Surf aerialists hang heads in shame after kite surfer shatters world record for highest jump

1500 feet of pure rad.

It feels but a few short years ago that airs, in surfing, were wildly exotic things only seen once every blue moon. Kelly Slater soaring momentarily above the lip in black and white, for example. These days, of course, airs are ubiquitous, Italo Ferreira throwing back to back to back leaps in the middle of a tube riding competition, air shows at wave tubs, kids down at the local beach break practicing fly-aways.

Surfers, being surfers, are proud of this advancement but that pride was turned into deep shame, overnight, when a British kite surfer set a new world record for highest air after soaring some 1,587 feet into the sky.

The highest surf air ever recorded is 6 feet.

Jake Scrace, who hails from Worthington in the United Kingdom’s middle, performed his feat of amazing strength off the Isle of Wight and shattered the previous record which had been 908.7ft. Still 902.7ft above surfing’s highest air.

I’m already thinking about what the next stunt could be and where we can go with it,” Scrace told the BBC. “It was the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on. Up there it was about trusting the team, the conditions and just going for it. “The sense of freedom was incredible and I’m buzzing that we got the record on the first attempt.”

Oh wait. I just read that he used a little motor to get him that high then glided back down.

Italo + 30 Red Bulls + jet pack = the record becoming ours.

Suck it, Jake Scrace.

Before I forget, there is a bar named Malt Shovel in Worthington. I’d like to go.

>It took Mr Scrace and paramotor pilot Chey Anich months to plan and was made possible by a team of 30 people, including safety divers and film specialists.

This is just inventing a new thing to say you’re the best at it. And if you document it well enough it all becomes real.

Which part is he inventing though? Paramotor-nope, base jumping-nope, kite surfing-nope. Guy just made something up by combining other pursuits together. Pretty lame.

Exactly. No one really cares about this. There’s no competition.

This isn’t directly related but a related phenomenon you see with sports broadcasting that I call Kolohe statistics. It’s when the announcer shares numbers or facts no one cares about like number of heat wins to distract from something, like never winning a CT level event. Baseball is particularly bad with this.

It’s basically a tow assisted base jump using a kite instead of a parachute. Nothing to claim.
