"I saw the shark breeching out of the water with him in its mouth!"
Lewis Samuels is what you’d call a soul surfer if that term hadn’t been so corrupted. Lew surfs lonely big waves in the sharkiest of northern Californian waters and he ain’t afraid of either.
Lew has five pals who’ve been attacked by great white sharks. One, Royce Fraley, has been attacked… twice.
Lew was there for one of ’em.
“We were really far out to sea, literally, about a kilometre out to sea. It took 45 minutes to paddle out,” says Lew. “Out of the corner of my eye there was this explosion. And as I turned around, I saw the shark breeching out of the water with him in its mouth. Then they fell down in an explosion of whitewater, like when a whale breaches. Fifteen feet is as big as a car and they’re a lot fatter in person than you’d think they would be. And he was in the fish’s mouth and there was this fucking impact in the water and then there was nothing there, gone, like a fucking whirlpool of displaced whitewater where he’d been. There was no one else near him, just another friend way up the line, and so when the attack happened, what are you fucking going to do? You’re not going to leave your friend out there.”
But, says, Lew, “Let me be fucking honest. My first fucking response was to paddle away. But I thought about it, he was my friend, and whether or not he comes up he needs my help. And so I paddled back over, got there and he popped up out of the water and he pretty much paddled up onto my back, literally, trying to get out of the water. I said, ‘It’s alright, man! Hold on! I’ll paddle you in, man!”
What does a shark attack victim look like? “I didn’t want to look. We were 45 minutes out to sea and I figured he’d have a leg missing. I had this 200 pound guy on my back but… he fucking seemed okay. We started paddling next to each other. A friend, Britt, a lifeguard, saw what happened from a distance and started paddling with us, checking him, and he goes, ‘Where’s he fucking hurt?’ It didn’t make sense. Finally, we got in, I ran to a pay phone a mile away ’cause there’s no cell phone service and when I got back down there he was with an ambulance.”
The injuries, says Lew, were “like little scratches. The whole attack was a like a cartoon, like a toothpick in a dog. The board had gotten stuck in the mouth of the shark and it didn’t clamp on him. He was holding onto the board as the shark took him under and he got the scratches when he bounced off the shark.”
Lew says he finds comfort in the fact that great whites in northern California are different to the more energetic South African and Australian breed. In that, they have a different hunting pattern. They might bite but they’ll let go after the initial bleed and wait for you to bleed out instead of taking you down straight away.
“That gives you time to get medical help,” says Lew.
How did the attack affect Lew? Did he surf the spot again?
“What are you going to do? I was out there the next day. The waves were good.”
Damn!
This is NOT what happened. Knowing Royce personally I can tell you that Lewis Samuels account here in this interview/story is utter bullshit. The fallout, because Samuels has now defined himself as a bonafide liar and kook, it can now be guaranteed that will be dropped in on in when attempting to surf said spot.
How about you tell us the truth then big fella, I’m assuming you where there?
As a matter of fact I was.
So maybe tell us what really went down then…
Do some research and you can get the full, accurate story. The SF Gate and Shark Research Committee. Oh, and try not calling someone, “big fella.” It makes you come off as an ass-hole. You can get more favorable results by just being nice.
Big fella is a friendly term of endearment in this part of the World.
Calling someone else a coward, kook and a liar without offering a faction of the details other than “do some research” could in some circles be called a Arse hole themselves. Who is the arsehole is besides the point. I’m just chasing your story.
I now understand your username…negatron
yup, you’re just another troll.
You sound a little disgruntled, Was it you that wrote to Chas?

Nph on the MPH?
Too bad it didn’t bite you Lewis… then you could have capitalized on the story even more. Unlike your “friend” Royce who fully understands the code of the North Coast and kept his mouth shut about it, didn’t do TV interviews for every new channel and kept on surfing… with his mouth shut. And if it took you 45 min. to paddle out there you need to get in better shape… maybe try a bigger board ya kook.
he didn’t even name the spot?
Lewis cops shit because he created an internet cult of personality while claiming parentage along a vast stretch of coast that he oft mentioned in print. He is NorCal’s Chas Smith, if Chas Smith surfed better and more often. The literate love him, the limey local, not so much.
Literate?
In surfing, that means completion of year 8.
By naming the guy who was bit he’s naming the spot. Any idiot with a computer and a spare 10 min. could figure out where it happened. And this is why surf journalists are a cancer. They have no ethics. The guys name was irrelevant to the story.
!!
Wouldn’t it be dreamy if the surfer code that you cite even loosely resembled the codes of truly hardened criminals…kill those that don’t pay, kill those that pay late, kill those that talk, never snitch, kill those that snitch, never cooperate with the po-lice, kill those that cooperate with the po-lice, etc.?
Imagine, we might even be able to muster a “surfers’ lives matter” movement from the residual policing side effects of such a code!
why would you want to keep that a secret? I’d think it’s exactly the sort of story you’d want out there.
In true Miki style you should be encouraging people to report fake attacks to reduce crowd, whilst fucking up the USA Tourism Industry for those areas.
My favorite people are the ones who convince themselves that they’re safe surfing inside the kelp line or close to shore when sharks have been sighted a half mile away. This is the case in Santa Cruz (and most other Central and Northern CA) breaks everyday. That kelp is totally keeping you safe, bro!
omg
Further cementing Lewis Samuels as a fuckin legend in my books. More!
Further cementing sharks as fun too.
A legend? The lights can’t stop blinking on the lie detector machine. Hopefully you would like to pick your legends carefully instead of basing it off of someone who is using the story to promote himself when in fact he was a fucking coward during the incident.
Relax. I don’t really care either way. I like his writing and opinion on professional surfing. I liked the shark story. I’ll listen to your stories too. But you have to tell the story before I can.
Do you know the story? Do tell. I know Lewis, have stared awestruck at the small man’s courage and seasoned talent in very, very large waves, and consider him cut from strong cloth. I don’t doubt the man’s tale, have heard him tell it the same a few times over, most recently when Julian Wilson was called a hero for paddling to Mick’s rescue, which Lewis found preposterous: any friend would have done the same. Would you tuck tail on a pal?
I know the story better than any person on the planet, believe what you want. Samuels is a flat out liar. Sorry to burst your bubble. Just because someone can ride big waves doesn’t mean they are free from being a douchebag. You’ve heard the story over and over so does that mean it’s true? Try googling the story from some other sources and see for yourself. Lewis’s small stature speaks for itself…a small man complex that he’s trying to compensate for by being some shark hero? What a joke.
So was it you that wrote to Chas?
I’m all up for discovery and the thrill of waves to myself but paddling out a kilometre in the sharks house just terrifies me.

I prefer lineups that are borderline shorebreak
Who would have thought that California great whites are more mellow than ozzy or South African whites?
Might have something to do with the benzodiazepines seeping out through the effluent system.
Nah, just passive aggressive.
