interview with surfing’s flying man Michael Dunphy

“Everyone thought I was an idiot because I bought the plane before I knew how to fly."

I don’t remember the first time I saw a photo of Gas Chambers, the PR version, firing.

Or when I first laid eyes on Cane Garden Bay doing its thing.

Surely by the mid 80s.

All I know is that since the genesis of my Florida grom surfing life, the Caribbean has been a magical place of crystal-clear water and mind-bending barrels.

Seven thousand islands dotting a tropical sea that inundates more than one million square miles.

It’s like God’s apology to all the East Coast surfers saddled with Lake Atlantic summers and 5 mil winters.

There is an alternate universe where I skipped out on university and spent my 20’s navigating a sturdy Dutch-crafted sloop through reef passes and skirting shallow cays somewhere in the Antilles.

But, alas, in this universe I chased degrees instead of new latitudes.

So when Michael Dunphy’s travel posts started lighting up my algorithms a while back, I suffered maybe the worst FOMO of my middle-aged life.

Here’s the elevator speech background: Dunphy grew up in Virginia Beach, moved to New Smyrna over a decade ago, and chased the QS/Challenger series about as successfully as one can without ever making the big show.

In 2022, he took down Cole Houshmand in the final to win the Barbados Surf Pro and followed that up by taking out the O’Neill Coldwater Classic in 2023.

Given my decade plus tenure in Virginia Beach, I knew about Dunphy’s contest exploits – there’s only but so many VB locals (1) who can hold their own with Houshmand.

But contest wins and qualification points aren’t really in my wheelhouse these days, advanced age and divided attentions spans being what they are.

Then Dunphy leveled up.

A couple years ago, he traded his contest credentials for a Cessna – put differently, he quit chasing rankings and, from his home base in Florida, started chasing swell across the watery paradise early Europeans referred to as Mar de las Antillas.

Dunphy’s IG feed is now a wet dream of tropical barrels and cockpit POV feeds as he navigates all those latitudes I once fantasized about.

He’s basically living JJF’s life, just with better waves, no hectic open ocean crossings, and fewer worries about leeward anchorage.

Figuring we had at least some things in common – Florida, Virginia Beach, Caribbean surf love affairs – I decided Dunphy’s life would be marginally improved if we talked.

He may be regretting it now, but a week or so ago he agreed.

In response to a cold DM, he picked up the phone and rang your boy Rocks.

There is, of course, a dance to these conversations.

The subject is a well-known, even globally famous, surfer.

And the questioner is, well, me.

Which is pretty damn unimpressive in real life.

To make up for the imbalance, my basic warm-up strategy is to provide a few biographical tidbits, often consisting of semi-insider knowledge involving stuff the subject might know about.

Unfortunately, my approach immediately backfired, since poor Dunphy interpreted the awkward intro as an effort to pry out deets on secret spots.

Things somehow went downhill from there.

I forgot who his main sponsor was (Quiksilver).

I fucked up a simple question about his future plans by making a cringeworthy suggestion that maybe he had some secret projects he would like to unveil.

And then, in full kook fashion, I had to cut the call short because, with Ms. Rocks bossing minions around in Europe, I forgot I had to pick up my kid from elementary school.

In short, I full on chandelier-ed the interview.

But like a tube master wrangling a bucking foam ball – or a bush pilot dialing in a jungle landing strip during a surprise rain squall, pick your metaphor – Dunphy locked on and didn’t hang up.

On the plane: “Everyone thought I was an idiot because I bought the plane before I knew how to fly. But I was competing and pretty burnt on it, and I wanted to really challenge myself.

On whether he’s looking to explore Mexico and Central America by air: “For now, I’ve kept it to the Caribbean to the south and Montauk to the North. But I’m focused on adding more flight ratings and would love to expand my reach, Mexico would be very cool.”

On the various nooks and crannies he’s discovered: “Ha ha, I wanna do it the right way and be respectful. [Lengthy discussion of the BeachGrit faithful’s general antipathy toward blowing up spots and Dunphy’s commitment to keeping any new discoveries under wrap].”

