Do you grind the nine to five? Are you happy?
Went to Mexico today.
It’s exactly fifty-three minutes from my Welcome mat to the sand of Baja’s most consistent beachbreak. That’s if you don’t have to sneak into a Mexican alleyway to take a shit into a plastic bag first. So today it was closer to an hour.
The best thing about Mexico is not the waves (though they are great), nor the food (though it is best), but the fact that I learn something every time I go. This time I learned that I don’t want to work for a living — or at least not the average joe’s version of “working”.
Here’s how. And why.
I rode down with my friend Jeff. He turned his devotion to the environment into a lucrative profession, one that has him chasing honey-holes around San Diego county. And when he’s not getting barreled, he’s a bee removal expert! Specializing in safely extracting whole hives from private residences and transporting them to a bee conservation station.
“Spring and summer are really buzzy for me,” Jeff explained, “but the bees pretty much go dormant in the winter, which leaves me free to surf!” And so Jeff goes to Mexico on Wednesday mornings.
Oh, and did I mention that’s technically work too?
Because in his free time Jeff likes to tinker with cars and GoPros and shit. And one day he invented the MyGoMount GoPro mouth mount, the one with the clever respiration channel, the one that Anthony Walsh uses. In an effort to continually improve his product, Jeff puts in a lot of “R&D” time. Racing and Driving. He gets tubed and then indirectly paid for it.
And I am jealous.
Right now I have no real occupation because I got fired or laid off or whatever. I had what many would call a “dream job” – working for the illustrious Surfing Magazine as a writer/web editor.
Would I have picked any job over it? Never. Was I happy there? I don’t think so.
And that’s crazy! Because in terms of a nine-to-five, there’s literally nothing I am more qualified (which speaks to my lack of practical knowledge and skills rather than any particular talent in this field) or willing to do. Every time I found myself bored or annoyed by the trivial task at hand, I’d tell myself that not only could it be worse, but it theoretically couldn’t be better. And that’s a little depressing.
But then I was let go and within four hours I was genuinely happy about it.
I learned that I’m even lazier and more self-absorbed than previously thought. Any sane person would opt out of nine-to-five employment if it were that easy, and to think that I am somehow special enough to avoid it altogether would be a negative representation of myself, but also not untrue.
Freed from the shackles of a half-year job that had me deskside for the better portion of daylight, I began counting the trips I would take, the waves I would catch, the dog I would spend my whole days with in this liberated state. Life becomes significantly more bearable when you remove the impermeable prism of schedule, simply by the fact that spontaneity breeds positivity. The prospect of something awesome happening at any given moment is truly alluring. And there’s nothing more joyful than dropping everything for the evening glass-off.

So I’m gonna ride this chowder train until it runs out. If I discover a way to financially support my personal brand of egotism and aloofness, awesome. If not, I’ll hop back on the wage-worker wagon and die the same slow, painful death as many of you.
But I’m definitely never doing manual labor. Those fuckers die fast.
Wow what a condescending article, those fuckers die fast? Nothing wrong with being lazy, even better when you can admit it. Sounds like working isn’t for you, best case scenario find yourself some rich bitch, but dont be insulting people who do manual labor that’s just fucked.
If it weren’t for those of us working 9 to 5 BG would likely have ceased operations last year. Who else do you think has time to fuck off during the day to read and comment on these stories? It’s also the reason I love The Tour…three full days a month of on-line distraction. And when I’m not traveling I work from home so you assholes make up a large percentage of my “human” interaction during the day. God help me…
Worst job I ever had: Asshole stuck in a giant animal suit waving at kids. Hot days, little ventilation, suit was perpetually moist and never washed.
Oh, I had a job like this too! Was awesome. I miss that t-rex burgers suit. The pee smell. The mayonnaise stains. The polyester itch. The hole where my toe stuck out thereby belying the fact I wasn’t a real t-rex. so. many. memories.
Mate can I tell ya, if you are going to do anything worth a hill of beans with your abilities, whatever they may be, it’s going to destroy whatever idea you currently have about “schedules”. Quality and substance comes at a price and the price is your time, and that time isn’t nine to five.
luckily I’m nowhere near a point in my writing where that’s a viable concern!
well then get back to fucken work.
writing should not be thought of as a viable career. if you fall into that position, that’s extraordinary. but my god, it’s not a thing to be pursued.
Im not interested in reading your diary entries. Stop writing about yourself..PLEASE!
Here is a link to a damn good read Nick Dee! https://interc.pt/2izO8D3
“But I’m never doing manual labor. Those fuckers die fast.”
Those “fuckers “sit at the border for 4 hours a day come trim the hedge around your welcome mat so that when you take a Instagram picture of your privledged set up, the bushes look a trim as the landing strip above your cooch.
oh, full respect. Fuckers was a term of endearment.
Didn’t come across that way at all. Pretentious and narrow minded prose.
I thought it was pretty funny, but then I’m pretentious and narrow minded.
Actually, if you are hiring legal American workers, those fuckers are
richer than Ciaramella will ever be. Damn, I should have been a licensed plumber or a roofer. Mexicans, illegal ones anyway, alas, are a reasonably priced manual labor resource soon to be in short supply. Get your construction done while you can boys.
welcome to the world Michael
Everyone’s different, if that’s what’s working for you cool. Unless you know the reason of your existence or purpose, there is no right or wrong way to live.
As for laziness, everything is always in motion and you are always doing something, it’s only a waste if you are doing something you know you shouldnt be. Therefore you know in your subconscious, acts you deem lazy are a waste of “your” time, not everyone else’s, but yours.
For example I just “wasted” 5 minutes writing this shit and another 5 reading your article… But what, we all make mistakes right..
I have spent a good portion of the past few years “between jobs”, great when its pumping, not so great when howling onshore. Finally got a boring, stable job, but I’m not complaining, at all… If you live somewhere wave rich you’ll get waves, even if you are poor, or time poor, live somewhere a distance from good surf just forget about surfing, it will only taunt you and make you miserable!
Slow Death is a great headline for this one. It perfectly captures the reader’s state of mind after reading it.
Na na 9-5 is great haven’t thought of suicide much at all!
Tomorrow I leave my job for 2 months in Bondi (wish me luck) then NZ, then USA all because it was literally killing me man. This lemming life aint for me!
You will love it mate! Have a great time
Why are you being nice? You really are losing it, Wiggolly!
Next time save the plastic bag and shit on the ground.
Chicks dig unemployed drifters.
Too bad this kind of sucking doesn’t pay in 20’s.
“Life becomes significantly more bearable when you remove the impermeable prism of schedule, simply by the fact that spontaneity breeds positivity.”
This is true for maybe 0.0001% of the population.
the 9 to 5 “hurts” surfers more than the enthusiasts of most activities. most people love the stability that comes with knowing exactly what you’re going to take home each year, awful hard to plan for a mortgage without it, but the average working stiff isn’t checking the cams going “faaack!” on a tuesday morning because there really isn’t anything he’s missing. he’s just waiting for Sunday to see if he won his fantasy league game or not.
Some people in my office can’t wait for Thursday evening indoor soccer. It’s the highlight of their week. So many people are just hanging by a thread. Beyond blue. Push them over the edge.
I love that in this forum you’re either a surfer with no job, or literally chained to your desk 9-5. There are whole entire lives worth living, many that are far, far richer than being a surfer, that involve office jobs and pursuits other than surfing.
really? like flipping houses or working with Habitat for Humanity or something? Banksy is kind of killing it I guess.
