The world’s oceans are dying, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but according to many recent headlines from many reputable news sources it’s true. Dying due an excess of carbon dioxide from, I think, climate change killing corals, killing fishes, killing… the ocean which means killing waves. Killing us.
And such a bummer, certainly, but we’re oldish and will certainly have a few more years of wild surfing climate change.
No?
Yes.
But the children.
Our children suffer.
Suffer a surf-less future. A dead ocean. Disease. Rabies.
But what can we do?
What can mere surfers do?
Oh.
Everything.
We’re surfers, drop that damed “mere” after all, and know deep truths. Know, for instance, the power of shame and that’s what the Save the Ocean debate needs right now. A hefty wooden spoonful of shame. Nixon also knew how to do it. How to make and keep a book of enemies.

Excellent Chas. I wasn’t sure when first watching the video but quickly saw what you were up to. I approve. And you know, something like 90% of all trash\plastic (not including the good micro plastic) in the ocean comes form SE Asia and Africa. Uh oh….not PC to say that. Oh and also, we know natural process’ like water vapor make up the vast majority of CO2, but when it comes to mans contribution (admittedly very small) China and India alone account for like half of it. Maybe NATO or a UN force should invade those two countries for crimes against mother earth. It would of course be for the children and Greta. Greta could be the commander of the UN forces. Then emperor…lord emperor Greta the wise and just and green.

Chas, that video you made was pretty funny. Maybe Dirk Ziff and Sofie are enemies of the ocean as well with the WSL backing of this floodplain surfpark in Australia. Me and you are very different people, but I do get a kick out of reading your humor, and the stuff on beach grit. It’s kept me coming back since shortly after the site started. A filthy habit I sometimes wish I could quit. Almost like that line from the famous movie, Broke Back Mountain – “I wish I could quit you.” You might be mad at me for those things I said about you in the past, and I understand that. Keep up the good work.

Trump, Murdoch and CoMo are very powerful leaders in a time when the world has woken up to the affects of climate change. They know better and should be doing better. You can get voted in and you can get voted out – the conservative voice is very powerful at the moment, yes I agree, but they’re not invincible.

It is pretty clear that 20% of the population are never going to change their opinion and will try to throw a spanner in the works of any meaningful change. 80% of the Australian population have some concern – you never know maybe more after the smoke over Sydney and fear that burning rainforest is the new normal.
Personally, I hope you are right and we can all go phew lucky that climate change shit and carbon in the air and acidification of the oceans was a load of shit. Who would have thought all those developers and the fossil fuel industry along with our religious conservative leaders were correct! Anyway let’s all move on with our lives and stop it with the worry.
