"Stop spreading untrue information!"
World Surf League executives must certainly have their stomachs twisted into knots this morning as they woke to realize the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing trained its potent ire on Santa Monica overnight. BeachGrit, as it were, knows the feeling. One month ago, it was this very tasteless surf tabloid in the crosshairs after posting a clearly offensive picture of an older woman longboarding.
Much reflection, soul-searching, was forced afterward. Many apologies given.
The Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing, with a mission of supporting access, inclusion, equity and equal pay and promises to be “new wave of professional surfing,” had more work to do, though, and the World Surf League has, now, been taught a serious lesson.
The trouble began when the WSL’s Senior Vice President Jessi Miley-Dyer met tennis icon Billie-Jean King, over the weekend, penning, “I met @billiejeanking last night and it genuinely made me realize the impact of all of our hard work because SHE KNEW about surfing, and what we have done for women in the sport. She even knew details! People who say ‘you shouldn’t meet your heroes’ are just picking the wrong people to look up to. Plus, she has three names too which we also talked about.”
Moving, yes?
Apparently no.
In a subsequent post, Miley-Dyer re-referenced King and the Committee came in guns blazing.
“Why are you lying to @billiejeanking? ‘Things’ are NOT equal. The WSL excludes women and girls. Stop discriminating against women and girls. You are damaging women and girls. Stop spreading untrue information!”
Ouch.
At time of writing, it is unclear which lies were told and which “women” and “girls” have been excluded and discriminated against and also how they have been damaged though I am certain it’ll cause days of wonder.
Shame WSL.
Deep shame.
Lying to Billie-Jean King, I imagine, a mortal sin.

There are/were good folks on Wall Street but I happened to work with a few who were ruthless and to your Q had limited to zero empathy for anyone other than themselves. As for that woman, she is my wife of 31 yrs and I love embellishing her lack of awareness in the lineup.
Also a sign of too much mileage.

WSL would be so much smarter to keep their mouths shut and not say things that suggest you think you have addressed an issue. So, so rookie.
Having half the number of women on tour compared to men is a problem. Makes the whole cheering equality thing the WSL is doing seem very bizarre and disconnected. Minimizing the opportunities for all the female talent coming up ain’t good for the future of the sport (business etc..). I was hoping Billie Jean could help the WSL understand why the values the WSL aggressively virtue signal matter beyond their IG posts. Still not sure if the WSL can overcome it’s own systemic inequality if it’s apparent to everybody but them. What a triumph it would be if they could overcome their own bs.
The men’s tour would probably be better with half the number of men so…

Here we go again. Moller, Valenti, KK, Alms, et al wanting something for nothing again. Been riding the coat tails of the men for years. Face it, your surfing level is nowhere near where the men are currently at. Let’s just blame that on some mysterious lack of opportunity that men where given for free and the women want for free. Problem is, the men worked it for years with no recognition, no money, no support, no media, no skis. Now the ladies want to ride that work and get paid for something they didn’t do. For fucks sake, go through the same process as they did and stop fucking whining about it being unfair.
THIS may explain why my wife has zero guilt over taking waves she isn’t entitled to on a regular basis. That evil woman even hit me back in September and pretended to not know it was me…she’s lucky she’s small, attractive and willing to pick up the tab now and then.