On why he ends up solo on most of his strike missions: “People are definitely apprehensive [about flying with him]. I can understand it. But my girlfriend has really warmed up to it, she joins me on some trips.”

On whether his sponsors, including Quiksilver, …Lost, and Dragon, have been copacetic with his shift from contest junkie to strike mission pilot in an era where sponsors are famously belt-tightening: “They’ve been good, I think it’s been of good value to them.”

On whether he’s done competing: “I’ll still do the Barbados contest and the ECSC [East Coast Surfing Championships, held every year in Virginia Beach]. But I’m not focused on it.”

On what he does with his time when he’s not in the cockpit checking for mysto waves: “I still surf my balls off. And I’m focused on adding flight ratings. I just want to keep challenging myself.”

After the call wrapped, I texted to say thanks for talking.

Dunphy responded “nice to chat with you,” but almost certainly didn’t mean it.

And he didn’t invite me to co-pilot his next mission.

My FOMO unsated, I’m left to stalking his IG feed – and wishing I could teleport 33 years back in time to give 21-year-old Rocks some much needed life (and surf) advice.

Most people associate Cessna’s with the little entry-level models, but they do make bigger, faster, longer-range craft too.
Like DanesS&SS’s personal Citation Longitude, seen here passing Ventura’s Surfers Point and Emma Wood State Beach, heading home after popping down to Mexico to pick up authentic ingredients for ‘taco tuesday’.
Barrelled and Jen See are probably on board too, to share the fuel bill since the recent price hikes…

Rock’s did you happen to be in Cane Garden years back when PR went XXL?

Rocks local

if you’re talking the march 2018 swell, that’s literally the month my first marriage imploded and I had to move into the basement of a buddy’s house near 75th and Atlantic

Beef & Beer (Disqus)

So you actually told him that you were writing a thing for BeachGrit ?
No bloody wonder he didn’t take you up for a spin.
Now if you’d told him the interview was gonna be published in one of those respectable fancy online mags like Stab, Inertia or Swellnet you would’ve been flying to a deserted island before ya could say “we’ll be returning with the plane stuffed full of illegal contraband”, and in no doubts about how he funds his lifestyle.

Speaking of which, my own experience of flying in Cessna’s back in the 1990’s always involved crossing a 60 mile stretch of water with lots of weed in the back.
Was always a certain rare thrill on the final approach before landing, wondering if any of the cars parked below contained cops.
Aahhh those were the days…

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

1) private plane owners typically have a short shelf life. Like the motorcycles of the sky.
2) writing getting good, Rocksy. Better than the pish sandwich we’ve been fed the last few years since LT left (and where’s Chazz?).
3) BG antipathy to revealing spots–surely you jest, unless you don’t count JSC as a BG’er? Dude has revealed more secret spots than Trump showing himself to 12 year old girls. Only difference is JSC isn’t as much of a fuckwit piece of shit human. But not by much.

Nice one Rocks. I had a buddy years ago that was getting his Cessna flying hours under his belt and invited me and another friend on a trip to vegas for a night. Two take aways- First…. It took almost as long as driving and Second- You will never find me in one of those death traps again. As far as Dunphy goes. No idea how that kid still gets paid to surf.

Never put any money in bitcoin. Laughed at people when it dropped from $700 to $300 in 2013. I just never saw any use for it.

With crypto I just always felt like I was gonna be the sucker and I hate feeling like a sucker. It’s why I don’t enjoy gambling. It’s easy to criticize decisions with the benefit of hindsight but you need to judge the choices you make based on the information you had at that time. You really can’t blame anyone for taking profits just like I don’t blame myself for never buying or mining any crypto.

I have friends who have made themselves very wealthy with it. Good for them. Crypto wealth has the problem of easy come easy go.

Strayan Cunt

Rocks I really like you and your usual articles on here but this one just didn’t do it for me and I’ll explain why cuz I think creative feedback is helpful and a good thing.

