"Tomorrow morning 6/23 he is having heart surgery to save his life. I said I'd do what I can to try to get some prayers sent his way."
The great Clyde Aikau, little brother of the legendary North Shore lifeguard Eddie Aikau, is in a Las Vegas hozzy undergoing heart surgery for an aortic aneurysm after he collapsed leaving a restaurant.
On Clyde’s Facebook page a family friend writes, “Tomorrow morning 6/23 he is having a heart surgery to save his life. I told him I will do what I can to help and try to get some prayers sent his way. He said ‘brah, I need a million of them’. If you have a minute say a little prayer for him to recover.”
An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or ballooning of the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body. If the damn thing ruptures it leads to severe internal bleeding, eight times outta ten y’don’t survive, so real lucky his doc caught it.
Older surfers will remember Clyde’s classic win on a wave-score countback with Mark Foo at the 1986 Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, the famous big wave event named after his brother who went missing while trying to save his crew-mates on the ill-fated Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule’a.
The crew had embarked on a voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti to recreate the ancient Polynesian migration routes. The Hokule’a encountered rough weather and capsized in the Molokai Channel. Eddie volunteered to paddle on his surfboard toward the island of Lanai to seek help for the crew and was never seen again.
Clyde would later claim it was the spirit of his brother in the form of two turtles who guided him to the win,
“So I looked at these two turtles, and I followed them,” he said in an interview with PBS in 2014. “And this is where everybody sits down, all five guys, and I would follow the turtles past them, and go deeper than all of them, about a hundred feet out. And as soon as I got to that point, the biggest wave of the day would just pull right in, and I’d jump right on it. And just rip it up, come all the way in, and I’d paddle out, and the turtles would be there again. And I’d follow these turtles.”
In 1990, Clyde placed fifth in the Eddie, tenth in 2001 and eighth in 2002.
Maybe you remember the ruckus over the contest which is now called The Eddie Aikau Invitational after the Aikau family rejected offers from Quiksilver when their ten-year agreement expired in 2016.
Thing was, Quiksilver owned the permits for the 2015-16 contest and canvassed the idea of calling it a different name to circumvent the need to involve the famous Hawaiian family. Quiksilver played around with The Quiksilver: In Memory of Jose Angel, The Quiksilver: In Memory of Todd Chesser, The Quiksilver: In Memory of Brock Little.
Anyway, the contest went ahead in 2016 as The Quiksilver: In Memory Of Eddie Aikau and the agreement was terminated shortly after. Fittingly, it was the last time Clyde, then aged sixty-six, would surf in the event, finishing twentieth out of twenty-nine.
This year, branded as The Eddie Invitational for the first time ever, the event “proved its worth as the most prestigious surf contest on earth. The mix of terror, art, skill, old-school charging was worth its weight and it made all the sense in the world that viewer numbers smashed any World Surf League event.”
More on Clyde as news comes to hand.
Kelly Slater, aka Robert Slater, is a top donor with one thousand dollars added to the kitty, which stands at three and a bit gees of a two-hundred k goal.

Clyde awesome Human. I’ll pray for a good recovery.
Update from Surfline. Sorry for the copy of figure it ok, it’s Clyde everyone Uncle or Bruddah!
Doctors removed the aneurysm and replaced the adjoining aortic valve with a cow’s version. The surgery has gone well. “He called me last night, looking for his Netflix password,” says Eleni Aikau, Clyde’s wife. “I have to assume this is a good sign.”
What will be real sad is Netflix puts a page saying is this your home wifi and lock the log in if you say No
Clyde nearly went !!
You think any other species hopes their own die?
Or is it only surfers?
If only sharks did their jobs?
Gosh there is a LOT of food now.
Golden Corral for GWS!
Just taste everything!
???
I had a difficult boating situation in a foreign country.
After the minor drama of the rescue, the EMT in the ambulance was incredible. Her guidance and thoroughness was exceptional. She begged me to go to hospital and get a myriad of things checked out because I was nearing 50 and would require that testing anyway.
