“Everybody was just in awe. You could see people diving down to get a better look because it was such a special encounter..."
You never know what a day will bring. Yesterday, for example, brought fine offshore winds, throughout San Diego County, and a li’l pulse of peaky swell. A day prior, it brought an alien from the ocean deep who briefly visited self-realized surfers out at Swamis, in Encinitas, before beaching itself at Cardiff, in Cardiff.
The Mola Mola, or ocean sunfish, “looks like the invention of a mad scientist,” according to researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Continuing, the august institution explained, “Huge and flat, this silvery-gray fish has a tiny mouth and big eyes that vanish into an even bigger body with a truncated tail. Topping out around 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), the mola is the world’s heaviest bony fish. (This category doesn’t count sharks and rays; the whale shark is 10 times bigger.)”
No reason given for the exclusion of sharks and rays.
The Mola Mola was, again, first spotted in the lineup at Swamis, a fine right that breaks of the Self-Realization Fellowship, there on the bluff.
The Self-Realization Fellowship, or SRF, was founded in 1920 by Indian guru Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920 with the goal of “scientific techniques for attaining direct personal experience of God.” Yogananda launched the religious organization in Los Angeles but later moved to a hermitage in Encinitas, the very one overlooking Swamis, where he wrote his famous book Autobiography of a Yogi.
SRF had many famous devotees in the 1960s, including The Beatles George Harrison and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley.
There is no information if the surfers, out at Swamis, attempted to proselytize to the Mola Mola but, whatever the case, it made its way down to Cardiff Reef where surfer, photographer and wildlife biologist Brandon Rowley just so happened to be.
“Everybody was just in awe. You could see people diving down to get a better look because it was such a special encounter,” he told the local CBS affiliate. “It’s that giant dorsal fin sticking out of the water, so it makes sense that people might mistake it for a shark. Definitely unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”
Well, the Mola Mola dabbled there, for a moment, before beaching itself, thus ending its life.
The fierce surf enforcer Joel Tudor often surfs Cardiff Reef though, again, there is no information if he pointed the fish in.
More as the story develops, I suppose.
‘No reason given for the exclusion of sharks and rays.’
This calls for some deeper , investigative journalism.

Hahahaahahaha that is the funniest thing I have seen in ages, reminds me of a chick I used to know in high school
Almost give credence to those religious folks who think we’re more important than other animals.
Thanks for the link. Truly bizarre.
Donovan Frankenreiters’ band?
By that do ya mean, “went sideways, got washed ashore, and died rotting and stinky on a beach” ?
Like any true Sunchild.

It’s all too clear we’re on our own….the politicians are throwing stones.
Bob Weir died
I was just posting my favorite song of his
I’m aware which is why I quoted his lyrics from Throwing Stones. Going to boot up some Jack Straw here soon. Wishing for just One More Saturday Night …
Watching The Other One documentary on Netflix right now. Worth watching if you’ve not seen it. Great footage and interviews.
Saw them once before Jerry died, in Vegas at the Silver Bowl. Not that Jerry was doing well health wise then. Fat and on heroin. Bad combo. Okay show, but you could tell Jerry just couldn’t lock in to jams.
I think I went to that show too. Steve Miller Band opened up. Someone got struck by lightning I think the next day during the show. We all woke up laying in the dirt next to the truck out on some dirt road way out in the desert. Improvised “campsite”.
Actually I went to another Dead show in Vegas a couple years later too. Just me and like 12 Mission Beach chicks from SDSU. Guess I forgot about that one. And the fact that the Dead played in Vegas a lot. Maybe we weren’t at the same show after all. Getting a little forgetful in my later years.
YES! The one where some poor bastard got hit by lightning sitting on the metal bench seating up along the rim of the stadium.
Sharks and rays have cartilage, not bones. Therefore different category
Facts ain’t welcome here, friend.
Sorry. I best not tell you all religions are a scam then
God made all sharks and rays have an inferior skeletal structure therefore negating the need to include them within the Boney fish’s superior world. This so angered the great shark Judas and he vowed to extract his revenge by devouring the very beings god had created in his own image
There’s an eight part fictional series in this
I used to write for home and away
I’m waiting for marine biologist Kelly Slater to opine on this wonder of nature.
Do sunfish taste good though?
Yep,especially sunny side up.
Not really. Loaded with parasites.
So good they named it twice !
*with heavy Jersey accent
“Hey Jay, ya know what that is?! Jay!!! That’s a baby fucking whale!!!Jay!!!! Holy shit, that’s a baby fucking whale!!!”
The Mola Mola, the favorite fish of John John.
Sorry, I’ll show myself out now.
Nice eating apparently, though this one looks a bit skinny and sickly, maybe on its last legs.
It was probably seeking out the Yogi, and after some end of life guidance…
Nah, opah or moon fish are really good. Mola mola, not so much
Poor Sunfish, I guess things weren’t looking so bright…
