"The fear he has, of hitting himself there and really hurting himself and suffering an irreversible injury stays in his head."
It was an accidental tube, to be sure, a misstep on the takeoff erasing his speed and sending him into a gaping tube but for Filipe Toledo it was the one wave that has smashed a fear of Teahupoo that has haunted the two-time world champ since his zero-point heat there a decade ago.
(Toledo subsequently claimed his zero-point total against Italo Ferreira was due to an elbow injury. “I had a couple stitches in me and one of the nerves on my elbow got inflamed so I couldn’t put any pressure on my arm. It was super hard for me to stand up on the board,” he said.)
Timid performances followed over the following ten years and BeachGrit was there with a magnifying glass to try and kick the talented Brazilian into gear. It must be noted that BeachGrit was also there to encourage when Filipe Toledo put his foot on the gas.
But, here, today, on a clean six-to-eight-foot day, against two of the sports wildest chargers, Italian Leo Fioravanti and Brazilian Joao Chianca, given no chance of winning and wearing an impact suit, Toledo held onto the lead, even paddle battling Chianca for a set, until the final ten minutes when his opponents’ experience at Teahupoo proved the difference.
BeachGrit commentary was quick to praise:
“Alright, fair dig pip. Glad to see him paddle into a few. He doesn’t have to be a hellman, as long as he shows some bravery.”
Importantly,
“He tried.”

Hell yeah Filipe! Now use this momentum to go out there and snag a real deep bomb and put this thing to rest once and for all
That aged like milk.
When it comes to encouraging Filipe in heavy surf comments always age like milk
true courage…facing your fears and overcoming them….next?
This aged well
Aged like a baguette.
Cunt still didn’t get barrelled
Hard to say if we were all impressed with his charging or taken by the fact that he actually went at all?
I think that he went.
I’m fucken mortified I missed this. Typical Bali “internet out sir” from my lovely hotel peoples. No timeframe of restoration. Great work Pip. I;m happy for the guy, shackles gone. He might have a shot a Pipe now too.
Oh that is honestly so lovely that he got a good one !
So stoked for him.
Xox
The death of Beach Grit…
Never!
😂😂😂
Charging paddles…..200……stand clear……..we got a pulse!
As I said in the live thread, I was completely surprised on his 2 waves. I think he may have surprised himself. Give credit when due.
Did he leave a berley trail ? I know I would have.
Not sure if the slater esque no-hands airdrops were intentional or flukes, but he was at the very least charging as hard as the other two. Thrilling.
He had a dip. Got clobbered on a few but Good on him. Way better than I was expecting.
Too busy to watch and too annoyed by lack of surf round my parts.
I feel you brother, sometimes we need to get our stoke on to participate in life’s events, but mańana: it is a new day 🙏
Truly inspiring. He has rightfully won the hearts of fans and earned the nickname Mr. Teahupoo
I was hoping to win a slab of beer with an under 7 total score…rats! Fair dip Pip.
