"By the way, there's no pleasure in the taking of life..."
Surfers, everywhere, are feeling a little lighter, this morning. A touch brighter. Ever since this dreamy Sport of Queens busted onto the pop culture scene, some 80-ish years ago, the masses have branded it “silly,” anyone making a life centered around riding waves a “dropout.” Surfers have been lampooned by the likes of Sean Penn and Nic Cage on the big screen and by Kelly Slater, playing Jimmy Slade, on the small. Surfers have had their favorite clothing labels turned into beard oils and fingernail clippers. Surfers have been told to “get a job” and “cut your hair.” Surfers have been told, disdainfully, that the Beach Boys “play your music.”
Living the “traditional surfer lifestyle,” in a word or three, a shameful thing.
You can understand the happiness flowing today, then, after the very famous actor Kurt Russell refused to apologize for his equally shameful traditional hunting lifestyle, days ago.
Appearing on the Table Manners podcast, the 73-year-old was asked about his love of hunting and if he ever feels sentimental about animals. He responded, “Well, I thank them for their service,” before expounding, “By the way, there’s no pleasure in the taking of life. There’s great pleasure and honor in taking an animal that feeds you. And I respect that and honor that. And it means a big deal to me. And you know, I make no apologies.”
His son, Wyatt, appearing alongside him continued to explain, “One of the things that we’ve really forgot, especially my children growing up – you see those things run through your backyard, and you see all kinds of animals, and they’re majestic. But then you go to the grocery store, and it’s like 90% of the people are just in a pack. They don’t know. They have no connection to food at all. And so it’s very nice. You know, we were raised with it to know that thing that you took is gonna be your dinner meal.”
Kurt ended by saying, “It’s not something I push on anybody I mean, it’s not for everybody, but I like bringing down my own meat. I grew up in that family.”
Surfers, everywhere, looking at their children with a twinkle of pride in self for the first time in a long time or maybe ever.

The wet markets in Shanghai offer some great live produce. Maybe a bit suss.
More shark hunting would be good
Kauai is getting hammered, wow
Big storm ?
Just watched a new edit with Maui surfer, Matt Meola. Seems like a really solid fella. A good film despite his second-tier rail game.
Historic storm
A travel buddy flew into it on Monday
!!! 50-60mph w/80mph gusts in Waikiki. Torrential rains. Mass flooding.
In the words of Ned Ryerson: “Watch out for that first step….it’s a doozy”
BG rabbit hole goes deep. Much entertainment.

digging for some 10 year anniversary retrospective???
Just following the various hyperlinks down the hole.
Saw a picture of my dad and grandfather eating a cooked moose heart after a hunt in a cabin in Montana when I was a kid. Played with animal traps at my grandparents house in the upper Midwest and looked all the Swedish hunting rifles we had in our closet at home.
Asked my dad to take me shooting when I was twelve. Got bored with it after a half hour. Don’t understand the attraction to it.
This might interest you if destroying objects is entertaining

