The iconic competition has run a record 63 times, wrapping its latest iteration, yesterday, with Brazil’s Miggy Pupo defeating countryman Yago Dora in the final frame.
Migs took down California’s Griffin Colapinto in the semifinals and Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya in the quarters along his way. Dora, for his part, mowed through the flashy Brazilian Gabriel Medina and Miggy’s brother Samwise along his.
And there, in hard cold black and white is what Australians are trying to accept.
For the first time in history, one of their own mans failed to make it to the final day.
62 years of Southern Crosses flown high. 62 years of Oi Oi Oi. 62 years of Waltzing Matilda done.
A crushing blow.
As mentioned, some who call the Lucky Country home are blaming their neighbors for failing to produce good enough surfing stock. Others blaming the government for not nationalizing surf training. Still others blaming the World Surf League, itself, for facilitating a national embarrassment.

If we’re talking pointless venues of competition over the decades – like a wave pool or most of the U.S., than sure I agree with your sentiments… but when it comes to the history of the Bells contest and its various official names over the years and the Australian contingent, it is different… right?

All I’m saying is when it comes to the Bells event, in my seppo opinion, watching the ‘CT since the days of the ASP, it’s the one event/venue that has such an obvious Australian, national pride… you don’t see it American mainland venues… possibly Brazil and Hawaii (to a lesser degree)… but there is nothing like Bells for this annual event…
Strayan beachside towns like I live and grew up in were for generations filled with rough and ready tradies, fishos and so on who fucking ripped cuz their releases in life were surfing and drinking piss. Like Brutus and others have said lineups were regulated and punch ons were common. As a young Wog cunt I had to learn to throw a couple at a very young age and get good at surfing very quickly if I wanted to get any decent waves.
Not big, not clever but this tough environment bred surfers and competitors who would fucking charge and not back down to any cunt. Sooooo many examples of this but Bugs is the perfect one. Loud, brash went to Hawaii claimed we are tops now, got his arse pounded but kept going. This led to a close bond between Strayans and Hawaiians which is perfectly illustrated by our very own Brutus. I personally made a heaps close friendships with a few Hawaiians that enabled me to chase good swells over in Fiji and I am forever thankful. On a funny side note Dooma is considered a pussy by some cuz he didn’t love heavy waves but still stood up to Jonny Boy and gave more than he got when they punched on at the dunnies at Pipe!! Joel and Mick are both from very average backgrounds but used that as a drive to win world titles and fucking good on em. They were the last of the great Strayan surf animals that this great country have produced and were once famous for
Now we move on to these “sad” times of the last 15 years since Straya had a world champ. Since the birth of the inter web and city dwelling soft cocks were able to move away from their “offices” my hometown has grown massively and now has “new Suburbs” attached. These cunts have moved up here, bought beachfront property, although they never go to the beach, and forced heaps of good local surfing families to move away due to the price increases. They drive around in brand new top of the range Land Cruisers that have never spent a second off road and complain why are our quaint little town doesn’t have an Ethiopian restaurant among many other other fuckwit remarks
Most good Strayan groms these days have ZERO interest in the Weird Seppo League despite how all inclusive it is and still rip but realise all the odds are stacked against them. Strayans are street smart so most of the cunts just concentrate on getting a trade or doing whatever it takes to keep living around here. Genuine question, do yous reckon the typical classic Strayan grom who is still pretty much the same as previous generations he is proud of has ANY interest in this current version of the tour hahahahaha. Groms around here idolise proper surfing and surfers like Ethan, LOB, Mick and Joel and have ZERO interest in going to a point break and doing a single jump for a big score.
So yeh thats my take on why Straya isn’t producing world champs. All well and good except in 2024 the quarters were held on March 29 and semis & final on April 2nd.
In 2017 the quarters and semis were on 18 April but the final was on 19 April.

I think the answer could lie in the young Aussie guys hiring middle aged Aussie coaches who used to be on tour, mostly ranked somewhere between 11 and 26 and made an art form of successfully scraping to re-qualify for the tour on a yearly basis.
…which is extremely admirable in itself; the scraping. Not being good enough to hang with the top 16 in the world but still deciding that you’ll make a profession out of your passion, come hell or high water, no matter how much grinding it takes.
Nuff respect to all the fighters who get knocked off and go into the trenches to requalify again. Those people definitely have something to teach other people.

what could be more unbelievable, is that watching all the Pro’s arrive with big quivers of boards …new….a couple of days before the event starts , to work out what board is best……7 mths to prepare a magic quiver of boards for the CT tour….I mean Jack waxed up a new board on the beach before his heat…oops no screws…..numerous other pros same deal ..mostly the younger ones….when ya watch the Brazzos…older boards….contest board already sorted with Backups….a sign of the times…shows how unprofessional, pro surfers/shapers are…
a lot of the time the coaches are just giving info on , how the judges are scoring on what waves and which waves should be surfed or not…plus they are mates also

Adriano is a great example , he worked hard , had coaches that helped him develop his repotoire….and was a ferocious competitor…won a world title and was not the best surfer …so combine his tenacity with prodigy ability….and we have a group of surfers who are just better prepared!

Most of Australia’s greatest surfers came from ordinary working class families. They were neither rich nor poor. My Mum worked with Occy’s mum. Food on the table, house near the water at Kurnell. Definitely no struggle street.
Same could be said for Carroll. Parkinson. Fanning wasn’t stealing food to survive and he certainly didn’t learn on a cast off Esky lid. MR, Dane Reynolds. Machado. Irons.
None of them were cashing cheques as juniors to keep the lights on.
I think the common thread between champions is access to endless water time, proximity to the ocean, lack of distraction and freedom to fall in love with surfing to the point it becomes obsession.
As surfers we all talk a big game about our commitment, passion and dedication but these crew are next level.
Love + Time + Access + focus = Success.
I assume it was more the blissful dole years that created a surge of talent that washed through to the following generation. This talent overload perhaps lost a bit of momentum with the distractive advent of social media vying with surfing for mental energy. If you’re not thinking, dreaming and visualising surfing then the water time is less effective to a degree. I also think that the demise of the long play surf movie on a durable medium, such as video or DVD, went towards the end of repetitious viewing of the same waves surfed so that technique can be memorised. Repetitive study of the same turns surely imparts more effective learning than being saturated with varying content? Focus, as opposed to distraction.

Anyway I’m not panicking. Australia is a surfing powerhouse. Still a third of the men’s CT tour and current women’s world champ. Could be worse!

having lived on tour for 35 years during the great Australian mongrel period and domination….then the Kelly/Momentum period…..watching the Brazzos come on tour was like a flashback to another era…they were so hungry/travelled as a team…and out of this came the Brazilian Storm which is still blowing quite nicely…Australian Pros, have their entourages of coaches/support crew…and seem to run Solo…….Brazzos hang together/surf together and travel together….
