Some days the surf is pumping, the vibes are high and the lineup is the only place to be. Other days, though, the onshore winds pick up, the waves degrade and straddling board whilst chop laps against legs and it’s all so dumb. That is when surfers retreat to the beach to find other forms of amusement.
Some like to toss the frisbee or play spike ball. Others like to read and sip from a hidden bottle of rosé. Still others like to dig big holes right there in the sand or, if with pal, bury him or her.
Well, bored surfers in Del Mar will no longer be able to do the latter starting next month after its city council voted unanimously to ban such behavior citing concerns over suffocation, trip-and-fall risks and hampering emergency vehicles.
Signs will be posted and fines dolled out to those who disobey.
Not everyone is thrilled.
Valentina Woody, mother of three, was approached by the local NBC affiliate while she enjoyed some beach time with her children. “I think having holes or digging holes, building structures or whatever, let them use their own creativity,” she brazenly declared, adding, “It is very weird. I feel like I should have the freedom to do what I want on the beach, of course legally, and I think for me as a parent, my kids should be able to have open freedom and range to everything.”

But what is your opinion? Do you like your beaches lawless, dogs off leash, big ol’ holes everywhere, topless gals in cars driving this way and that, like Daytona Beach there in Florida, or are do you enjoy a more ordered situation?
