What happens when advertisers realise the audience actually consists of, say, Russian bots, or a family in the central Mongolian highlands that will never see the ocean in their life?
Did you, like me, drop your monocle in your martini when the WSL casually claimed in its recent IKEA missive that there are 40 million surfers in the world, with another 370 million ‘interested’ in our sport?
It’s a bold call that seems to be as ambitious as it is unsubstantiated. Three hundred and seventy million people interested in surfing across globe?
Where did that number come from?
Now.
I love hyperbole as much as the next fake internet persona.
But one only has to turn to the daily papers here in Australia to learn of the dangers inherent in duking the stats.
Cricket (national sport of Oz, England, India, Pakistan; like baseball on heroin) found itself in hot water recently when the governing body, Cricketing Australia, was caught out lying about the sport’s national participation numbers… by a cool couple hundred thousand.
Centrist rag The Sydney Morning Herald revealed CA’s claim that 1.65 million Australians play the sport was a “significant overstatement… (that has) been inflated for several years” and is based on nothing more than a “guessing game” on their behalf.
‘Cricket has already been struggling to maintain sponsorship levels and questions over the claim of “1.65 million Australians” could further diminish Cricket Australia’s credibility.’
In terms of scandals for that particular sport, it’s not quite as salacious as the underarm bowling incident of ‘81 that almost sparked a trans-Tasman war between Australia and New Zealand, or the time Australian Test player David Boon drank 52 beers on a single flight from Sydney to London.
But it does serve as a warning to Santa Monica’s high tower.
What happens when the advertisers realise the audience actually consists of, say, Russian bots, or a family in the central Mongolian highlands that will never see the ocean in their life?
So just how many surfers are there in the world?
The ISA puts the number at 23 million, but as Matt Warshaw has already pointed out, it’s all guesswork at best. Counting leaves in a wind tunnel.
Nick Carroll said in the comments the other day that surfers have always made an art form of scamming money from the corporate world.
Is this the Woz sticking to this time-honoured tradition?
Or do they have a peer-reviewed, scientifically-rigorous data set they just haven’t shared with the rest of us yet?
Over to you, E-Lo.
So there’s 39,990,000 surfers not watching wsl comps! You know E-Lo, it might be an interesting exercise to find out why the fuck they’re not!
I think they are including everyone who’s bought a surf-branded t-shirt or a pair of board shorts. Or flip flops.
Now I don`t now what kind of Pan-Pacific bullshit power play this fuckface Ziff is trying to pull here with these numbers but Asia is my territory, and I tell you right now for these numbers to be even close to reality you`d need millions of Charlie surfers and we all know Charlie don`t surf in those numbers!
Thanks for including me in the count WSL. Unfortunately I’ve gone off pro surfing again. I enjoyed Bells and the Margaret River Pro this year. Then, that was it. On the upside for you it was the first time since Glyndon Ringrose had a crack at the tour 20 years ago that I’ve taken an interest.
In 2015 there were 400,000 surfboards sold according to the ventura county star. 40 million assumes the surf poulation has grown 100x if every surfer bought one new surfboard.
There’s a lot more surfers in 2019 but maybe 100x is overcooked. Im all for screwing giant capitalists though so here’s to 40 mil!
Boonie got stuck into the heavies like a true legend.
And wet himself and the next seat
Classy!
…like a true legend.
The NFL doesn’t even have an audience of 410 million. There may be a 1/2 billion fans who would watch a child-athlete play a video game like Fortnite. Asteroids Deluxe has a better future for sports-advertising than the Huntington hop ever will.
surfing is dangerous. its not worth the risk. stick to fixie rides to the coffee shop.

