Revealed today news that the Japanese government is looking for a “face-saving” way of announcing the 2021 Games, already postponed for one year, will have to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a senior member of the ruling coalition, there is agreement that the Games, already postponed a year, are doomed. The aim now is to find a face-saving way of announcing the cancellation that leaves open the possibility of Tokyo playing host at a later date. “No one wants to be the first to say so but the consensus is that it’s too difficult,” the source said. “Personally, I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
Publicly, Japan’s prime minister remains bullish and says holding the Games will be “proof of human victory against the coronavirus.”

I’m not sure where your research came from, but your flu numbers are inexact. During January, flu cases went up 21%; from December, 30% (verifiable with the CDC). Even with a 5% margin of error, it isn’t even remotely close to a 90% drop.
Also, a more deadly strain appearing as there are new treatments follows the pattern of how diseases work. Mutations occur both naturally over time and in response to effective illness-fighting measures. It makes perfect sense that as we find new and better ways to combat COVID, we would face mutations.
And even if you don’t believe in masks, your chance to be a decent human being is as simple as choking back that inconvenience for the next (*fingers crossed* no more than) six months and wearing one. Because until people start behaving like it matters, you’re right, we’re screwed.