I have been obsessed with surfing since I first started at 5 and it’s pretty much ruled my life ever since. While my love of it in its purest form is still intact my love of “pro” surfing has been diminishing for years now and recently pretty much fallen off the cliff.

Started with the whole WSL approach and then now with the whole sweeping these latest allegations under the carpet I’m pretty much out and don’t give a fuck. Unfortunately your article about an obviously very rich young man who surfs decent but not well enough to make the tour and has now taken to flying his own plane for surfs in the Caribbean comes at a time when the whole world is in a fucked up cost of living crisis.

You, Pacific North Pest, Picard and a few others constantly speak about how you have hit the jackpot by living life in the “American” way and marrying successful women who earn a fortune but have regrets about missing out on surfing opportunities. Well I went the other way and left school at 16, travelled the world surfing waves yous couldn’t even imagine and wouldn’t change a fucking thing.

Even after separating from my still wife life was ticking away beautifully until the majority of your fellow seppo countrymen voted the Fanta Menace in again and he completely fucked up the entire worlds economy and now many of us have gone from cruising to struggling for absolutely no fucking reason.

Now this is a long way round to saying I could not at this point give a flying fuck about some failed, trust fund cunt QS surfer who gave up competing and is now just flying himself, on his own private plane to do strike missions in the Caribbean.

No refection on you mate but I feel like many seppos you fail to realise just how fucking angry the rest of the world are at yous at the moment and how this was maybe not the best choice of subject matter. Personally I hope I never read a thing about this Mick Dumpy cunt again

Rocks local

Tiny Cessna ain’t exactly a Gulfstream, doesn’t take a pile of cash to pull it off , more about whether you’re willing to chance it (see surf ads comment)

Strayan Cunt

Ok mate let’s take that comment and spin it into some figures. How much did the tiny plane cost? How much does it take to fill up for his “strike missions”? How much are the flying lessons to get his license to do them?

Now I’m not going to google them but I imagine the cost is pretty high and fuck knows where someone finds the time with the modern day struggles of simply surviving to take flying lessons?

I imagine what a failed QS surfer makes these days from sponsors is pretty low so they certainly aren’t paying for it? So like I said I pretty much give zero fucks about Micky Dumpy or his trust fund attempts to find new waves in his personal plane mate

Barnycle

What a simplistic take. He’s not a failed QS surfer. He’s a successful QS surfer in that he did it for many years. He’s a failed CT surfer, which covers about 90% of all pro surfers.

there are literally hundreds of thousands of people, maybe more than a million, with a private pilots license. It’s not some sort of luxury.

don’t let the Man goad you into hating on your fellow man, Scunt. Keep your hate and anger for the system and the people running it; not those trying to find a bit of joy living on this earth.

Newsflash. You and I may be struggling financially but about 5% of people in places like Oz, US, Canada, NZ and England are doing very, very, very well. A second-hand Cessna is a simple purchase for them; of maybe buying a cheaper car or a smaller home.

also, if some surf rat had a workaholic grandpa who built some hardware or surfshop empire and he decides that his inheritance means he doesn’t have to work everyday making money to survive then all power to him/her as long as they’re not hurting anybody else. This guy doesn’t appear to be splashing his money around. He appears to be trying to work in the 2026 surf economy, the way that so many others are.

Imagine some cunt from Sierra Leone coming on here and starting to bitch that you own 3 surfboards when people in his country only have 1 surfboard. Or that you have four rooms in your home when every home in his village only has one room and everyone survives just fine. Would you think he had a good point?

Be wary of hating on your fellow world travellers.

deeks

I like the joint in the states where they pull their plane out of the garage and taxi down the street to the airstrip. !

Barnycle

I’m pretty sure there are hundreds of those sort of places scattered across their massive country. Randy Rhodes died in one of those sorts of places.

longtom2.0

I appreciate that logic and world view Barn.

