Newly-crowned hero Lucas Pinheiro Braathen overcame all odds by taking down Swiss favorite Marco Odermatt by 0.58 seconds. Afterward, he declared that he’s “not even able to grasp reality as I stand here right now. I am just trying to get some sort of emotion here and translate it into words, even though it’s absolutely impossible.”

With the Brazilian Storm waning in surfing, those who cheer the green and gold are certainly re-invigorated and happy to turn their eyes away from the ocean waters and toward the snowy peaks, a new era of dominance on the rise.
Swiss, German, Austrian and Norwegian skiers certainly in for a shock when death threats begin flooding DMs in case a Brazilian doesn’t end atop the podium in the very near future. Non-Brazilian surfers, of course, have much experience the rite. But who could forget when Australia’s Ethan Ewing took down Brazil’s Gabriel Medina at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch three years ago.
The aforementioned fans telling him “One day, you will compete here in Brazil and us will remember you. Get ready. I’m saying again, here in Brazil, we will kill you. Saquarema will be your funeral.”
Ewing fought back with love, posting the messages with a heart emoji and “how good are surfing fans” tag.
