A South Australian man has described in a lightly poetic manner of surviving a two-pronged shark attack while surfing at a joint called D’Estrees Bay at the popular tourist resort Kangaroo Island, which is seventy miles south-west of Adelaide.
The wave, which is called The Sewer, was named so in the nineteen-sixties because locals said the barrel “spits you out like a piece of shit”.
If the names Kangaroo Island and The Sewer ring a bell, it’s cause it’s the same joint a surfer was hit by a Great White five years ago.
“It’s a very popular spot down where these people are surfing,” the mayor told the national broadcaster at the time. “There’s a lot of surf spots right around the island and of course we’ve got heavy concentrations of sea lions and a lot of sharks live in the waters around, particularly the south coast of Kangaroo Island. It’s not surprising, you’re going into their territory so you have to expect anything, quite frankly.”
Shortly before that shark attack, a Great White was photographed swimming under the town’s jetty.
In the latest shark attack, which has been blamed, variously, on the shark chasing a sea lion which used the man as a decoy and, in one case, climate change, a surfer in his fifties was hit by a bronze whaler, a shark rarely involved in fatalities, while sitting on his board.

In a statement to the cops, he described it thus:
“It was like being hit by a truck. It bit me around my back, buttock and elbow and took a chunk out of my board. I got a glimpse of the shark as it let go and disappeared.”
You just have to make friends with the locals. Just pet ’em, they love it.
Then, when any rogue blow ins look twice at you, the locals will pull him up.

DR–out of genuine curiosity, since I know this is a passion point for you and you legitimately want something done about shark #s in Oz—has any Oz based press picked up on any of your BG articles and used your point of view in the press, representing an example of well known surf media for culling sharks/limiting their #s/removing their protections? It seems like any journalist would be able to find all of your articles and mention them.
The lefty journos round here would be too busy rubbing one out in the dunnies after reading the story above this one.

Well, for one, I don’t regard a couple of slashes by a Bronzie to be in the same department as the Great White boom. As for the Whites, I couldn’t give two fucks what’s done about ’em, culled, protected or given divine status. What interests me is how it has, like the war in the Levant, turned into a left-right divide with scant regard given to numbers etc. Why no tears about tigers or bulls gaffed? Why no tears for the two million kangaroos culled each year? The aim of my reporting, if you can call it that, is to make newcomers to the debate understand that something…great…is happening before our eyes. Easy to be a revolutionary or a Great White advocate if you never have to kill or, in our case, visit the ocean.