Ouch . Certainly would have given the nasal and anal passages a thorough rinsing with the old saline solution not to mention Bruce Iron’s loosing his shorts on the wipeout at Chopes and then being paraded around the line up on the back of Koby Abberton’s Jetski butt naked .
I think surf participation numbers are in decline globally, with perhaps Europe being the exception. Generally SUP boarding probably out number surfers…I prefer kayaking myself!
“I prefer kayaking myself!”
Jeez, you breezed right on by the notion of standing in the living room wanking to the golf channel and ended up there, eh?
Man I’ve been round this block a few times.
Did an average count for each of Sydney’s 40 beaches based on the supposed number of surfers in Australia according to the various authorities, and came up with a figure of over 16,000. PER BEACH.
Yes OK.
Australian Bureau of Statistics reckons not even that many Australians go to the beach every year, much less actively surf.
Rough figures, the global surfboard market right now, about 2.5 million p.a., that includes EVERYTHING, soft boards, bodyboards, custom, Chinese knockoffs, the lot (other than SUP which is surprisingly small and seems to be shrinking). How do 40 million surfers get along with 2 million boards?
I quizzed an insider at the ISA on this once, he said their (then figure of 35 million) includes anyone sort of a bit connected with surfing in some way, like they have a family member who surfs, or have seen people surfing and felt vaguely interested in it.
It’s complete bullshit. But really, who cares?
WSL’s new slogan! “It’s complete bullshit. But really, who cares?” #drinkmichelobpiss
Yeah I knew you’d done some crunching on this but couldn’t find the article. ISA also counts an active surfer as somebody who surfs at least once a year or more. Right.
How did the race go?!
Great! see comments on that story
I am of the belief that raw numbers in surfing are red herrings and that what really counts is passion. A few years ago (I think 2016) the WSL got about 3.5mill separate humans to watch an event at some point during the year. If even one tenth of those people have the fire in them for real about surfing, that’s some deal. If half of them do, that’s a base. Surfing’s never gonna fire up hundreds of millions of people the way football and baseball etc team sports can. But it has different strengths. Radical idea: the fact that nobody quite understands it is a strength.
Across the pond, on a good swell (2 dozen days a year) coinciding with a weekend, Rincon will have maybe 200 guys out. Yes, horrific, but the rest of my town may have 20 more spread around the B and C breaks total. Malibu looks worse on first sight, but with Kiddie Bowl and Third Point dying in ’83, you really only have the chaos at First point to count…. let’s just say 100. Ok, in LA county on that same day, County Line has another 75 surfers, Leo maybe 40…. you get my drift. Suffocating to join the fun, but not enough for TV rights interest.
Populations from LA county south to the Mex border are the most concentrated… anything north of Rincon is empty by comparison. I don’t know, but my gut feeling is well less than a million even though it seems crowded everywhere down there. It’s just hard to add hundreds to hundreds at the most crowded spots and imagine 7 figures lurking in the shadows.
Here’s the real equation…. How many of these people even are aware of the WSL? I’ve stated before, I know very talented, well traveled surfers who have no knowledge of the WSL beyond Kelly and oh, they know Laird’s name.
The WSL/ASP/ISP have always taken the natural audience for granted hunting for the mythical big fish that most assume does not exist including Surfads. Nice story btw.
The pools will not change that, try as they may.
Disagree about the pools. Love ’em or hate ’em (I’m agnostic) I think they will be game changers for the WSL or whatever league exists in 10 years. I can see a tour with 14 stops at different pools, and maybe a couple of natural events (Pipe for sure) just to keep it somewhat real. Lack of swell, bad conditions, wrong tides (the bane of all of us) together dooms the growth of surfing. 10 min. lulls are unwatchable to the casual viewer. Guaranteed waves with barrels and air sections on demand are the future.
Agree, but the WSL usages relate to active surfers, not farmers in Iowa curious.
Media Buyers might care.
Nick carrol likes to hear his own opinions, right there nobody cares
The worldwide audience is larger than the size of your comment board?
Not a scandal by any measure, but one hell of a great story.
If you asked former pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates Dock Ellis how he’d describe the game of Cricket relative to baseball, he’d say its probably more like baseball on LSD*

* It was right on his paycheck too. “Pay To … Ellis, D.”
‘The (WSL) has already been struggling to maintain sponsorship levels and questions over the claim of “40 million” could further diminish the (WSL’s) credibility.’
Credibility from the group that named a non surfer waterman of the year?
And you havent let em forget that have ya!

Nick Carroll said he’s got the inside scoop on Samsung backing out… Would like to hear that one!
Early 2000s a mate was looking after Surfing in NSW and the Big Sport which had everyone by the short and curlies ,with ,if memory serves me correctly ,about 800,000 members , was WOMEN’s NETBALL ….

Every night after work he would leave the Maroubra HQ and read the the local Bra Boys a Bed Time Story …. ?

Don’t cut it.
Maroubra was my local for my year in the lucky country, got to see a knife fight in the car park among other interesting stuff.
I hope you had great time and got a wave to yourself ? A mate lived there for a while and got dropped in on every wave for 6 months until they took him in …. The only time I went there to surf was in contests ( relatively safe … ) except for one time with Dog Marsh , he needed a lift and I had a car , and a kid , about 12 , came up to us in the car park and said “ Your Dog aren’t you “ , Dog replied “ Yep , that’s me “ and the Kid said “ You’re not from here , SO FUCK OFF ! “ As he should !
Had a great time, it was not that bad when I was there (early 90’s) had a local bud and knew who to stay away from and mind ones manners
Mundus, the local bud in the early 90’s was shit compared to the strains we grow now. Lemon kush, supa skunk, gorilla gold. We got it. Bring cash.
