For the past ten years, surfers in the American coastal town of San Clemente, best known for being the home of Matt Biolos, Dino Andino and, for a time, Richard Nixon, have thrived to the work of Brazilian two-time world surfing champion Filipe Toledo, who has lived in a commune of sorts in a sprawling Orange County compound.
Toledo, who is thirty, lived in San Clemente with his artist wife Ananda Marçal, children Mahina and Koa and with Daddy Rick and mama Mari in the archetypal Californian house compete with fire pit, large garage and underground swimming pool.
The move was mentioned, briefly, in a story on his personal website, FT.77, alongside a story detailing Toledo’s appearance at the Sao Paulo grand prix and at a subsequent go-kart race.
Although Filipe’s kart experienced mechanical issues midway through the course, the moment was marked by fun, laughter, and good energy among the guests. His participation reinforces Filipe’s charisma and presence in events outside of surfing, bringing him even closer to the Brazilian public.
More importantly,
His return to the country is a gift to fans and Brazilian surfing. With the two-time champion living in Brazil again, it will be possible to see him more frequently at events, actions, and projects related to the sport, further strengthening his connection with the public and sponsors.
Hailed as a small-wave wizard, a king even, Filipe Toledo’s performances, or lack, in dangerous reef waves have long been criticised, particularly at BeachGrit, although his sixteen-hour reign as King of Teahupoo will live long in our memories.
