So I’m still jet lagged and maybe not in the best state of mind but I swear I just saw an Instagram video of professional surfer John John Florence back in the ocean, training for the Olympics.

He’s totally in the water training for the Olympics even though he just blew out his knee, ending his 2019 World Surf League campaign that he was absolutely crushing and it might be for Olympic paddleboarding but we’ll have to wait until Nick Carroll wakes up in Australia to be sure.
In either case, why’s he doing that?
Does he really want a gold medal to compliment his brass World Surf League cups?
Does he truly want to etch his names in the competitive anals by being the first surfer in history to win a gold medal?
I mean annals.
I suppose so and if John John is starting right now with his training for those 2020 Olympics then the Olympic committee should just etch his name in that gold medal right now because no one else has a chance and this whole charade becomes a race for silver.
So who wins silver?

Schools are rough , food kind of pricey and locals will check you up big time but……. the surf. Especially those medium 5’ to 7’ days with light southeast winds. Heaven
Hawaii is killer especially Oahu. So much surf year round and if you are on it at dawn and watch buoys/forecasts etc AND aren’t afraid to charge a little you will be in heaven.
And a good economy to boot. No brainer
My current favorite boondoggle is the light rail. Billions over budget and it doesn’t even go anywhere…

I would imagine that Pro Surfing is hoping that one of its blazing stars wins Olympic Gold to make it Relevant … ? If we go back to the World Surfing Championships in 60s and see the impact that Midget’s win In 64 had , announcing Australian Surfing becoming a legitimate threat or Nat’s Win on Sam in 66 which lead to great changes in board design and the way people surfed , the wins by Fred Hemmings in 68 and Rolf Aurness in 70 , both great surfers , but perhaps not the torch bearers of innovation and progression at the time , seemed to have had much less influence on the future of surfing …. ?

Us lazy Hawaiians have developed so many linguistic shortcuts like Wa`a for Waka and other tricks using the same Maori/Poly words but shortened with some letters dropped. I think you guys use Kauri, Totara and Rimu for Wa`a building ? Anyway cheers ……
That’s a difficult subject to broach mate. There are close parallels in the present day movements of Hawaiian kanaka maoli with save Mauna A Wakea and our cuzzies in Aotearoa with what’s happening now at Ihumātao. These two ongoing present day protest movements are emblematic of a larger and long-standing deeper problem of a type of unwitting cultural genocide.
To be clear, it’s not really a clash between pakeha or haole occupations with racist undertones but more of the attempt to recapture our unique culture in dire risk of disappearing altogether. Land and language are at the heart of the preservation but the dispossession and loss of our cultural anchors are really a result of monied occupation under the ideologies of a capitalist framework and not because of skin color or purposeful colonialism.
Back to your question, yeah the neighbor isles are also crammed with Maui being the worst. Kauai locals have made militant efforts to stem the tourist influx. O`ahu, despite being the most populated, still has vast beauty and choke waves. The problem lies in Hawaiians being forced to move away, leaving Hawai`i owned, outbid and occupied in the hands of rich mainlanders and others. As we say, we love to hate tourists but we’re joking. We welcome the diverse and interesting people who visit here on vacay and have a bit of respectful fun. We have another saying: welcome to Hawaii, just don’t forget to go home.
The Islanders of Corsica have the same approach . Come spend and play but don’t try to buy , own and stay .

There’s is no place to rent anymore and rice and ramen is considered splurging. It’s a billionaires’ refuge and otherwise mostly just a tourist trap. Locals are increasingly being dispossessed and more Hawaiians now live out of state than here at home.
