It is World Surf League CEO Paul Speaker's best day ever! NFL + WSL = Yay!
What do you think World Surf League CEO Paul Speaker dreams about? Do you think visions of perfectly executed layback snaps dance across his cortex? Do you think his inner expanse is filled crisp 10.00 barrel to air combos?
I will say no! CEO Speaker does not know a layback from a daybed. The man doesn’t surf! What he really dreams of is a time when his beloved National Football League combines with surfing to form a Great Jock Majority.
And guess what? CEO Speaker’s dream is about to come true! The Washington Redskins, an NFL team known as much for quarterback missteps as a racist name, is building a new stadium and that stadium is going to have surfing as part of it. Let’s read:
Bjarke Ingels has unveiled his firm’s new stadium design for American football team the Washington Redskins, set to feature a moat offering an assortment of sporting activities.
Although a location for the new Redskins stadium complex has not been chosen, BIG has already developed a design, which was unveiled on US television show 60 Minutes yesterday.
A scale model of the proposal shows a bowl-shaped stadium with a wavy outer wall, surrounded by a moat crossed by angular bridges. BIG has also revealed a rendering showing surfers, rollerbladers, kayakers and abseilers.
According to Ingels, the “very practical” design is intended to cater to a wide spectrum of activities before and after football games.
What the hell is an abseiler? But also how thrilled will CEO Speaker be? He can rollerblade next to the wave pool while his favorite sport is being played indoors. Dreams come true. Dreams come true. Yes they do. Dreams come true.

I think by “surfers” they may mean Stand Up Paddleboarders.
Just wondering how kayakers and surfers will coexist with a circular wavepool? Fuck me all this is going to do is add kayakers to the lineup globally. It may even re invent surf skis to the lineup as well to go with SUPs – worst idea ever. Then every surf spot with a cliff we will have abseilers jumping off.
On a brighter note coming from Dutch/ German origins the new fashion trend and the core business will be wearing socks with sandals – I can see some good investment opportunities for the big brands there.
Not sure what the NFL’s current obsession with “XTREME” sports is all about. Take this rendering for a new stadium in San Diego for example.
Lets break this down.
In the foreground we have a guy in a jersey penis pushing his way to the 50 yardline.
Above him is some douche who thought it would be a good idea to try to kick flip a longboard off some sort of ledge only to realize that was a terrible idea and try to bail out half way through.
I’ve never been an Algebra whiz but by my calculations, penis pusher douche and kamikaze longboard guy are heading straight for a 3 way collision with white shirt guy who decided to walk on the grass instead of the sidewalk.
The only real winner here is the guy in the white hat who gets to see this shit storm happen from a mildly safe distance.
If we’re being real about this though this scenario would never happen. I dare anyone to try riding a skateboard within a mile of a stadium. These gents would be instantly tackled, tased and or shot dead on site.
They want to reach surfing’s 1.5 billion strong audience!
That ginger headed mother fucker Roger Goodell and his Mickey Mouse league will always be the WSL’s redheaded stepchild.
Hail to the Redskins!
All the lifeguards are to be genetic clones of the greatest surfer, athlete and motivational icon of all time—Laird Hamilton. As will the hotdog vendors, valet attendants, and rollerblade repair technicians. It is a perfect vision, I don’t see what could possibly go wrong with a football stadium surrounded by a moat of California.
All Laird™ all the time??? I am so IN!!!!
The best idea since….ever!
Now we can enjoy best of both world
My wife just said no way I could top this! She ask’s”Why? Why would he be wearing a wetsuit and rollerblading! Why?” His balls have to be melted! I can’t see him making it…” This guy is serious, a quad set up and four wheel blades. Show of hands beachgrit consumer’s who inline skate.
The Prodigy will play at the Ribbon-cutting.
Rollerblading? Are we in the ’90s? Is this in Germany?
It is designed by a Dutch firm so yes!
Ausgezeichnet!
Dave Wasselhoff will be the real MVP.
In some of my recent travels I’ve noticed somewhat of a resurgence in rollerblading. Not idiots jumping down big hand rails but foriegn exchange students getting from point A to B and middle aged housewives “exercising”. Odd.
The foreign exchange crew tends to favor longboard skateboards and Cleveland Indians baseball hats around here (Major League had overseas cred?). In flip-flops, of course.
Wild Thing has cred wherever he goes.
Unless it’s an Indian reservation.
You mispelled it…it’s C-A-S-I-N-O.
He’s apparently very, very popular among the sons and daughters of the People’s Republic.