The boys were having a bar b que for us that night, I was scheduled to leave the next morning and none had yet heard about the capsize. I declined her offer, enjoyed the send off and flew home a mess the next day.
Her voice haunts me.
Came home to a mess of deductible this and that, you need surgeries, never do this or that again (surfing), out of pocket costs virtual nightmare of Private Insurance Parasites.
“Don’t go back to the states without checking up”…..
I’m interested in the back story of Clyde’s beach concession at Ft Derussy area. How did he lose it? Sucks to see the true Hawaiians get edged out.
I’m sure Elo will comment on Clyde in his i.g.
That is a story in itself. Type.
You think Quiksilver will kick in to the gofundme?
I’d be more selective but this is probably something I could get behind.
Peppermill trying to claim anudda brudda? Best wishes Clyde.
I’m sure the Canadian government has a good FAQ you can use to convince those who you feel would most benefit.
What are his deductibles going to be….$1000?
His Qiksilver money should cover that, right?
As for the US Healthcare system…it’s laughable that people criticize while not understanding the innovations that help socialized medicine in other countries.
Critics are also willfully ignorant of the significant faults with socialized medicine.
But hey, in Canada, they encourage you to kill yourself so they don’t have to treat you.
This is one of the nastiest operation a person can have, my mom at 77 years old had one done at USC keck in LA after her cardiologist in Las Vegas mentioned that he can do it but the hospital outside of Nevada are better equipped to handle this procedure. Because she has Medicare (who doesn’t have it at 67), the hospital was able to make the changes and my mom did not have to pay a cent for the operation. Good luck Clyde, its going to be long recovery but thankfully they found
Prayers for Clyde.
Fuck yeah, prayers for the win!
Was waiting for the gofundme from the beginning. Isn’t it easier to have a universal healthcare system than donating money every time someone has to use an overpriced medical facility or procedure?
I’m gong to tell you a secret…
Clyde is what 72 or 73?
He’s been eligible for Medicare since he was 65.
This type of life saving surgery should be covered so any fundraising should be for incidentals like family travel or his specialized travel back to Hawaii.
He is in Vegas. Throw that shit on red.
Always bet on black!
Too Soon….
News flash USA: Medicare coverage is not socialized medicine; it’s not free & there’s no specialty travel! (Sorry Clyde, no pretty haole nurse holding your hand in 1st class on your way home.) Medicare is not just ok — it’s generally shitty!
The insurance “package” you purchase determines your monthly cost and in turn your medical & drug benefits (copayments). Monthly premiums can run as high as $600 in Hawai’i before adding drug coverage. Choosing a package with a lower premium — or none — will increase your copayments considerably. Not recommended for the elderly or any person hoping to hold on to their sanity.
Moreover, medicare packages with lower premiums tank the likelihood physicians, surgeons & specialists will accept your insurance. If that weren’t bad enough, on top of the insurance premium, you also have to pay the feds a monthly fee of several hundred dollars just because. That’s why your parents say: save, save, save for retirement! I wish I had.
It’s insurance and NOT socialized medicine.
But he does qualify and should be enrolled unless he has private, retiree insurance which would likely be less expensive and provide more coverage.
And I agree with you…save, save, save!
That’s shitty. Good luck mate
Yes sorry my bad, thats Moniz.
And the point was her donation, and all other family members, rapidly outweighed ks contribution featured in the article. Which to me is impressive since ks is a millionaire.
True icon if our culture. May the surgery be successful and he be back in the lineup soon.
All the best to him.
Seems Kelia muniz put down a grand also, apart from all other muniz donations. And its not like she’s the millionaire owner purps, outerknown, klly, the ranch etc.
Transparency is a bitch!
Your contribution was?
A misunderstood comment!
Hang tough cuz !
cali coastal insurance/i’m beggin…
Clyde should be on the Federales dime with Medicare, no?
