The surf wasn’t pretty but who needs pretty when you’ve got Adriano de Souza! The working man’s hero scrapped through emotion, through bad winds, through Mason Ho and, minutes ago, was crowned your World Surf League champion du monde!
Just last week I wrote:
There are many scenarios, still, but if I am really going to look in the mirror and be honest with myself, I must say, “I’m an Adriano de Souza man!” The little bee slaves away in all waves while people at home say he has a “poo stance™.” But he closes his ears to their caws, shows up to work and does work. He is the professional surfer construction workers from New Jersey can get behind (plus he wears a delightful gold chain over his hairy chest in WSL profile pic). He is a people’s champ.
And also that his title would usher in a new era of world peace.
We’ll have to wait for that to unfold but, for now, the North Shore is awash in a sea of green and gold. If not peace then we will at least have progress and order.

I watched this live today , and yeah the surf didn’t co-operate , but theres now a week of tiny ENE swell , so today or cancel, Adrianos speech and how he won , he was the man this contest , and he deservedly won the world title.Just goes to prove really hard work great heat management , will beat incredible talent that just sits and waits for 10 , well done ADs you are a deserving world Champ!!

Josh Kerr could have handed Mick the title like he did for Parko, and progressed further himself, but he let ADS have that last wave in the final minutes.
And blew that last wave something shocking.

Congrats to ADS. However, I just don’t see how Gabby’s 6.50 air at Pipe was a higher score Kelly’s 4.17 air to combo at Trestles. Firstly… It’s Pipe! And secondly why is one any more incomplete than the other, both were just huck and hope and both were landed with equal amounts of control. Judging surfing makes no sense.
it’s simple. gabriel stayed on his feet, even if it took some time for him to recover from the landing. kelly didn’t. surfing is a stand-up sport.

Sorry I am going to sit out this celebration. Kudos to him, but I am far from stoked!

The problem is the WSL being held for ransom by the local Hawaiian mafia. They wasted 1 crucial day of the waiting period with the ridiculous trials. If the contest ended yesterday, we would all be satisfied with the outcome. The Hawaiian mafia do not seem to realise they need the WSL more than the WSL needs them. The WSL comps pump so much $$$ into the local economy. While we all love Pipe & respect Hawaii as the birthplace of surfing, there are so many new surf breaks discovered since the IPS/Hawaii conflict in the early 80s. Why Pipe (with a required trials & 8 hour surf day) when there is Chopes, Cloudbreak, G-Land and numerous other breaks that can compensate? Respect is a two-way deal. If the local mafia keep creating obstacles to an optimal outcome then leave Hawaii is my opinion. Then real Hawaiians may come to the party, with mutual respect & aloha (rather than the local mafia that include Jews from Pennsylvania).

Sick but unnecessary. Simply hold it out of the contest period or use another contest, such as the Volcom Pro, as the official qualifier. In recent years, the surf has been struggling in Hawaii & the official waiting periods have been inadequate. I could not believe, today, I spent my morning, from 4am, watching slop.

I believe Fast Eddie is from Texas. Either way…Matt Warshaw said yesterday to cut the bottom third of the field and eliminate the no loser round. I agree except for Round 4 because, historically, you get some damn good match ups (see JJF, Kelly, Mick as exhibit one). You also said that the Volcom Pipe Pro should be the trials and I agree with that because if you look at the Quarters of the 2015 comp it’s mostly Hawaiians.

How do you say “you can script that” in Portuguese? Because it certainty fucking seems like they scripted it to me. Where’s pro surfing’s bigger audience, Australia or Brazil? That is with no hate towards ADS, he’s such a good role model and a champ. Do you think 2 foot slop and head-dips is a Pipe contest? Do you think wasting the biggest day of the waiting period running trials for old Hawaiians like Sunny Garcia is a Pipe contest? The contest today was the worst ever therefore it was impossible for the judges to deny Medina the score because his rotator was freaking amazing! Medina combo-ed the judges & rewrote the WSL script.
Kelly’s air at Trestles was “Amazing” but still a 4. Neither was landed. I don’t see how Gabby’s was more amazing or more complete… plus it was at pipe when Mick got a 7 for a good barrel in the same heat.
Why must you slander a perfectly nice man by associating him with the state of New Jersey???