Rocks local

btw, good on you for chasing the waves early , wholeheartedly support that call and yes am jealous of you and others who did the same.

But Dunphy a good dude , maybe one day you can block for him behind the rock ha ha

Abscessed Llama (Disqus)

Who knows he may trust.. From my recollection Dunphy’s old man was an airline pilot and/or air traffic controller. He still may have a cushion of sorts but don’t think so with making a few calls..

Rocks local

as for the world economy , didn’t vote for the big fella ever. And yes ms rocks is successful, but that’s one sliver of my story. I was born in a Florida trailer park , worked lawn crews and hauling shingles up ladders and picking okra in the south Florida sun all through my teenage years. Then worked my ass off ever since in a different way earning a couple degrees and putting in the hard time to succeed in a cutthroat industry. I own my own business , and slog every day to keep it humming. So yeah , the Iran stuff sucks and inflation is a bitch and please dont take a few comments about successful spouses to mean we’re over here sucking lollipops and fiddling while it burns.

Barnycle

Mate you didn’t have to defend your article or your life to the haters.

I’m seeing some shockingly simplistic takes here, lacking any sort of insight or forethought.

I’ve always admired the aussie, tall-poppy syndrome but never thought I’d see the embrace of the, too often seen in the Caribbean, crab in barrel syndrome.

all of this fear and anger is leading to some dark takes.

Barnycle

And, only as a joke, no wonder Rasta avoids surfing with these cunts even if it means he has to surf with great whites 🙂

Sean Connery (Disqus)

This is payback for a number of things mate. Let my highlight them-

-Australia the movie
-Not protecting Steve Irwin from that sting ray
-Ray gun making a mockery of break dancing
-Thinking you invented avocado toast
-Not one Australian coming over here and opening a decent pie shop.
-Hugh Jackman the smug cunt
-Not drilling the bight
-Your geographic ability to get to indo quickly
-Calling trunks..boardies
-Occy’s dreads
-Your disrespect of mexican culture by cooking their food poorly.

So please don’t take this out on Rock’s story. You can take it out on Dunphy all you like but not my boy Rocks.

Your inflation woes are much more the responsibility of domestic Australian politics than anything Trump has done.

In fact there’s a very strong case to be made in which our entire cost of living situation is entirely derived from Australian politics. Entirely. Blaming Trump is a poor take.

…..top fucking marks for use of the word “copacetic”. One of my favourite words in the English language, or any language for that matter.

JSC

If you buy a functional (not derelict) airplane before you know how to fly it, you are either rich enough not to care if it ever gets flown or you have an unshakable confidence in your own ability to learn and execute, as becoming a certified pilot is not something you can do in two hours –

Last edited 17 hours ago by JSC
Blowin

……or you have a dream.

Rocks local

Not to beat a dead horse , but this craft ain’t a G-6

JSC

Not a Gulfstream G-650 private jet, but not throwaway money either, at least for most folks –

A secondhand single-engine Cessna costs between USD $55,000 and $400,000+, depending on the model, year, and equipment. Older budget trainers like the Cessna 150 or 152 start around $55,000 to $70,000, while popular Cessna 172 Skyhawks average around $300,000 on platforms like GlobalAir.com

Black Rubber

Or you sell it for pretty much what you bought it for if things don’t work out. Not a ton of risk there.

@TheRealJackMeoff

Nice one Rocks.
Both of you are to be commended for having the grace and guts to do an interview.

Coincidentally, Rasta was recently talking about how much of a disaster the Billabong sea plane was.

He was on the terrible trip with Dorian where everything went wrong. So now Dorian, Rasta and Naude have all talked about what a bad idea a sea plane was for surfing in the pacific.

Rocks local

Ha , wasn’t there something along same lines in the how surfers get paid series ??

Barnycle

Yea. Naude talked about it first, amd in depth. Then Dorian, in his episode I believe. Now Rasta on the latest Dooma and Dane podcast.

Strayan Cunt

And just to prove I’m into equality and all that jazz, wouldn’t root xx
