Wild times in the Mentawais.
How many ways can a surfer get hurt in the lineup? Let us count the ways. Shark, stingray, stray longboard, Erik Logan, aggressive local, adult learner paddling toward shoulder, adult learner going over the falls, Brazilians, angry seals, angry seagulls, surfboard fins, surfboard noses, jellyfish, aging, saltwater crocodiles, people from Florida, riptides, undertows, urchins, surf school students, sexism and now we can, officially, add flying fish.
But let us hustle to the beautiful Mentawi Islands where our hero, Australian Steve Kezic, was minding his own business, sitting on his board, when he felt a heavy slap.
Eddie Rothman?
But no.
“At first, I thought it was the boys throwing some seaweed around, as we tend to do that for a laugh,” the salt and pepper topped man told Perth Now. “But a moment later I realised there was a fish in my face.”
A flying fish who had wedged its beak in Zezic’s nose, busted it off and left it behind. A surf coach was the first to notice and sat looking dumbfounded as the ugly weapon had pierced all the way through. It took 15 minutes to get back to the resort and blood was pouring everywhere. No one knew where the nearest hospital was but, thankfully, one in the group was an emergency room doctor. He removed the weapon, stitched it up and told Zezic that 1/2 inch further north and he would have lost his eye.
“I was incredibly lucky. It felt like one of those up-to-the-gods chance events,” he said.
Now, the question for you. Would you rather get speared in the nose by a flying fish or sit around and wait for the World Surf League to get underway in Brazil for the Vivo Rio Pro in knee-high waves?
I’d take the former.
World Cursed League.

Thought so…
I’ve had 2 Fkn needle fish hit me in Hawaii, always south shore around sunset. 2 x in da Fkn neck. I always surf with sunglasses kooked out at sunset….the first one was a biggie running from a seal. 2nd one I was duck diving at bowls. Full Fkn speed. It felt like getting slapped by a Tbone 🥩. Lucky I have enough sun damage it didn’t penetrate…..
Snot funny.
It’s the Kepulauan Mentawai, the Mentawai Archepelago of West Sumatra – educate yourself.

It’s the worst! How anyone can watch this garbage is beyond me. Kelly knows.
Not a flying fish.
Indo-Pacific Longtom.
Not flying either.
Temporarily leaving watery substrate in explosive aerial maneuver.
Night surfing an iconic point, one guy paddled near me. September ’79. 8′ pumping southern hemi, longish lulls. I was annoyed, but he figured that I knew where to sit (I did) because I rode past him over and over. Never acknowledged his presence, turned away best I could in the dark.
Weird noise happens, thud, and suddenly I hear the guy groan and saw something football sized deflect off his side, flying fish. Dude doubles over and begins coughing in anguish.
“You ok, what happened?”
He couldn’t speak. Had him lay on his board and grab my leash and I pulled him into the lagoon so he didn’t have to walk over cobbles to shore. Writing in pain, a couple making out on the beach noticed and I told them that he got hit by a flying fish. Never seen one before.
Male raced to the parking lot and two more people began attending to him. I paddled back out and could see them assist him towards the lights on PCH.
Few days later, I pulled my wetsuit out in the empty parking lot and a shadow approached, the dude. He had broken a rib and they thought he punctured a lung, was held over night at St John’s Hospital. Thanked me for getting him to shore.
Never saw a flying fish before or since.
Just say Malibu. I hear it’s no longer secret!
Uncle Walt’s in Pedro had the first artichoke hearts fire-roasted. roosterfish & flying fish were ceviched’d. need bread!
Good story, though I can’t imagine being annoyed that one other person had paddled out when I was night surfing.
Some fish have all the luck
Some fish do nothing but complain!

Gorilla, ya know da guy?
rob schneider?
great read: short, precise, anecdotal, and gets straight to the point…but you left out baby seals and red tide…and that dead fishy smell. we’ve all got a good nose for ocean dangers. ‘ceptin’ Zezic, who did not order a fillet of fish!
No fish sammish?
can i cry now? surf’s up!
You’d think knowing where the nearest hospital would be something the ship’s captain would know.
…and the eye being 1/2 an inch from the nose doesn’t require 6 -10 years of Medical School.
Is that Christian Horner?
The WSL came to town
And nary a wave could be found
Amidst ELo’s asinine braying
Six inch waves Pip was slaying
And the world revolves without caring
moon and sea turtles pairing
and NOT sharin’ Kirra with Karen…it’s a Small world…