That Otto when he was younger…?
We need Otto to confirm but I don’t think he can fake the eastern Euro or Russian accent.
He fakes that he cares about the Constitution on here all the time, so why not an Eastern accent, too?
LOL! I patiently await his response!
Yea I guess if things exploded when you hit them it would be fun.
I need only acai bowls and slaps to sustain me.
That you M-Rod?
Fifth grade. Some of the boys in my class were going out of town for a basketball tournament. They were excited and talked about swimming in the indoor pool, playing tag in the halls and… they were gonna go on a cunt hunt. I’d heard of deer hunting and duck hunting, but not cunt hunting. Fast forward to that evening. ‘Hey Dad, what’s cunt hunting?’
He got a good laugh out of it, explained what it meant, and never ever say that to a woman if I valued my life.
I ran over a rabbit on the 395 earlier this morning. didn’t mean to. Does that count ?
Did you harvest it?
there are still bits of it stuck to my driver side front tire. maybe enough for a nice snack and already seasoned with asphalt
I’m very sad you didn’t grab the animal, harvest the meat and save the pelt to make a collar for your best Outerknown hoodie for your next visit to The Quiet Woman
I wasn’t sure whether I’d even pancaked the little guy until I stopped for gas at Coso Junction and saw the carnage. But you’re not wrong about The Quiet Woman having some real Cruella de Vil types haunting the joint
Surely you’re not headed to Mammoth with rabbit guts on your car?
The asphalt microplastics will offer a nice terroir.
harvest?
Good album. Also Harvest Moon.
Fun Hippy Fact
I cry when I hear Neil begin that song. You won’t see it, I don’t know why and it happens every time.
I arrived one year and a billboard near Manukau announced that Neil was playing at the arena in town. I was headed north to Matakana and my buddies house, but figured it was destiny seeing that sign.
It was also eerily close to the start time. Neil came out alone with an acoustic guitar and it was fucking magic.
Intermission and I tried to call to warn my buddy that I’d be late, more his wife who worries about night falling. No answer so fuck it, back to my seat.
Crazy Horse begins their set and it was so fucking shitty I was in the parking lot and on the highway as fast as I could walk
Crazy how certain songs do that. I guess it’s not that crazy. There’s decades of feelings and a life lived attached to a couple of simple chords.
I got a few songs that I play from time to time just to make me have a sook. Went a decade without a tear, that’s fucking unhealthy.
The first few bars and I become solemn.
I bring down my own meat, too. Lotion helps.
saw some roca bruja footage from last couple days that looked all right, you still down there?
I wish. Was there just last week. Body wrecked. Played hoops just now–took a while to get my legs moving. Heading back in June, this time with students. I surfed more last week than the last year combined at my homebreak. Southeast USA sucks for waves. Life definitely incomplete without that feeling of seeing a 10 foot wall feathering on the outside and barely paddling over the lip of it as it’s pitching. I think of all my non-surfing friends and family and how they’d not know what the fuck to do in that situation, and I live for it, but rarely ever get to experience it. Only a surfer knows the feeling…
after time on the east coast that pacific juice definitely hits different.
On a CR trip a while back we had a FL buddy w/ us and it was his first time there. Right before first paddle out I told him, ‘don’t ditch in front of a big set, lips aren’t as friendly as FL.’
He was paddling out right in front of me, first set came through, he ditched, came up with his brand new Natural Art in two pieces, like it was cut with a laser. He hadn’t even ridden the first wave on it.
Felt bad, then again, he was warned, ha
Never ditch, he got what he deserved
Hiding in a blind, waiting for an unsuspecting animal while aiming is hardly sport and sausage is no reason to kill
But this subject has been beaten to death
Kirk in Tombstone, Tombstone in general, was the greatest dialogue a western has ever been written. Kilmer killed it.
I like the vibe of Heat better–apples to oranges, I know, but I think more apples to apples in many ways. Kilmer understated but central to Heat, too. And sorry, but there’s no better dialogue than North Shore.
We will argue about this to our deaths!
Kilmer was classic in Real Genius.
“You must be Johnny Ringo”
“Look at it this way. Considering the type of people you are and the environment you’re in, you have to admit the strong possibility this may be the only chance you ever have in your entire lives…to have sex.”
“You were just too high strung”
“What are you going to do boy, stand there and bleed?”
“No darling, I’m sure of it, I hate him”
“Doc, I didn’t know use were in town?”
“Do you mind if I name my first child after you? ‘Dipshit Knight’ has a nice ring to it.”
So you are anti-hunting? Anti-fishing? Strict vegetarian?
I am a carnivore who likes vegetables
Buy my meat at the store, prefer Choice to Prime often
Smoking ribs today, come by
On my way.
Won’t be done till 5 ish
Only corner I could find was hobbos, otherwise conditions are dreamy
Good period with 180 or so on the direction but tide bottoms out around 2:00, beach breaks already struggling.
The good sand is shadowed though the river looked pick and choose able. Too bad every pro in the county knows the same thing.
Almost went out at Greek Peak. Drove back to top of Pitas and I missed the tide. Wasn’t doing the wedge thing either, just small lefts running while Emma adjacent was sizable walls.
“…a carnivore who likes vegetables “
Not to be a grammar nazi or pedantic (like Barrelled), but the term you want is omnivore.
So important to always let everyone know your disdain for me. Rent-free.
For the record, I have no disdain for you whatsoever, amigo. At times, however, your pedantry/pugnacity is tiresome. Consider this or dismiss as you choose.
Thanks, I both considered and dismissed simultaneously.
I buy meat from the grocery store too but with modern meat farming I don’t think we’re in a spot to criticize the guy who kills a deer from a blind to get some venison steaks etc.
It’s the hiding aspect that seems very pussy to me. You have every advantage including your prey doesn’t know you are there. That’s a shooting gallery not hunting.
At least you sweat fishing.
Tombstone had some great dialog, certainly, but there are also epic lines in Lonesome Dove and a number of Clint Eastwood movies.
You have a point, but I think the Unforgiven wins as far as dialogue.
Now Kirk in Escape From New York?
Classic.
More bowhunters use tree stands for white tail than firearm hunters. Some regions in this country are densely forrested, being above line of sight and mitigating your stench, is often best strategy. Then if course that deer has to be antlered, unless it’s rare both sex days.
In Montana, in the back country, it would make no sense to sit in a stand. Glass from distance and stalk.
there is an aspect that resonates….. hiking in somewhere, on the search, you find or you don’t. I get that.
guys round here pay ranchers for tags for buffalo and pigs. shooting galleries
Then they come home with sausage or ground bison.
“Where’s the prime rib”?
I think the guys butchering keep the porterhouse, rib roast, etc for themselves.
Here’s a tip Otto
Horn and Cantle, Big Sky
Top 3 filet in my life, local bison. Soft as butter.
That’s not altogether true. There might be a couple spots like that but you can hunt free ranging game in California, just maybe not in Carp.
buddy went to Montana to “bag” the bison and Texas, where the farmer released the pigs to be shot.
dude has so much sausage. first Q we did was fun, but I’m over it after just 3 in one week. told him to give some to the poor, but MAGA ain’t xtian enough to share
