I can’t remember if it was yesterday, during finals day of the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona, or the day before when 3x World Champion Mick Fanning shocked the international sporting community by announcing his un-retirement and re-entering professional surfing at the highest possible level.

Mick Fanning has stunned fans after announcing he will come out of retirement to compete at the World Surf League Leg in Narrabeen as a wildcard.
After 20 years since he won his first event event as a wildcard, Fanning announced he would return after contemplating coming out of retirement last year.

Considering that Narabeen is an hour and half drive from Newy, and appears to be essentially a ‘shitty beach break’ dependent on shifting sandbanks and particular swells, what is the attraction? I’m sure it gets absolutely epic but is it that much of a sure thing? More than Newy with its rocks as a permanent wave-breaking feature?

It could be noted Kelly kept surfing into a ripe old age, but the difference as I see it is that Kelly’s always had an X factor that Mick doesn’t have. Mick has bullet proof front side figure 8 surfing. Textbook. And that’s about it. Kelly through his 40’s was still bringing new things to the table. He wasn’t relying on his past skills, but evolved his surfing to fit the new criteria. Through his 40’s, Kelly’s heats were still must see. Anybody feel that way about Mick his last year on tour?
Mick hasn’t announced it yet, but will be riding an inflatable surf mat , just to throw shade on Smelly Skater’s X factor …..
One could argue Italo as the past decade of professional surfing’s best ‘“discovery”. Chippa deserves honorable mention without a doubt
Aren’t there any young Narrabeen (or adjacent) locals worthy of taking the wildcard spot ?
Or is ripcurl the umbrella comp sponsor and pushing for it in an effort to sell some old ‘Mick branded’ stock left languishing in a storeroom somewhere ?
Surely once you’ve officially retired you should stay that way unless you requalified legitimately.
And it’s not as if he’s been missed by anyone, other than ripcurls new owners to shift that old stock maybe.
