"I thought those ambulance days would be long over."
Now we’ve all read or seen a wide variety of notable folk embracing surfing and its lifestyle. From award-winning actresses and actors like Lady Gaga and Orlando Bloom to royalty like Prince Harry and Ivanka Trump to sporting greats like Lewis Hamilton, but never in all my days, I’ve never heard about a legendary jockey being counted amongst our class.
You can imagine my shock, then, when learning of Damien Oliver and his near fatal surfing mishap somewhere near Torquay.
Initially, I assumed the munchkin was one of Hamilton’s bros, as the headline of the piece, wherein I learned of the very scary scene, read, “Racing legend Damien Oliver hospitalised after surfing accident.”
Clicking through, though, I learned that Oliver was a jock, and not just any jock but a multiple cup winning champion enshrined in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. There was even a biopic made of his life titled The Cup and starring Stephen Curry.
You can imagine my continued shock when learning Stephen Curry was not only one of the best basketball players to ever live but also an actor so diverse that he could play a diminutive Australian.
As it turns, the name is also shared by an Australian actor.
In any case, and back to the incident at hand, Oliver was out surfing and attempted to duck dive when, according to the Daily Mail, his board shot back his way, nearly decapitating him and sending him off to the hospital, or hozzy in regional slang, for fixing.
“I thought those ambulance days would be long over,” Oliver on social media, adding, “Cheers to the medical team at Torquay Urgent Care Clinic and Torquay ambulance services. Also sending thanks to the Geelong Hospital nurses and ENT surgeons for their amazing care.”
A very luck outcome on something that could have been much worse.
But do you have opinions on horse racing?
What about duck diving?

met some girls in Nimbin with hair everywhere, feet dirty, but clean smiles
served a tea that fucked me up
wind switched and we drove back best we could
There was a vid of a few jockeys on the gangy (many years ago) in pig masks and while 2 had their way with a Lil filly the other was doing a race call of the action…damo would know em.
“Nearly decapitated”
Let me channel my inner Barrelled and say what a fucking stupid and inaccurate term that is when used to describe surfing injuries. Examples please of anyone EVER getting decapitated by a surfboard while surfing? 0/10 clickbait fail.
Such a romantic
Did you shave her? Details please
Can’t quite imaging the physics of duckdiving and “board shot back his way, nearly decapitating him”…
I’m picturing him as inexperienced and maybe holding a longboard (inappropriately) in front of himself as the foam surged in on a crowded weekend beachy.
I had the same ping ponging thoughts as well with all the name duplication and what not Chuck! Cheers for bringing it to our attention.
So how did 10 ball become a pool variant (more 9 ball than 8) and I just learned about it today? Looks fun I will definitely try and sell my buddies on it!
doubling his Olympian qualifying odds
Kelly just announced a new baby coming (girl)
Will she be a redhead like her brother (and one of the neighbours, plus a Prince and a comedian who’re in similar social circles) ?
‘More as the story develops’
pretty much
Are we sure that it was Stephen Curry who played him, and not Brenden Gleeson; as seen in the thumbnail?
Gleeson would have made a great jockey
Speaking of munchkins, goblins and elves…

That’s going to be my new go-to excuse for failing to catch any waves in session.
Particularly with the deck grip I’ve left on from the former owner.
