Yeah, nah. The whole AI doomsday narrative is largely bullshit. These models are still, in their essence, forecasting models (think super fancy autocomplete with many bells and whistles). Using the output of the model as part of the training set (the requirement to produce the exponential amounts of new data needed for exponential learning) will add almost no new information at best and degrade the model quality at worst (by increasing existing biases, etc).
That’s not to say these models aren’t powerful or dangerous. There’s very real harm being done already; from coaching kids into suicide, to deep fake kiddie porn and impersonation scams.
Thing is, it’s a lot easier for the industry to pretend to be worried about future problems instead of addressing existing ones. Plus all the talk keeps the hype train going. AGI, super human intelligence, coding is dead, all white collar workers will be replaced, etc, etc. Anything that makes these models look all powerful justifies the billions and billions of dollars being spent without a clear profit strategy.
