We live in the day and age of Big Brother, of the robot, let no surfer be misled. Cameras watch us shop, watch us drive, follow us to the beach and record our various surfings. And when we are not participating in this glorious “sport of kings,” they still point and film and broadcast waves and missed opportunities and potential opportunities to the online world.
But what of corners that should be left secret? That might be left unmolested?
Well, the robot has no feeling for such trivial matters and the masters of the robot are too busy chasing market share to care. Masters of the robot going even further to debase and ruthlessly censor the brave few who may or might call the invasion out for what it is.
Take, for example, Swellnet, Australia’s answer to Surfline. Reports coming out of that Lucky Country suggest that the online surf forecaster has sped up erection of cameras, placing them on private homes, pointed at famous waves but also lesser known, hush-hush ones.
And impassioned plea dropped into my messages today reading:
We have an issue down here in sunny Torquay. You are probably familiar with the surf website Swellnet here in Australia. Well they are currently following the Surfline approach of paying landowners to install surf cameras, most recently one has been put up over Winkipop (bells) and another further down the coast. This has caused considerable anger and frustration from the local surf community that don’t want said cameras. Now this is where things get interesting, I made a direct but polite post asking what the justification was for said camera, which was promptly deleted. Apparently the same thing has happened to dozens of others. A friend of mine tested the same waters today and comments were deleted and he was blocked. This has degenerated into full on censorship and they are maintaining a wall of positive noise and you know how we feel about that!
I certainly do and I’d like to take a moment to deeply shame Swellnet. It is one thing to camera, quite another to ruthlessly censor. The People™ may be many things but they ain’t entirely dumb. To both rob them of their privacy but also rob them of their voice seems… positively evil.
The cameras may be a necessary business move but censorship? Not allowing a critical voice? Imagining that opinions will change with a Chinese-esque approach to free speech?
No, I say.

I resemble that remark and will be back in OC in 12 days visiting my oldest and buying a new old man type surf board for me.
I’ve been checking the Winkicam there are always about 30 guys out unless its really big or tiny. If anything it discourages people from visiting – it just always looks crowded. Also checked the Wye river cam yet to see a surf able wave there.
Theres only one wave at wye, it handles a crowd of approximately 3 people and is very sand dependent. If anyone surfs the shorebreak they are german backpacker.

Mr Meoff- scallop ceviche is no substitute for Madeoff’s seared scallops(Bernie would be pleased):
Seared Sea or Bay Scallops
1lb sea or bay scallops
1 onion- Prefer Videlia sweet or yellow onion
3 garlic cloves- use a garlic press
½ tsp of ground pepper
½ tsp of garlic powder
1 cup flour
¾ cup brown sugar
1 lemon
4 TBSP butter
Olive or Wesson oil (I prefer Wesson or regular cooking oil over olive oil)
Rinse scallops in water then place on paper towels, top and bottom, to dry them out for about 5 minutes. Slightly moist is ok as it helps the flour mix adhere to the scallops. Chop up a ¼ of the onion into fine pieces and press two of the garlic cloves and put in pan with enough oil to cover the pan an 1/8 inch or slightly deeper in oil. Turn heat on low to let this mix simmer/brown until you are ready to put in the scallops. You might go between medium and low to brown the onions and garlic. The onions and garlic should be brown by the time you are ready to turn the heat up to cook the scallops. Put flour, brown sugar, garlic powder and pepper in a ziploc bag(1 gal) big enough to put all scallops in. Shake up powder mix and you may have to break up some of the brown sugar if it is in clumps. Put all of the scallops in the bag and shake it up to cover all scallops with the flour mix.
Now it is time to turn up the pan heat to high for about 60 seconds. If the oil starts to smoke just as you put the scallops in that is ideal but not too much smoke. Cook them about 90 seconds then flip over for another 90 seconds while moving the pan around to ensure there is some oil under each scallop. I might go slightly longer on the 2nd side then flip again. You want a brown sear on each side and it ok to take one out and take a bite to see if the texture is to your liking. Once you have the right sear on both sides slide the scallops to one side of the pan and put the butter in to melt and let the butter move across the pan and flip the scallops one more time so butter is on both sides then place them on plates for serving. Finish off the scallops with squeezed lemon.

Perhaps the Torquay crew just need him to move down there, his very protective of his own but very exploitive of others, what’s the word, starts with a H…….?
