Yago Dora hit with bill for tens of thousands of American dollars!
Three weeks back, BeachGrit readers were thrilled I think it’s safe to say, when the doe-eyed Brazilian Yago Dora easily defeated Griffin Colapinto at Cloudbreak to win the world title.
It was the sixth world title for a Brazilian surfer since 2018 and, as I wrote at the time, Yago Dora left Colapinto, a white-skinned Gandhi figure, electric with terror and squirming like a bacha baz naked under his robe.
Yago Dora, who is twenty-nine, received two hundred thousand American dollars for winning, an amount that was rounded down to one hundred and sixty gees after the Fijian tax man came knocking.
Speaking to Brazil’s CNN, Yago Dora revealed he was slugged for forty gees tax on his two hundred. Non-resident athletes, like Yago Dora, are taxed on Fiji-sourced income and the rate is a flat 20% withholding tax on the gross amount, unless a double taxation agreement (DTA) applies. Fiji has DTAs with countries like Australia, but not Brazil, so no relief was given to Yago Dora.
This compares favourably to the US, howevs, which’ll eat up thirty percent of your winnings and Australia which gonna gobble thirty-two percent but Australia does have a reciprocal agreement with Brazil so that tax paid gets credited to your bill back in Brazil.
Of 560k earned in 2025, Yago Dora was skimmed of roughly 150.
Important thoughts: is this what is called, below the line, a non-story, a symptom of a BeachGrit principal seeing the sun shining and three-foot north-swell meandering across a rare non-closing out bank at Bondi and wanting to close the damn computer and do his silly four-finned dance?
Haven’t athletes always been taxed by whatever country they’ve competed in, whether you surf or stroke a ball across nets?
And when it comes to income tax, what are your feelings? Are you happy to work five or six months of the year just to cover the bill, a procedure more oppressive than serfs of yore sending a third of their crops to the King etc?
Also, and importantly, do you believe, whatever country you live in, that your masters are spending your money wisely?

I’ve never really thought about where athletes get taxed. I suppose I would’ve assumed it would be their country of residence, not the temporary location of an event. How curious.

Taxes can be pretty fucked up, at least in the US. Gotta give 30% or more of your income but really have no say in how it’s used. Look at the current shit going on and it’s pretty clear. We are paying $400,000,000 to refurbish a jet that won’t ever be used by a sitting president, yet it will be donated by the DOD to a foundation for use by a single person. If that’s not fucked up and corrupt, I’m not sure what is.
I agree it’s pretty shit….. I decided years ago to justify this by saying that $400,000,000 refurbishment is essentially redistributed taxes turning into income to the private sector owners and employees of the refurbishment business(es), who in turn spend money in the community and keep the whole thing rolling along. 3ft, sunny and offshore baby.
Only * to this is if refurbishment contract is overseas or Trump owned, then its grey, 1ft and howling onshore.
From time to time I have to go and take care of my mom when my dad is out of town. She is in her mid to late 70’s. From the moment she wakes up she goes and flicks on the tele straight to the news on max volume as she eats her cereal and drinks her earl grey tea. You start to see her figiting and getting worked up over the state of world being thrown at her. One day I asked her Why do you even watch this it doesn’t make you happy? Her response.
