Environmental warrior and billionaire Yvon Chouinard describes Trump administration as "evil".
If you buy a pair of Patagonia’s regenerative, organic stand-up shorts, ninety-nine-ninety-five, you’ll find, embroidered on an inside label, the message, Vote The Assholes Out.
It’s billionaire climber Yvon Chouinard’s hit on any politician that “denies” the climate crisis, not ‘cause they don’t see it happening, but because they’re in the in the pockets of oil and gas companies.
The slogan previously appeared on a t-shirt (buy here) and Chouinard also included the pithy slogan as a postscript to an open letter to 1% for the Planet supporters, a movement created to convince companies to give one percent of sales to environmental tax groups.
“Remember, vote the assholes out — all of those politicians who don’t believe we should do anything about climate change,” Chouinard wrote. “Vote for the planet and against those who would do nothing. We have the power and now is the time to use it.”
Chouinard, who is eighty-two and founded Patagonia in 1973, has form when it comes to putting his considerable fortune where his mouth is.
Patagonia donates 10 percent of profits to various charities, they do this thing on Black Friday where they donate total profits to grassroots environmental organisations (in 2016 it was ten million dollars), used Patagonia gear can be traded-in via their Worn Wear website and, true to its central coast roots, has its office and flagship store in Ventura.
Chouinard describes the current Trump administration as “evil”.
Patagonia, I’ll admit, doesn’t do a hell of a lot for me. The ritual use of dull browns, the lingering smell of piety, the full silhouettes suited to the fashionably retarded.
And, yet, I’ve always found Yvon Chouinard, the climber and surfer who founded Patagonia, deeply interesting.
One of those men whom you would’ve loved as a childhood mentor.

3/. The scientific evidence is clear that the Earth’s climate is warming at a rate that is unprecedented. The overwhelming conclusion is that change is based on the rapid increase in carbon emissions from oil based economies. The basis of that is that historically, when there have been increases in COx2 in the atmosphere the climate ‘warms’. It has happened naturally many times. Not being argued. What is concerning is that we currently have higher concentrations of COx2 in the atmosphere than ever before, and all indications are that will lead to more rapid change in climate than can be dealt with ‘evolutionary’.
Now here’s the thing. Say if the scientists are wrong and climate change/global warming isn’t as catastrophic as currently thought, but we still make cultural changes that result in a cleaner planet. Is that a bad thing?
I mean if you’re right, and we keep going the way we are, we’re fucked either way.

Lots of things cause climate change but all of them – with the exception of occasional meteorite strikes and large volcanic eruptions – are very slow acting. This is borne out in the geological / atmospheric record. None of this historic evidence of climate change is in debate in the scientific community.
So you have to propose a theory of what causes the current change in global climate. We would have noticed the earth’s orbit changing. We would have noticed the continents moving. We would have noticed meteorite impacts and volcanoes going off.
By all means suggest an alternative hypothesis. But remember there’s a difference between being ahead of your time and being a crack pot.

There is no perfect climate. I suspect you know this already.
There is no ‘global temperature’, perfect or otherwise (duh)

Climate does change. You probably learnt this in college, though given the fact you mix up climate with temperature I really wonder if you were paying attention.
At risk of wasting my time, climate does change and is always changing. There, I said it. These changes are caused by different factors known as drivers. The bigger the driver, the bigger the change. For example, the movement of the earth’s plates is very very slow but over geological time, this has completely changed ocean currents. The gulf stream for example. In the cretaceous there were tree ferns and dinosaurs in the south pole. This was because there was a warm current that flowed down the coast of Australia (when it was still joined to Antarctica) and kept the climate there much warmer (it still snowed though). This took 10s of millions of years to occur.
There’s other drivers such as wobble in the earth’s orbit, intensity of the sun, amount of albedo (whiteness due to snow on mountains), CO2 content of the air, volcanic activity, amount of cloud cover and so on (that was not an exhaustive list by the way). All of these drivers are slow. The only fast ones are meteorite impacts but we can kind of rule out ones affecting the global climate because you know… Someone would have noticed.
Volcanoes can affect the climate and for example, Pinatubo in 1991 dropped the world’s average temperature but about 1 degree, for about a year due to fine dust in the air. But Pinatubos aren’t going off every year.
Which leads us to CO2 and GHGs. Amazingly enough we do have records of past CO2 and other GHGs in ice cores.
I’ll let you join the dots. If you want to be disingenuous you can say it’s all just a coincidence I suppose.

California has massive solar farms in the deserts and practically every rooftop along with ground mounts on larger properties these days and its still not enough. Wind farms too. Ever drive to Palm Springs or mountain passes here? This summer has seen rolling blackouts because there simply isn’t enough energy being produced to meet demand. So we end up buying power off the grid from gas powered generation stations like in Rosarito, Baja or Arizona.
So we’re raping the planet building panels, which require massive amounts of gas fuel to produce and have a relatively short lifespan, along with wind farms that permanently alter pristine backcountry and yet we still need fossil fuels for power generation. Not to mention a mess of gigantic transmission lines crisscrossing once untouched habitat.
Check out Planet of Humans documentary produced by Michael Moore, it’ll twist your brain on whether or not we’re going in the right direction. The same multinationals in the oil game are profiteering off “clean” energy. Thorium nuclear plants or, as suggested by an astute BGr here a while back, tidal energy generation might be a better choice? Or we go back to stone age. Im with you 100% about taking care of the planet, but it seems we’re heading diwn the wrong path.

It was 110 degrees out that weekend and we had finally convinced some of our covid paranoid friends to meet at Torrey Pines on Sunday. I literally just filled my Hydroflask with vodka and white claw, sat down and got a text from the kids saying power was out and smoke was billowing over the hills. Did the selfish thing and paddled out for a couple of waves then booked it back home to hassle with generators. The Valley fire did a number on Lawson Valley, Horsethief Canyon, Barrett Lake area. Basically north and due east of my place. It was sketchy the Tuesday after Labor Day because of predicted Santa Ana winds. Never materialized so the fire just burned itself out. I was just in the burn zone today and the past few days in tweak mode getting peoples water back on- pumps, pressure tanks and all the stuff that got fried. Pretty wild couple of weeks!

Patagonia has maybe gotten too big for it’s hundred-dollar britches though.
There was a time when Patagonia was smaller time and their gear was bulletproof.
Buy a Patagonia jacket and it would last for a decade.
Their fly-fishing gear is still probably the best: Wherever you need a pocket, they put a pocket and you’ll still be finding pockets three years later.
But ever since George Stephanopolous was sporting Patagonia live and on camera, the company has expanded faster than the universe, and the quality control has gone down.
And I still can’t believe people pay anything more than $15 for a pair of shorts.
I can remember when Beach Crew (of all brands) brought out this model of shorts called gungaroyds for 30 bucks retail and we thought it would be almost impossible to sell them. Yet out the door they went all summer. That was about 1988.
