And let us travel to Oceanside, California where an evil surf shop dared to exist in the Time and Coronavirus.

Thankfully, SurfRide was stormed, forcibly shuttered by the Gestapo.

OPD has officially shut us down from doing appointment based shopping. Apparently surf retail isn’t deemed essential, and 1 person in a 10,000 sqf building doesn’t seem to comply with 6’ social distancing. Our appointment based sales weren’t crushing it by any means, but the extra couple dollars it was bringing in helped us cover basic expenses like electricity, Internet, trash (which we couldn’t temporarily cancel because retail wasn’t required to shut down…) and other basics. Along with the sales we were able to provide the community with Birthday Presents, surf Necessities, an escape from being locked up if only for 15mins, and that glorious smell of wax as you walk in the front door.
There’s never been a time when we need the support from our local community now more than ever! I know we don’t have a ton of stuff online yet, but any sales help. The best thing is to purchase a gift card, that way once this is all over you will be able to come load up on all your surf essentials and finally enjoy the ocean once again. #SurfingIsEssential #SurfingIsNotACrime
But surfing is a crime. A crime worse than human smuggling, serial murder and identity theft.

The thing that pisses me off the most about this is that Amazon and the Big Business corporations are “essential” and can stay open while local businesses that support communities get destroyed. Disgusting!

On the flip side, seems pretty likely that SurfRide could shut down with very little negative impact on their business. I believe they own the building, they have likely already laid off all their staff so they can collect unemployment benefits which are likely better than the wages they were getting paid, they can freeze the cable/internet bill and the electric bill will effectively be zero.
If I’m wrong about them owning the building, then its a very different calculation as rent is still due.
And…if they own then what about that thing called a mortgage?
by own I meant free and clear, they’ve been in that building since forever and I believe they built the building. If they have a mortage the bank owns the building.

West Coast Surf shops should coordinate with East Coast shops in a manner that involves interstate commerce. Inventory swaps that are “purchases” requiring shipment across state lines under duly executed contracts. When police step in and shut it down, don’t file an emergency injunction in State court, rather file in Federal district court arguing violation of Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3 of US Constitution (Commerce Clause). That’s what Trump will use to force States to open business because state cannot make law affecting interstate commerce.
