The story of two Australian surfers and their American friend who went missing on a surf trip to Baja California took a troublesome turn, today, as authorities have said they have found their tents, abandoned on the beach, along with other “evidence.”
Three people have, thus far, been arrested in connection to the disappearance as answers continue to be sought.
Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, along with Jack Carter Rhoad, traveled south of the border to enjoy a little swell near Ensenada. After they failed to check in to their Rosarito accomodations, alarm bells were sounded.
Initially, a woman was arrested who was said to have one of the brother’s phone and drugs. Later, the burnt out shell of the truck was discovered on a ranch near Ensenada leading to the arrests of two men. One of them was “in a relationship” with the woman.
Andrade Ramírez, the state’s chief prosecutor, shared with local news, “A working team (of investigators) is at the site where they were last seen, where tents and other evidence was found that could be linked to these three people we have under investigation. There is a lot of important information that we can’t make public. We do not know what condition they are in,” she added. “All lines of investigation are open at this time. We cannot rule anything out until we find them.”
The unfolding drama continues to highlight growing cartel unrest in the region. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a stern warning to any foreign nationals in Mexico.

Know the rules of engagement before you travel, adjust your behavior and don’t bring attention upon yourself. The rules that apply at home are not applied in foreign countries. Act accordingly. Anywhere you travel.
I’m assuming that’s what happened because that is what happens. Other people travel deeper into the country for decades with minor challenges. The warnings are not empty. You’re neither in control or safe on their terms.

There was predators down there 30 years ago and it’s only gotten worse. The car stereo is stolen before the paramedics arrive. Last time I was there, there was a burned out car every couple miles. Yes it’s a cultural thing. Culture that tolerates it and doesn’t do enough to change it.
Sadly sometimes it’s as simple as turning left instead of right.
My wife is Colombian. Takes me about 2 weeks until my sense of frustration turns to rage and I lose it with the country.
Usually they blame everything on a vague excuse: “corruption”.
The real problem is apathy. If people believe that nothing will, and nothing can change, they stop trying. And that leads to an every man for himself attitude. It also means most Colombians just wish they lived in Miami.
“Be the change you want to see in the world” has no traction because the challenges are simply insurmountable.
Believe in Mexico it’s called ‘la mordida’, (the bite), the bribe you can pay to get out of almost anything.
Oh man tell me about it. Wife’s nephew is a layabout loser that started causing trouble. Started getting people banging on the front door looking for him because he’d stolen a mobile phone or something. You can get shot for that in Colombia, and in fact his dad (my wife’s brother) got shot dead over a stolen motorbike.
So we decided to fuck him off to Spain and get some work with a friend of a friend on some farm. Basically a one way trip (and everyone was quite cool with the idea that he’d be an illegal immigrant). But despite telling me all about how corruption was to blame for all the ills in the country, we had to pay a “fee” to get his name taken off the mandatory national service which he hadn’t done and would prevent him leaving the country. Also, the rich kids can pay to get drafted into the Navy, which is way more safe than getting drafted into the Army or Police where FARC will take pot shots at you.
I really love Colombia, but sometimes it just drives me insane.
Best explaination of the harsh reality. To get here they have to pay the cartel and carry some drugs. Now they are here with their apathy intact. It doesn’t serve our society to have so many “newcomers” with that mentality ingrained in them.
It does add a certain, how shall we say, element, (getting out of your comfort zone), while traveling down there.
It seems like the laws of physics just seem to stop when you cross the border—as you just never know what you might encounter there.
