Is Kelly and Adriano's ancient blood feud, thought to be long dead, alive and well?
Three weeks ago, the Brazilian Adriano De Souza mounted a wonderful and brave charge to win the Pipeline Masters and the world title. When you saw his trembling lips, didn’t it make you want to put a biscuit in his mouth and peck away the crumbs?
As Rory Parker, BeachGrit’s man in front of the webcast, wrote, “A decade of trying, constant shit talking from every direction. Head down, made it happen, never let the naysayers get him down. And that’s something. I catch a tiny amount of shit online compared to the guy, and you develop a thick skin, but sometimes shit makes it through. Easy to let the public ruin your brain, the fact that he didn’t is impressive in itself.”
Does sport get any better? The unfancied and unpretty Adriano De Souza, throbbing to his own pulse, galloping to victory?
But Adriano was gifted approximately 15 hours at the summit of the surfing world before the spotlight was turned off and aimed at Kelly Slater and his new wave pool.
“Worse still, though, is poor Adriano de Souza. Hours ago, literally hours, he was on top of it all. He was champion of the world, the first ever Brazilian Pipe Master too! He had etched his name into the record books and could sit back and be lauded for a hard-fought year. Except he couldn’t because when he woke up this morning the lauders were glued to computer screens not watching his year’s highlights but ogling Kelly Slater’s magnificent wave.
Chas Smith opined, “Kelly Slater is an absolute master of stealing the spotlight any time it drifts, slightly, from his handsome face. He was mad at me for having a cup of coffee and not talking about him and so he released a perfect video that is burning the Internet down.

“I want to be frustrated but he is so good at it, so utterly masterful, that all I can do is stand, mouth agape, like everyone else. Oh, my mouth is not agape at the wave. It scares me in a way that I cannot explain. Like, really points to the end of the world somehow.”
Of course, it doesn’t matter what people call you unless they call you pigeon pie and eat you up. But do you think Adriano taking the world title determined the timing of the wave pool clip, and that it snatches a glimpse of the shadow in Kelly’s feelings towards Adriano?
Let’s examine the evidence. Do you remember, four years ago, at the Hurley Pro when Adriano was in the worst temper? Watch!
I’m certainly not a world expert at body language, an expert at nothing except online shopping if truth be told, but it does seem that Kelly fudges when the interviewer Mitchell Ross asks for the causes of the event. Do you like it when Kelly likens Adriano’s intemperance to a chemical imbalance due to his “passion”? I do!
Do you watch this old clip and think, is there something there, in light of recent events?
I do now, but only because shortly after Kelly dropped his wave pool clip a BeachGrit reader screenshot this exchange between a Kelly Slater and another surfer. The reader couldn’t verify the authenticity of the parties involved, but it makes for interesting reading.

Do you wonder, is Kelly and Adriano’s ancient blood feud, thought to be long dead, alive and well?
Did the kernel of civility between the two just break?
Gotta love the KS troll machine

