Two days ago, the news that InterSport Corp, owners of Wham-O toys, was taking pre-orders for a limited edition re-release of the classic Morey MACH 7 following Tom Morey’s death was met with a hostile response from family and pro’s despite an undisclosed portion of sales going to the fam.
From Tom’s FB page,
“This is the Morey Family and WE DO NOT APPRECIATE THIS THIEF IN THE NIGHT ACTION OF THIS CORPORATE MOVE. THERE IS NO CONTRACTURAL AGREEMENT HERE TO MOREY FAMILY FOR THIS TYPE OF CORPORATE FINANCIAL GAIN IN THE MIDST OF OUT LOSS.
“No, FUCK YOU GUYS,” wrote nineties superstar Nick Gibbs. “NO WAY WILL I BUY THIS OR ANY PRODUCT FROM YOU, EVER, YOU FUCKING SOULLESS PARASITES.”
Now, InterSport Corp, who own the rights to the Morey name and design, which also includes black rails and pinlines on bodyboards, has backed down on the planned run of 500 Mach 7s selling at a very reasonable, I thought, two hundred bucks a pop.
In a statement Wham-O President Todd Richards wrote,
In response to the MACH 7 Commemorative Edition bodyboard, Morey Bodyboards would like to clarify following feedback regarding the pre-order announcement.
This bodyboard is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Boogieboard. And, with permission from Tom Morey prior to his untimely passing, was to be announced for pre-order with an estimated delivery in March 2022.
With respect to his family wishes, we have decided to stop pre-order until further notice. Those who have placed their orders will still receive their boards.
To the bodyboarding community, our goal was and is to celebrate Tom’s legacy, the bodyboarding sport, to encourage new boarders to experience what you experience with the ocean. We apologize for any misperception that our communications may have caused, as it was not our intent.

So personally knowing Tom, and working on the 50th anniversary celebration team, as well as still talking with his son Sol regularly im in a bit of a beneficial spot to speak on this.
Tom did not talk to Morey about this. In fact Tom did commemrative board with Superior Foam(owned by original Morey Boogie employee Debbie Coldwell) that was shaped by PMA and Jimmy Linville. That board was auctioned off at the official 50 year anniversary party we threw this summer. The very same party Whamo/intersport said they were going to support, and then backed out of at the last minute.
Aside from that, Tom was working with Bobby Szabadd(the BZ in BZ bodyboards) on a new venture after that event anyway.
Tom was not attempting to work with the Morey Brand, if he was we would have all known about it. Then right after Tom passes intersport jumped out with this bullshit and tried to sell it to us. The ones who had just dealt with Morey yet again screwing the community over.
Jokes aside, no one who cares about the boogie wants Whammo or intersport involved with our sport in anyway. Up to and including the Morey Family. We are weighing options now to buy back the Morey Brand(at least for high end boards) and restore its name and give the family some control again.

As an overweight white male in his thirties who is about to start bodyboarding in three weeks or so, I am absolutely qualified to express my feeling about this development. And I am fucking outraged! If I had the Facebook I’d be smashing my phone with my pudgy fingers, typing in CAPS!
It is no sin …. A mate of ours was a talented part time surf photographer in the 80s and then ,thanks to Boogie Fever CASH in the 90s , became a Full Time Bodyboard Photographer with time on his hands to be an excellent surf Photographer ….Still is .

I have only used a bodyboard once , with flippers , in a strange 3 way fun day surf comp in France , long board / bodyboard / skateboard ….
Bloody Hell it is hard work on the calves and glutes …..so be careful if you don’t want end up with your bum on a reef calendar .
I did bodyboard a lot this summer, great fun, load ebike with with board, fins, lunch, towel, book/kindle and change of clothes. Take a bit of abuse from lineup but all in fun. Can hit a lot of spots. Bon temps!

