Wild events unfolding just south of World Surf League Championship Tour stop number 4, the Surf City El Salvador Pro, and just north of stop number 5, the Vivo Rio Pro, after the U.S. swung into Venezuela to snag the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife in order to try them on federal drug and gun charges in New York.
The Trump administration has, of course, been saber rattling off the South American coast for many months, now, building up a robust military presence and targeting boats that are allegedly carrying drugs though a land operation, and the ensuing capture of Venezuela’s leader, is a wild escalation by any standard.
Even though Trump was elected to office, last year, on a campaign to Make America Great Again by avoiding international entanglements, forever wars, nation-building etc., he took to the microphone, after the attack, to declare, “We’re going to run (Venezuela) until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. So we don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in. And we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years. So we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. And it has to be judicious because that’s what we’re all about. We want peace, liberty and justice for the great people of Venezuela, and that includes many from Venezuela that are now living in the United States and want to go back to their country. It’s their homeland.”

Just before Trump’s press conference, CNN interviewed National Security Analyst Beth Sayer, who seemed to endorse the action partly due to Venezuela’s detention of Americans. She cited the case of a surfer who was just over the border in Colombia but snagged my Maduro’s forces and dragged back to Venezuela and refused both a cool buzz and some tasty waves.

U.S. involvement in Central and South American affairs is nothing new. The late 1800s into the middle 1900s saw multiple “Banana Wars,” or various military/CIA endeavors in the region aimed at protecting U.S. business interests. Then, of course, there was the 1950s toppling of Guatemala’s leftist president, the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba that sought to remove Fidel Castro, the fomenting of coups in 1960s Brazil, 1970s meddling in Bolivia and Chile and 1980s interference in the aforementioned El Salvador and Panama.
Overt fiddling south of the border calmed down during the last few decades, Trump, I suppose, realizing the allure of his very own branded forever war once in office.
Though how do you imagine his loyal base will react? First, no promised Jeffery Epstein files, now a real international mess.

So happy, unlike a few of the comments, I would actually trust a source like yours to know some stuff – hung with some ex seals / gov k types back in vb and those guys are plugged into a hive mind for life. And I highly respected them – the actual seals in general (although admittedly not always) are not the stereotypes on tv, gung ho second amendment nuts , they’re often very smart incredibly hardcore top notch Americans.
That said, there has to be something said for the fact that unilateral regime change is generally a very bad idea. And if it’s based in large part on mineral acquisition – which this by any objective view appears to have been – that makes it even worse. I actually don’t think isolationism is a great idea , at least as a blanket policy blind to every circumstance. I generally respect the views of veterans who’ve been in the mix (can’t say that for all of them , the cosplaying at the current dod,, errr dow, is a joke). And this situation, for better or worse , given its cross global ties to Russia and other non friendlies, strikes me as bigger than trump himself or Epstein or any of the other headlines of the moment.

When I heard the news on Beach Grit, I read some of the comments and got a great laugh…then called a couple of people to get their insight. My pops is a former military strategist, and one of my best friends and business partners is a former Seal turned contract operator well connected with the intel community.
This is what I got:
President Trump removed Maduro to prevent escalation. No one on the U.S. military side was injured or killed.
the President also took Maduro because in recent years especially with the U.S. closing the border and taking away land routes, Venezuela has become an SA super highway for narcotics transportation.
The President also wants Venezuelans to be able to have fair elections without the weight of communist government military forces.
My friend told me that activity in SA is getting a bit volatile recently and Maduro’s influence is causing a lot of disruption in the region with communist supporters and cartels on one side and a rise in more conservative ideologies on the other.
Also, since the discovery of oil in Guyana, Maduro has stepped up his government’s hostility towards Guyana, with threats to annex and invade its smaller English-speaking neighbour.
Lastly, Maduro’s connection with Iran, Russia, China and other countries that wish to do harm to the U.S. will deliver a treasure trove of valuable intel. these “drug boats” often transport much more than just drugs, like terrorists and weapons that could harm America.
My buddy told me the intel on increased activity led the U.S. intel and military to determine Maduro had to go….to prevent a larger conflict.