Classic heat: https://www.youtube.com/wat…
They did better. They owned WSL. 2 in a row, kid, remember?
Kelly picked a fight with Brazil and lost.
Man…. 11 titles and now the lake?? The bald guy is a freak, but can be a prick, too.
C´mon… Kelly can be a prick when he wants!!
No one here remember how an asshole he was about Jadson André when he lost to the brazilian the final in Florianopolis in 2010??
And Jadson is just one of the coolest guys in this whole WSL thing .
What did Kelly do to Jadson?
He wasn´t gracious at all in his post heat interview, saying shit like “let´s see if this Jadson can surf Teahupo”, and things like that. Bad loser!!
It was hilarious!
I was watching online. You could see how mad Kelly was for losing to that young kid. But, again… not gracious at all. And the irony? Jadson grew up and charged Pipe and Tahiti.
Jadson has to his credit, has moved forward in all aspects of his surfing… But he is responsible for the worst wave ever surfed in pro-surfing history.
Nobody is perfect.
Can anyone find that wave?
Jazz Hands in full effect… 1:02:50 with a slight improvement on his second 1:05:00 His arm waving was worthy of a 10 point score… But hats off to the man, he went on to win the comp!
https://www.youtube.com/wat…
Thanks for finding this! He’s literally flinging shit on all his competitors with every move. Vai Jaddy! But in all seriousness he looks like he has been surfing once a week for about two years on those waves. In his head he is ripping but everyone else is raising an eyebrow. He surfs with gusto though gotta give him that.
the fuck was that three pump bottom turn?!? Innovation.
I totally agree with this article. Beach Grit is the best surfing website.
takes fucking hours to load though
That’s being worked on…
faster than Stab
ehhhh, not for me lately. and fuck, i can watch these videos on a bunch of different sites, i can even read comments from this same group of cunts. only question is who is getting the money for these eyeballs, right? looks like its Banks right now. if BG has that ad revenue (they do) then you pay for things that make it easier to get my eyeballs, right? i do like the comments here, way less Cavvy, but fuck, what’s the product at this point?
If we’re being fair, Kelly’s style is kinda ugly too.
hahaha, it is too. The unsayable has been said. And his version of the claim was to manufacture elaborate recoveries from often quite straightforward manouevres. He high balled the judging for years doing that.
He is also the King of the nose blow claim…
Nailed it. He won world titles with his method of just falling down and then getting back up during anything. He is the hardest working, strategisingist, claim loving, bad sport of the whole tour… Yet we love him for it and hate others for doing a quarter of what he does to win.
you’re a fucking maniac
I remember watching that heat, Adriano went into some kind of hassling / claiming beast-mode and Slater rightfully took offense, I thought. As much as I respect Adriano and am happy to see him win this year, his trademark aggressive paddling strategies are bound to irritate from times to times. And he knows about it too… He got properly beaten up by Dustin Barca for it, during the Tahiti Pro in 2009. Slater on the other hand will certainly never get into a high-profile fist fight and it is scary to realize how much tension he can bottle up instead, how he never forgets and how far he would go to diminish the value of the people who ever dared crossing his path the wrong way.
If proven to be scheduled in advance, the timely release of Kelly’s artificial wave is the ultimate act of passive aggressiveness. Such a twisted move! But a great way for him to deliver a punch to the face of Adriano, who should record a remake of Beastie Boys’s Sabotage now. “IIII can’t not stand it! / I know you planned it! (…) You’ll shut me down with a push of your button?”
I actually wish Adriano goes for the repeat this year, just to see Slater announcing some mind-bending shit the very next day again.
Next on Ancient Blood Feud: Andy Irons VS Michael Campbell? Might as well bring on the OG, truly bad-ass version: Antique Blood Feud – Eddie Rothman VS Rabbit Bartholomew.
Fuck Eddie. Little transplant cunt gets to rule the north shore?! I would be way more afraid of Kai-Borg than little Eddie Rothman. Also, Makua, quit that Uke shit. Everyone is to afraid to tell you that you have no business singing Iz songs, but it’s true, brah. If you’re ever in San Diego, I’ll tell you to your face too
He might struggle to find you in the phone book “Johnny Utah”…
there is also the peter mccabe-Eddie rothman feud/drug deal gone bad.., the sunny garcia vs car full of mexicans cali road roage beatdown..or the ando vs lara enever nail polish color feud
What a bunch of crock!
The actual Slater wrote this on his insty account:
“There is no substitute for hard work and desire. Natural talent on its own has proven many times to do many great men no good. There is only one way to win a world title each year and this man figured out the riddle ahead of the rest of us this time. There is no one more passionate or applied or willing to go the extra mile and weeks on the road to win.
Congratulations on achieving a life goal today, my friend. @adrianodesouza #WorldChamp @wsl 2015″
I can’t work out if it’s more or less snarky and uncomplimentary than the pretend Slater one
Superfluous comma before my friend says it all.
He’s just pausing to emphasize for us plebes that they are indeed deep, deep homies.
instead of blood feuds can we get a parallel theme going about love-ins? e.g. bromances, romances, and other such gossip?
the advertising on that man in your advertising is working: “love is tender”.
by the way, could you ask him who did the tattoo? a chicken on acid? because that is some lousy inking.
I heard Luke Davis and Chris Ward are now Co-gay
Adriano has had Kelly’s number for years. In fact, I don’t remember the last time Kelly beat him. The Wave Pool was a lovely ‘fuck you’ but I doubt Adriano gives a shit. He’s probably working on his paddling strategy for Snapper right this second.
Kelly’s biggest “Fuck You” is his 11 titles.
Also remember that heat in Puerto Rico like 6 years ago…
…what happened in PR? I fear I might’ve slept through that one.
I remember, thats where it all kicked off.
Kelly got butt hurt because Adriano hassled the shit out of him as Kelly was about to win Title Ten.
Can you describe the events for me? The time difference, I remember, upset my sleeping patterns.
Nothing crazy, but everyone talked about the “extra dosis” of commitment of Adriano on that heat while Kelly was fighting for the 10th title…
“At the time, I was having a lot of ups and downs in my career and Kelly (Slater), by contrast, was about to become ASP World Champion for the 10th time. There was a great deal of attention on that event as it was such a historic occasion.
So I knew if I beat Kelly in the Quarterfinals…I knew that it was a heat that could change my life. I was fit and focused and felt like I was surfing really well. My confidence was high. I tried my hardest to beat him that day, but I lost when, even though I had the priority, he caught the best wave of the entire event. At the time, it was like receiving a punch at a UFC fight when you thought you are going to win.”
Where Brad Gerlach and Tomm Curren called that interference a teatrical act from kelly. After that heat i think adrianos record is 6×1. How come?
This is gorgeous speculation Dell, but hasn’t calling someone in surfing a “hard-worker” come to mean code for something completely odious.
…or the euphemism for unmarried male actors as “theatrical.”
what about unmarried male surfers as “dedicated.”
by the way, what is the convention grammar nazis? is it . before ” or ” before . ? also, is it ‘ or ” ?
Watch out for the upcoming Beach Grit article about ‘flamboyant confirmed bachelor’ Matt Wilkinson
Replacing the word “dad/father/step-father” in any WSL broadcast with “companion” would do wonders for the sport, Rock Hudson approved.
