Let this firecracker blow your mind!
Are you ever surprised by how well someone surfs? Like when the 50-year-old dreadhead does a mean layback, or the 13-year-old girl does a serious lipper, or Adriano stomps another wide-kneed rotation? Same same.
My most recent case of astonishment was delivered in the form of a Peruvian man, Martin Jeri. His clip starts with a profound quote, which goes exactly like this: “The ocean has taught me that, no matter how sketchy the surface is, we have to be calm like under the sea.” I think that’s nice.
The Martin goes fuckin’ loony! The biggest elevator drop I’ve seen by a backsider at Backdoor, followed by some oversized right where he survives a brutal drumming from the foam, and then a flurry of small wave magic. Of course he’s not the only guy to excel in all facets of the sport, but… he just doesn’t look like he should be that good!
Because his stance is boxy and style is strange and, I don’t know… it just doesn’t add up. Then he again he’s sponsored by Hurley and lands several impressive airs and one especially good turn (2:18), so I guess my judgement is way off. Good on ya Martin, keep ripping.
P.S. Gritters, who is the most underrated shredder you know?

Lots of big-wave, deep water point breaks in Peru. That boxy wide-stance may be what’s required to handle dropping in the face of large waves when Punta Rocas or Pico Alto are pumping.
Martin Jerí is only a no-namer if you’ve never surfed in Peru or don’t know the Peruvian big wave guys who travel. He’s basically part of a three-plus generation legacy surf family and he’s been surfing big Pico Alto and good-sized Puerto since he was a pre-teen.
Also smokes more weed than all of us commenters combined and has a reading level slightly beyond Clay Marzo’s. His sister is hot, his dad makes better-than-average (if overpriced) surfboards and gets all the best waves at La Herradura.
Basically the Jerí family is an answer to the following question: what if Sterling Spencer’s family was of aristocratic ancestry instead of KKK ancestry, had way more big wave game, weren’t Jesus freaks, and traveled somewhere other than Central America to surf internationally?
That’s a very complicated question
I traffic often in complexity, if rarely in sophistication.
The Spencers are/were KKKers? HA. I mean, not surprising because FLORIDA, but again, HA.
Panhandlers…
“Martin Jerí is only a no-namer if you’ve never surfed in Peru or don’t know the Peruvian big wave guys who travel.”
So you’re agreeing he’s a no-namer!
Kid has clips at every marquis big wave in the world and airs that rival most. He’s somebody, you just don’t get out enough.
The best thing that comes from Peru is lomo saltado . . . oh, and they have good cotton.
You’re forgetting the obvious: an unparalleled enthusiasm for the ISA World Surfing Games. #cocaine
haha, in all seriousness, Peru has a lot of amazing surfers and they are generally pretty nice (at least to respectful Hawaiian surfers). It’s a pretty cool country with a rich history of surfing (not including the caballito de tatoro, which isnt surfing and is at best kayak surfing, ie, kinda lame but better than nothing). this is my first time visiting BG on my computer and not my phone; the “moderator” label doesnt appear on my phone. i just thought that you were a super informed commentator. cool.
The irony is that I have no sense of moderation in anything but #cocaine.
The most underrated surfer is the one having the least fun!

Amazing. The only shredder worth knowing.
