90s coming-of-age television star Rider Strong is using his platform to amplify a message core lords have been trying to push for years. The now-46-year-old burst onto the screen in 1993, playing Shawn Hunter on the sitcom Boy Meets World across from Fred Savage’s younger brother Ben who, if I recall, was the boy meeting the world. The series stretched five years and was reprised for another three, from 2014-2017, as Girl Meets World.
Ten years ago, Strong was honored with the Young Artist Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award, won last year by Melissa Joan Hart and two years ago by Mario Lopez, but will likely be inducted to surfing’s Walk of Fame, soon, after revealing the one thing he’d like to bring back from the 90s.
Namely, shaming sell-out kooks.
“You know what I would love is, I think the whole notion of selling out was like a joke, you know, back then, like, you didn’t want to sell out, and then of course now it’s everyone sells out,” Strong told People Magazine, adding that everyone would get shamed hard for selling out and he wants to bring that bit that.
“Just a little bit of shame,” he continued. “Like, we could bring that back because I realized that the ’90s were too extreme about that, but I also think that now we’re too far in the other direction of just everybody’s a commercial for everything.”
