End WSL tyranny!
Maurice Cole is one of the grandest of all surfing personalities. Talented, brash, handsome, unafraid especially when the sissification of surfing is in full swing. A rare combination and I truly fell in love when he barked, “Chas, you are a complete and total fuckwit whose opinion is based on other fuckwit’s stories.”
Extremely to the point and true and if I lived in Torquay, Australia or Jan Juc or even Gnarwarre I would beg to be his campaign manager.
Yes, it is true. Maurice Cole is running for public office on a grand, explosive anti-WSL platform.
According to the Brisbane Times, there exists, in Torquay, a plan for a permanent viewing platform at Bells Beach to be used chiefly by the World Surf League for viewing and filming the once-annual Rip Curl Pro.
Mr. Cole ain’t having it and has cobbled together a coalition of independent like-minded candidates in order to put a stop to the whole nonsense.
“We are already seeing the most overcrowded car parks and surf we’ve ever seen,” Mr Cole declared and also, that surfers and residents were angry about the proposal and believed there should only be temporary infrastructure installed for the annual Rip Curl Pro surfing contest along with accusing the council of attempting to appease the World Surfing League by agreeing to build the platform at the community’s expense.
Appeasing the World Surf League would be foolish as the enterprise is in full retreat and should be chased to Santa Monica then broken on the Third Street Promenade while buskers sing songs of it’s demise.

The Surf Coast shire hosted my brief but thrilling foray into a faux-homeless-slash-blue-collar lifestyle in 2002.
I decided to hop off at Anglesea after hitch-hiking from south aus. Late April. The plan: camp squat in someone’s garden until I found some work, and then look for a room to rent for a while. I had enough cash for a backpackers, but I was determined to go faux-ferral. I’d never get the opportunity to do this back in south africa.
Found a decent back garden to pitch my tent in. Next day I realised there were neighbours. Went to introduce myself to the old retired couple as their friendly neighbouring squatter. They welcomed me with open arms and gave me some cash as a “commonwealth gift”. They felt it necessary to tell me how they didn’t like how lots of Asians were moving into Australia.
Over the weekend some new neighbours from Melbourne arrived, a young couple with small kiddies. Dog barked at me in my tent all night. Went to say hello in the morning, and they offered me use of their outside flatlet until I found some work.
I found some ad hoc garden maintenance work within about a week, and then started to rent a room from a proper blue collar family of a single mother with a mild drinking problem and 4 mostly adult boys. The dad had walked out on them a while back. The boys’ initial friendliness quickly dissolved into polite tolerance as they realised what a prissy wanker I was.
My garden work employment also slowly disappeared as the guy realised how unfit for commercial manual labour I was.
After about a month I retreated to Melbourne where I reintegrated back into my familiar herd of middle class wanker urbanites.
A truly grand adventure in the Surf Coast shire!!

Nothing against Maurice but I was a bit surprised that convicted felons were allowed to run for office.
The problem with torquay is that it’s become a shit hole suburb of Geelong and the reason why the car parks are full is because it of the loser infested aspirational suburbs that surround it, like Armstrong Creek.
Torquay was doomed the moment they put in the first traffic lights.

Torquay was doing fine until the disgraced former coach of Geelong, and the millionaire property developer (and brother of Torquay big wave charger) went and bought all the land around the Torquay Airport and got planning permission. Walked away with millions and fucked Torquay up the arse with no lube.
The genie’s out of the bottle and no putting it back. That’s why everyone from Torquay is moving out if they can.
Not that I live there anymore , but thank fuck someone had the great idea to create National Parks on the Northern and Southern Borders of Sydney otherwise the Newcastle / Sydney / Wollongong stretch would be be one endless mega beachside concrete carpark .

haha , I don’t do the after comp shit ,as I usually get up for a surf at 5.00am in the morning , just wondering could you be my makeup and fashion co-ordinator, and change that Dero look as it seems to bother you……I don’t hare anything ….but the fact is I was on the ASP board for the surfers for 22 years , battled for them …now I do a bit of coaching .a lot of friends gather on the stairs , mostly the coaches who I help with changing surf conditions……grumpy in your world , passionate in others to help my community!

Good job taking action and getting involved. So many people just bitch about things instead of putting in time a the local level. The little school district where I live is a perfect example- my mom ran for the school board back in the 80s because she wanted to help. She’s still on the (unpaid) board to this day! For one, shes good at it and enjoys helping kids. Two, no one else ever runs or wants to donate their time. When my kids went there in the 2005-2015, we had well to do parents bitching and complaining over test scores, bus stop locations, the quality of cafeteria food, etc. Whenever I would suggest running for school board, it was “I don’t have time”, “it doesn’t pay” or whatever excuse they had. Easier to just complain and take shots at the people who are trying.

The reason why Torquay is so crowded is there’s been a push to make the federal seat of Corangamite a Labor seat. To do that you need to fill it with Labor voters who live in wannabe kook suburbs like Armstrong Creek and commute to geelong (federal seat of Corio) to work. Previously Corangamite was a blue ribbon liberal seat full of cow cockies from Colac and Winchelsea.
and that’s why Labor has allowed an extra 100,000 people to come and live in Torquay/Armstrong Creek ………with no plan/infrastructure , but they did promise an impact study , but now refuse to do one….as they know that it will show a serious degradation in lifestyle and property values….
Are they still planning on building the heated pool for Torquay when there’s one just up the road in Geelong? That’s the thing that really shits people in the towns that pay disproportinate rates in the SCS, all the money goes to Torquay. Next they’ll be asking for a monorail!