I boogie boarded for a few weeks one Summer before I started Surfing therefore I am a expert on Bodyboarding.
So my feelings about this are crucify dissidents, burn Witches and all things that a man {dead or alive} gave permission to, should come to fruition.
NZ and the surfing world in general praises you for putting A LID ON your Lidding Career before you were addicted and spent your surfing life squirming on your belly like a snake ( or getting seriously barreled THE EASY WAY ) ….. Amen
Ha! I was friendly with a lovely Catholic girl. One of her many brothers used to give me shit about being a stand-up surfer, as a hardcore bodyboarder. I shut him up one day in front of his numerous fam by asking him; “What do you reckon Jesus would do? Walk on water like a man or slither on his belly like a snake?”

I visited Jesus’ surf spot on the Sea of Galilee , also known as Lake Tiberius , and I doubt it ever gets much more than a toe high ripple ( but Surfline might forecast/ prophesize shin to thigh high …..A TRUE MIRACLE )
I’ve been to Job’s Tomb. Slightly underwhelming, but at least it was within reach of surfable waves in the south of Oman, not far from Chas’ Shangri La of Yemen. Khalil Gibran’s Tomb is a much more inspiring place. Although that was for a snowboarding trip. It’s still fun to say ‘I learnt to snowboard in Lebanon. There was a solid 3’ swell hitting the Lebbo/Mediterranean coast, but I wasn’t packing a board on the flight in. There were a few tasty looking reefy set ups on the drive up to the mountains.

Incredibly interesting part of the world to visit . I saw waves in Tel Aviv , the most beautiful soldiers in the world platting each other’s hair , with machine guns over their shoulders , protecting the Central Post Office and the Holocaust Museum , the only time that the local population ever helped out with directions and Bethlehem in December looking more like Stalag 13 , not a Xmas tree in sight or a Carol to be heard and the only decoration made out of wood was a tower , with a machine gun post ……so much ancient history combined with the turmoil of recent history . A friend of my dad was in Beirut at the end of WWII and described it as one of the most beautiful cities in the world , 30 years before shit hit the fan and seemingly keeps hitting it .
I’d go further and say that Lebanon is a stunning country and not in anyway what you would expect. We went when things were ‘quiet’ but there were still plenty of machine guns in the hands of soldiers visible. We didn’t spend much time in Beirut, apart from landing and driving out immediately to the hills. The city is full of stunning architecture and the outer suburbs were showing the history with bullet holes strafing many buildings and even cars that were getting around. (None of those fake bullet hole stickers needed…)
The coast was pretty nice, but the drive up the mountains to the snow was mind-blowing. It looked like an alpine region in Switzerland, with villages perched on the edge of cliffs. And the town we stayed in was the one with the National Park where the tree from their flag is. While we were there, there was a scare over the mountain ridge where a shootout between the cops/army and drug dealers had occurred.
As a result, there were fears the baddies would come over the hill and hang out. Our town was pumped up with a lot more soldiers visibly manning checkpoints. Turns out it was the main base for the Lebanese Army snow training. So this was good for them to get out amongst it. We always felt pretty safe.
Sad to see the tragedy of the pandemic on top of the explosion destroying what was an amazing place.

Went for a surf this morning which coincided with ~100 boogs doing a paddle out for Morey, which itself coincided with an honest to god 45 min lull. Not a wave broke. Not sure what that means.

It was weird that the family brought up that there was no contractual deal for the release, but the company references an oral agreement with Tom regarding the release. I think the company had good intentions trying to provide the family with a portion of monies from sales, which likely they weren’t bound by a “contractual” relationship to even do.
I think people are being tough on the company. Commemorative efforts financially benefitting family often follows people’s death. When would the timing have been appropriate? A few more weeks? Months? Years?
And who from the family do you think sent that post? His wife? I doubt that. So who?

I’d think he be stoked too. Feels like someone’s frustration with Tom’s decision to sell way back when has finally bubbled to the surface. All pissed off about what they should have inherited and shit. You can always count on the jackals coming out of the woodwork when there’s a death ina family and there’s even the slightest hint of inheritance.
Tom sold Morey boogie to Krasco corp. in the late 70’s or very early 80’s and it’s passed through a few hands, including Toy giant Mattel so that’s not it. This was just a failure to read the room by the big corp that owns Morey. Morey and BZ boards have not really been considered part of the bodyboarding universe for probably 20 years. Kinda like how lightning bolt was uber core and is now bought by kooks in department stores.
