In the latest episode of Chas Hates Surfing, the best-selling author Chas Smith weighs in on the Easter crucifixion of three-time Brazilian world champ Gabriel Medina at the Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro.
After a shock loss in his round of 32 heat to San Clemente rookie Cole Housemand over Easter, thirty-year-old Gabriel Medina unleashed in his post-heat interview with Laura Enever describing it as “the worst judging I’ve ever seen.”
Gabriel Medina claimed he’d long been underscored by the judges (although it’s difficult to explain his three world titles) saying, “It’s bad for the sport, I’ve been through a lot of judging things but I feel like this is the worst one.… we pretend it’s not happening. It’s happening. It’s bad for the sport.”
Gabriel Medina’s outburst follows a long proud line of Brazilians complaining about losing, notably in El Salvador and at Surf Ranch.
Chas Smith asks, “Do the judges deserve it? On one hand, yes, the judges are…human. And they made a mistake.”
But…

Gabs air was underscored, clearly. Speed is one of the criteria (speed, power, flow) and Medina (as always) had speed. Cole at 215+ lbs didn’t have it and it shows.

….but honestly it shouldn’t even come down to this two of the top pro surfers grinding it out in small garbage surf. WSL has only 10 events per year. you’d think they’d do better to make every one be epic.

This year The wsl has clearly shifted a few degrees from the wall of positive noise so possibly you caused it chas, you and dls constant belittlement of the wsl has finally resulted in a change that will turn competitive surfjng into tabloid entertainment that is something resembling well beach grit itself, careful what you wish for.

Chas looks way more comfortable on location than some contrived “I read a lot” studio set.
Chas is right, “enragement equals engagement”. Gabby’s outcries bring tons of attention and engagement to the WSL and other surf media outlets. Also to himself. Which is good for their numbers and great for the commitment his own fans feel towards him (tons of Brazilians passionately arguing he was robbed has gotta strengthen their bond with him). So doesn’t that encourage the judges to keep poking the bear every now and then when they need to spice things up? Looks like controversy’s good for business. Sure, it ain’t great for maintaining the farce that surfing’s a legitimate professional sport, but I’m still watching. Angry fans are engaged fans, plain and clear.

Personally, it depended on what waves you scored. Counting the 4 WSL scoring waves Gabby lost. But if I was Judging, I would’ve scored his air higher and that would’ve been enough for the win on my card. Either way it was razor edge close and yeah so so far from the worst judging we or Gabriel have seen.
Gabby’s air was underscored a bit, Cole’s last wave was overscored a bit. Gabby was also a little angry in part because he let Cole go on that wave despite having priority. Not a mistake I’ve seen him make before.
It was also funny to watch the WSL instagram post on the heat. Of all the heats to do the whole “congrats Cole, you just beat your hero”, judgment was pretty off. As always.

look, I don’t know a lot about airs, and not really a fan of airs, but gabe’s air was insane.
he was completely laid out horizontal and he wrapped that thing around and landed it.
I don’t care about how he lands it, but the fact that he did, was insane and any other day that was an 8 minimum.
Throughout the heat Gabe showed more variety and innovation than Cole, that’s it. turn for turn Cole/Gabe, Gabe’s turns were more risky, critical and there was much more variety. I can do the Cole backhand snap all day, but no fricken way I can surf like Gabe.

Gabe’s air was average by modern standards, and the landing wasn’t clean. But it was underscored a bit. Cole surfed small waves very well for a guy his size, chucked buckets, but his scores were overcooked.
The real travesty is why is this being held at 2ft Winki. History, tradition, Rip Curl yada yada. This is the best product the Woz can grind out of the Australian continent?
To me he won, and won it by a mile. I don’t normally defend Gabby this much, but every single one of Cole’s 90’s surfing was overscored. Slow, less flow, no variety, worse waves, pump pump pump between turns… was biching here before the heat was close to over
I understand why Gabby was outraged. And yes, that air was underscored. In those conditions and unde the criteria they layed out that day, it shouldn’t have been higher.

in the good ole USA, we all grew up playing America’s pastime and learned as wee ones that if you take a close one with 2 strikes, it’s on you if the umpire punches you out on a called third strike. Gabe elected to take a close one by letting Cole go on the wave. I don’t care if Cole’s score wasn’t perfect, it’s on you if you put it in the judge’s hands. Clearly Gabe never played baseball.
